I just returned to the office today and have had time to read the below only once and I will comment more later except to say now that the Melungeons are one of the great mysteries of East Tennessee. They are of mixed race but of what races is the question. They clam to be of mixed Indian and Portuguese. I have also seem some claim of Hebrew. Whatever the source their dark skin in a Scots-Irish neighborhood did not make early life easer. I have seen one other reference to another in the family marring one. The more looking around I do the more I find cousins of other racial backgrounds especially Native American and almost exclusively Cherokee. I read it that Richard and Mary still had two teen boys at home; Charles, is 40/50, placing his birth betw. 1780 and 1790 and Loviny (aka Loving - male or female?) b. between 1800-1810. In researching the East Tenn. pages, I continue to see references to Melungeons (of a mix of races) as being endemic to the area and recall that I have heard over and over that MATLOCK is a racially "inclusive" surname. I am beginning to wonder if our research has been tough as a result of things some didn't want disclosed. Personally, I figure I have such a mixed up batch of blood anyhow that nothing would shock or surprise me, but would rather intrigue me, so I am going to continue digging - fair warning! ;) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here is the WILL of Nottley Thomas - mentioned in Richard's Pension Application (no help for us... who was his first wife??? And First, I direct that my body be decently buried at the grave yard where my first wife is buried, on my own plantation, in said County in a manner suitable to my condition in life, and as to my worldly Estate as it hath pleased God to intrust me with. I dispose of the same as follows: First. I direct that all my debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon after my decease as possible, out of any money that I may die possessed of or may first come into the hands of my Executors from any portion of my Estate, real or personal. Secondly. I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Temperance and to my daughter Mary Thomas the plantation that I now live upon. Also, one sorrel mare, also my flock of sheep, also my stock of hogs. Here is what I am finding: David Matlock Obit 1811-1898 David Matlock, aged 87 years, died Sunday evening at his home near Bonaparte. He was born in Tennessee in 1811; was married in 1832 to Nancy Brown. They had eight children, six of which with the mother have died. He was again married, in 1876, to Mary Ward. Nine children one of which is dead, was the result of the last union. The funeral services took place from Ward school-house, Tuesday, Oct. 11, 1898, conducted by Rev. J. B. Eyestone, and burial occurred at the Thompson cemetery. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ also listed as related to MATLOCK - Noah E. Ward ~ 21 Dec 1873 - 30 Jan 1946 Obit NOAH E. WARD ------------ Noah E. Ward was born Dec. 21, 1873, and departed this life Jan. 30, 1946, at the age of 72 years, 1 month and 9 days. On Jan. 26, 1901, he was united in marriage with Amy Finette McCracken. To this union were born three daughters and three sons, one of whom died in infancy. During his long and full life, which terminated after an illness of many months, Noah was always happiest when surrounded by his family, friends and neighbors, and especially happy when spared to celebrate his 45th wedding anniversary with his beloved wife just four days before being called to his reward. With the exception of six years in Oklahoma, he spent his entire life as a farmer in Van Buren county. He incurred the friendship of all with whom he met and always stood ready and willing to aid friends or neighbors. As a young man he confessed his faith in Christ, and united with the Harrisburg Baptist church, later transferred to the Bonaparte Baptist church, where he maintained a membership until death. He leaves to mourn their loss, his wife, sons, James R., and Alvin G.; daughters, Mrs. Mary Willits, Mrs. Tina Ewing, and Mrs. Hazel McIntosh. Also 13 grandchildren, three half brothers, John Matlock of Moline, Ill., Charles Matlock of Keokuk, and Steve Matlock of Bonaparte, and four half sisters, Mrs. Anna Burnett and Mrs. Tina Hornbaker, of Burlington, and Mrs. Dorothy Richards of Tacoma, Wash., and Mrs. Nettie Holmes of Moline, Ill. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 1, at 2:00 at Story Chapel, the pastor, the Rev. John S. F.[can't read].
