    2. Joe Matlock
    3. Janet Sorry to here about your mother...Here is what I had on Lucy and Zachariah...Luke's family both father and son continue to be a riddle. I hope somebody has a key. We are either missing a husband for Jemma or one does not exist. I have not found any missing sons or brothers yet. That there is one is beyond doubt. Or did he die young and there is no husband for her. Would not be the first time. Joe Matlock Descendants of Zachariah Matlock Generation No. 1 1. Brenda > Hello Wanda and All, Assuming her designation as "aunt" to Luke Jr. (head of the household?), in the 1880 census is correct, I believe there are only two choices for Jemma Matlock: (a) she was an unmarried, much younger, sister of Luke Sr., with illegitimate children or who is guardian of another Matlock's offspring; or (b) more likely she was married to one of Luke Sr.,'s little brothers, perhaps the ones unaccounted for Wanda's census analysis. I have pondered these at length also, as through my Choate/Bird Dade Co. families, I am cousins multiple times to Choates/Birds/Simpsons/Sooters, etc. Footnote: I am sorry to tell you that your Matlock and/or Choate cousin, my mother Marjorie Lee Sexton Baugh passed away peacefully in Salt Lake City, UT on June 16 at age 87. She was unable to recover from two successive, relatively minor surgeries. She had been living in an Assisted Living facility (dementia/Alzheimer's) in Sandy, UT, but had made a few, extremely good trips back to her house in Long Beach, CA where I have been holding down the fort. Her MATLOCK ancestry is as follows: Marjorie Sexton Baugh, daughter of Charles Cebrin Sexton & Lucy Isabelle Marsh (both d. Dade Co. Mo, b. Shiloh), Lucy Marsh, d/o William M. Marsh & Casselia Bird (both buried Dade Co. Mo, Pennsboro & Shiloh). Casselia Bird, c/o Henry Bird & Lucinda Choate (both buried Kings Point Cemetery, Dade Co.). Lucinda Choate, d/o Powhatan Choate & Winnie Haley (both buried Bowles Cemetery, Dade Co) Winnie Haley, d/o William Haley & Lucy Stone (Wm Haley buried Obediah Bounds Cemetery, Robertson Co. Mo., Lucy Stone buried Hopewell Cemetery in Medina, Gibson Co. TN - ). William Haley, s/o Silas Haley & Keziah Medlock (both presumed born around Louisa Co. VA, buried in Richmond Co. NC), Keziah Medlock, d/o Charles Medlock & Agatha. (Charles d. 1797 Warren Co. GA), Footnote on Charles & Keziah. During the time of the Regulators in NC, Charles was a sheriff of Anson Co., and wrote a number of letters to the NC authorities asking for $$ and help as he had too many troublesom Regulator prisoners for his resources. Keziah's husband Silas was a signatory of Regulator documents. Too bad we don't know when they married. Charles Medlock, s/o George Medlock & Hannah (George d. 1800 Louisa Co. VA ?? or is this wrong Mary Jean? Have I got the brother here) George Medlock s/o John Medlock/Matlock of New Kent Co. VA Her CHOATE ancestry is as follows beginning with Powhatan above. Powhatan Choate was the son of Gabriel Choate, d. 1845, Robertson Co. TN, and Lucy Webb (both presumed buried in Robertson Co. TN); Gabriel Choate was the son Edward Choate, Jr. d. ca 1830 Robertson Co. TN, and unknown (maybe Nancy). (I believe he was a widower when he moved from Franklin Co. VA to Robertson Co. ca 1806. He married Sarah (House) Axum in 1813 or so in Davidson Co. (maybe Sumner. marriage of record). NOTE: This Edward Choate is the father of Charity Medlock, who appears in the 1850 Dade Co. Mo, and her husband is presumed to be Benjamin , I believe probably son of Luke who is 94 in the 1860 Barry Co. census -- neighbor to Dade -- see additional 1850 Dade census info re Sooter & Simpson below. I am sorry but I see RED every time that she is said to the wife of Luke Matlock, who is of an earlier generation, and for whom there is no proof that his wife was even named Charity). Edward Choate, Jr. is generally accepted as the son of Edward Choate Sr., d. about 1815 in Robertson Co. TN, and his wife Elizabeth. Edward Choate, Jr. has been given many sets of parents among the early Choates in what is now Franklin Co. Va. , but clearly goes back to Christopher Choate of Baltimore/Anne Arundel Co. Footnote: My 3g paternal grandfather, Lipscomb Wash, b. Louisa Co., was sister to Lucy Wash (d/o Thomas d. 1781 Louisa Co.) who married one of the Zachariah Matlocks. Joe told me which once, but I forgot which one. Speaking of which, I would like it if Joe or anyone has done any research on the descendants of these Matlocks as they are my cousins on my father's side. With my best regards, Janet (Baugh) Hunter 1850 Dade Co. Census Info: From transcription here: *CHOAT - C300 DATE: 24 Oct 1850 Gabriel Choate is brother of Powhatan Choate. He moved to Yell County Arkansas*Powhatan may just have moved in where he was, waiting until his wife's inheritance via her father came from NC (Silas Haley's land sale in Richmond Co.) Her father died ca 1843/4. His will specifies that his daughters husbands, them that married Choat and Miles, see that the money due him from NC be used for moving to Missouri (and only for that) PAGE: 303R & 304L DWELL#: 595 FAM#: 606 1. TN, had two daughters who married Simmons (not identified by me yet). When Powhatan Choate came to Dade Co. Mo around 1853, I believe he came with some of these Simmons cousins. Who also moved into the neighborhood with their gang of cousins, with aunt Charity Matlock the matriarch. The Brewers, the Choates and the Simmons came directly from Robertson/Davidson Co. area I believe. The Matlocks, Sooters and Birds came from Carroll Co. TN. William R. Sooter is in the 1850 Carroll Co. Census I have just a few excerpts from Carroll Co. Court Records which I have inserted below. Note: Benjamin Medlocke with Sooters, Birds, Stones. The Stones and Covingtons were also from Richmond Co. NC, via Robertson Co. TN, cousins of Lucy Stone Haley, mother of Winney Haley, wife of Powhatan Choate, etc., etc. Page 186 June 9th 1828, Carroll County minute book page 186: The Jurors appointed at the last term of this court to mark and view a road from Hugh Hills to the Henry County line this day made the following report, we the undersigned met at Esp..
