Jana Just got back to the office and found your message below. I remembered when Carolyn ask me about Richard that I had sent you Dr. Matlock's work and wondered if you had time to go thorough it. I will read through this again tomorrow and comment further. But hurriedly, the chart I sent you earlier was all that Dr. Matlock had published the differences are bits and pieces that I have found along the way. I have found a few other reverences at the LDS site that confirm the existence of some of the early people but not the family group as listed in the Dr.'s book. While I have been able to confirm some of The Dr.'s family as being listed correctly, mostly those in his living memory or one generation removed the earlier generations have not yet turned up. However I have little on the Matlock and Thomas families you have listed below either. If the thrill is in the hunt then we must be the most thrilled family around, cause we are always hunting... and finding. Your finding of Two women of the same name marring into the family would explain the confusion and I look forward to going back over you notes for new information. You are quite right in encouraging people to contribute to the list. Sometimes the most seemly unimportant byte or bite of information can string together large runs of family material. I see no more here... what you have below seems to offer more (??). First I note that the marriage date he shows for Richard and Mary is obviously wrong, as we know from the pension application info. Just trying to get onto "the same page" to begin with - I am always willing to have you let me know where I am leading myself astray! I *can* help straighten out one sometimes confusing detail right off the bat and I have an idea regarding something else that Joe's "Dr. JWL" research quoted below seems to be substantiating! ... a George Matlock did marry an Elizabeth Betsey Weddel but so did a William Robert Matlock marry *another* Elizabeth Betsy Weddell/Weddle. Since both lived in the same area (Jackson Co., IN) and were related to each other, it is easy to get them confused... I have all the documentation on both and know that at least they show up correctly on my charts! See the 7th chart down on my page; you can click on George and Betsy to see their line of descent as far as I have it... I have basically come to the conclusion that the necessary resources to sort this out aren't in the customary libraries and until I (or someone else) can get to either Indiana, Tennessee or North Carolina and can go to the existing source data, it will remain a mystery. UNLESS, as Joe mentions, some wonderful researcher NEW to all of us got a computer for Christmas and is lurking in the shadows waiting to see if they want to help "us dummies" get it straight! On this list, the intent is to get it right for future generations! We know the MATLOCKS were notorious for being some what crummy record keepers and we are all doing the best we can! I think a big CLUE to untangling this line this would be to locate the whereabouts of that Bible that was in the hands of his brother-in-law, Notley Thomas that Richard refers to in the pension application... I'd also like to learn *who* the sister is that was married to Notley...I have tried, but with no luck so far... Elizabeth Mueting's research on the Weddle family includes LOTS on Matlock and has been the basis of some of my charts - I have copies of all this from the library resources in SLC. I agree from what I found that Sarah was one daughter of Richard and Mary. Census record "slash" marks indicate two other females in 1790, Burke County, NC. If what you show is correct, Joe, we now have the names of those other girls! This is potentially very exciting! Can you tell me how you derived the names? There must be a Bible floating around somewhere.... If it is correct, I'd like to add the names to my charts giving Joe credit but referencing Dr. JWL and add an email link to Joe that is OK with you... other ideas??? Something that has puzzled me, was the true identity of Johnson Matlock and Dorothy Matlock who married each other after Johnson lost his first wife (who was perhaps named Polly). My research, and what you show, Joe, lists Johnson as born 1799-1800. At that time, Richard was still married to his FIRST wife - it is well documented that he and Mary Weddle married in 1804 - so Johnson and Dorothy would be half siblings, right? Jackson County, IN documents mention they were related, but not *how* they were related. Can anyone shed light??? I also think we should heed Dr. JWL Matlock's "Preface": "Compiling a family history is a hazardous and uncertain undertaking. Nothing is absolutely certain in genealogy. The information here-in comes form many different sources, from so many people, over so many years. Often information from one person may contradict information from another, and the poor compiler has to figure and refigure, try to make some sense out of it, and settle what seems logical to him. Quite possibly there are errors in this document, and future corrections certainly shall be made. And there are many instances where no information is available at this time. If anyone can supply data that will fill in the many gaps of descent, such knowledge will be more than welcome. I would like for this history to be as full and complete as humanly possible. I invite your contribution, if it will add to what we already know about the Matlock family. A family history is made up of facts, fantasy, and legend. Because of this, the information in this document cannot be certified as absolutely accurate. Take it as it is. It's still a good story." Sounds like he was about on the same page as the rest of us ;) Here is what I have further that led me to the conclusions you see on my charts - which agree with Carolyn mostly: 1) Brenda Avila found in a book called "Tennessee Cousins" pertinent to Richard: 1808 Tax List data - "RICHARD MATLOCK, a revolutionary soldier, was born in HAWKINS COUNTY was evidently brother of JASON and JOHN MATLOCK. RICHARD MATLOCK was born in GRANVILLE COUNTY North Carolina in 1761, and afterwards lived in BURKE COUNTY in the same State." (you figure it out...) 2) Melba Woods and Edgar Matlock are the sources for a lot of my info... Melba and Jess Armstrong researched in cahoots. Edgar was in AR. I have a copy of a letter to my cousin Gene from Melba in which she offers the genealogy you see on my charts and Edgar concurred... both are gone now. Here is part of a 7-15-87 letter from her: " I feel pretty sure your William is another son of Richard Matlock (born 1761, Granville Co., NC). Richard, he lived with 1st wife in SC and then was in Hawkins Co., E. TN when he married 2nd 1805 Mary Weddle. He had 14 children between two wives. I believe his parents were Nicholas Matlock and Mary Shelton who moved from Hanover Co., VA about 1750 to Halifax Co., VA 1755 to Granville, NC and during Revolutionary War went afterward to Burke Co., NC. I suspect Nicholas is a brother to my 5 g grandfather Moore Matlock. He and sons and nephews I believe to be the East TN Pioneer Matlocks. Richard died 1838 Hawkins Co., TN (Rev. War Pension). Part of his family were in Hancock Co., TN and most of his family emigrated to Jackson Co., Indiana. It is said there were twins in this family for seven generations. Descendants still live in Jackson Co., IN as far as I know." She concludes her letter noting that she has been researching the family since 1958... awesome! 3) Jess Armstrong links Richard to Nicholas in the Encyclopedia here: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~szmatlok/n.htm 4) From Colonial and State Records of North Carolina; March 24, 1769; Vol. 22, p.487-488): "Received pay from Co. Robert Harris Granville Regiment of Militia, Granville Co., NC for service protecting public peace at Hillsborough, North Carolina in September 1768. John Matlock, Samuel Matlock, Nicholas Matlock, Henry Matlock." 5) I have a copy of an Affidavit written by David Matlock b. 1811 stating he knows William Robert Matlock "well" in 1895, linking the two as related. David is often suggested to be either William Robert's uncle who brought the younger children of William, son of Richard to IN after William's untimely death or William's elder brother. Establishing who this David is would be a key to whether my ancestry links to Richard... David lived in Van Buren Iowa when he signed the affidavit and it was also signed by Lucy Blair of Colorado Springs, CO., age 45. She may be a sister... 6) Richard Matlock's remains were taken to Mitchell Cemetery in Jackson Co., IN which overlooked the farm of his grandson William M. Matlock (Johnson's son), who donated the land for the cemetery, according to Gene D. Matlock, a William Robert Matlock descendant through WR's son James Ransom Matlock. Gene also suggests that this line had Afro-American blood and went to Indiana knowing it was a free state where they would be safe. 7) Encyclopedia of Matlock's says the following: "JOHNSON, Probably a son of Richard, Rev. Soldier. Johnson does not show in Hawkins Co., Tn. in 1830 as does Richard, Charles and Loving. He does show in Hawkins in 1840. According to an historical sketch on his son, William M. from "History of Bartholomew and Jackson Counties, Ind.", Wm. M. was born in Hancock Co. Tn. Johnson and Dorothy, both of whom were born in S. C. whence they removed to Tennessee where he (Johnson) followed his trade of sleighmaking and also engaged in agricultural pursuits, his death occurring there in 1849. His widow long survived him, having come to Indiana in the 1880's and having here died in April 1897. This worthy couple became the parents of 12 children. The subject of this sketch (Wm. M.) having been the 7th in order of birth." Gene D. Matlock suggests that Charles and Loving are children of Richard's by his first wife. He further suggests that Charles may be William Robert's father - further research needed.... 8) Elizabeth Meuting's record of the descendants of John Weddle states: "Mary Weddle, first daughter and sixth child of our immigrant ancestors, John and Mary Weddle, was born Feb. 9, 1780 in Baltimore, Maryland, died post 1861 in Jackson County, Ind. Married Richard Matlock, son of James Matlock, on May 10, 1804 in Hawkins Co., Tenn. He was born in Apr 1761 in Granville Co., N.C. and died Nov. 4, 1847 in Burke County, N.C., buried in Mitchell Cemetery in Jackson County, Ind. Richard served in the Revolutionary War from April 1, 1779 to July 1, 1781. served under Cpt. Montgomery, and Joseph McDowell, and other companies. Pension allowed Oct. 4, 1832 in Hawkins County, Tenn. Mary's pension was dated Apr 24, 1854 in Jackson County, Ind. Records state they had 13 children, but we can only find traces of these four: 1) Johnson Matlock - born between 1800-1810. Married Polly?? She was born during the same period. They had 5 boys (no other information) 2) William Matlock - born 1810 in Hawkins County, Tenn. Married Elizabeth ?? (no other information) 3) Daniel Matlock - born 1812 In Hawkins County, Tenn., died 1860 in Jackson County, Ind. Married Hannah ?? She was born in 1822 in N.C. Their children: a) Louisa b. 1841 Tenn. b) Sallie b. 1843 Tenn. c) James b. 1847 Tenn. d) George b. ca. 1840, married Polly ?? they had one daughter. He died Oct. 10, 1930 (NOTE: makes me wonder if the two George's are mixed up) Mary Matlock b. 1851 Tenn 4) George Matlock - born 1818, married Polly??" 9) I have just contacted the widow of J. Hoyle Mayfield who has a website with LOTS of familiar names, unfortunately, he passed on last fall and his widow is not real familiar with his sources. PLEASE DO NOT contact her for now as she is in the midst of estate settling, etc. with small children involved and has said she will get back to us about connecting Hoyle's data to ours ASAP...
