Curt again I am in you debt. This may help to explain some the families in Virginia and Tennessee for whom I could not find a starting place... Joe Matlock >>> <curtw@comcast.net> 3/10/2004 3:30:58 PM >>> I recently posted a message in which I said some New Jersey Matlacks owned plantations in Virginia. My memory failed me. Again. I thought I had seen a Matlack Will in which plantations in Virginia were listed. It was a Haines Will. I do know of a Timothy Matlack who moved from New Jersey to Virginia. This is what I have on him. Curt Miller Descendants of Timothy MATLACK Generation No. 1 1. TIMOTHY6 MATLACK (BENJAMIN5, JOHN4, WILLIAM3, GEORGE2 MATLOCK, JOHN1) was born Abt. 1763 in New Jersey, and died 1794 in Culpeper Co., Va.. He married HESTER ELDRIDGE December 19, 1785 in Evesham Township, Burlington Co., N. J., daughter of ABRAHAM ELDRIDGE and MARY LIPPINCOTT. Notes for TIMOTHY MATLACK: The following quote is recorded in the Wonderland - Matlack Family History. It is from the records of Asa Matlack, born in October 23, 1783. "Timothy Matlack of Benjamin and Jane Cheeseman Matlack was married 1786 to Hester, (Esther), Eldridge of Abraham and Mary and removed with his family in or about 1786 to Culpepper County Va. where my Uncle Samuel and father saw him and family at Culpepper Court House being (jailer) or keeper of the prison at that place in the 11th month of 1790. Timothy died at 31 years of age." Timothy changed the spelling of his name to Matlock in Virginia. His will is recorded in Will Book D, 1791 - 1803 (reel 32), page 135 - 136. His will was probated on 16 Sept. 1794. The Inventory & Appraisal was recorded on page 138 - 139 on 20 Oct. 1794. Notes for HESTER ELDRIDGE: Asa Matlack, see notes for her husband, spelled her name Esther. Her name is spelled Hester on her marriage certificate at the New Jersey Archives in Trenton New Jersey. Her name is recorded as Hestor Matlock in the 1810 census for Culpeper County, Va. She was over 45 and owned 4 slaves. No white people are listed as living with her. The 1820 census records Hestor living in Culpeper County, Virginia, She owned 4 slaves, 3 male and 1 female. Three people were engaged in manufacture. I assume these were the male slaves. Her name is recorded as Esther Matlack in the 1830 census for Culpeper County She owned 6 slaves, 1 male under 10, 3 females under 10, 1 female 10 to 24, and 1 female 36 to 55. The 1840 census records Esther living in Culpeper County. She owned 8 slaves, 2 males under 10, 1 male 10 to 24, 1 female under 10, 4 females 10 to 24, 1 female 24 to 35, and 1 female 36 to 55. Two people are listed as working in agriculture. Child of TIMOTHY MATLACK and HESTER ELDRIDGE is: i. JOSEPH7 MATLOCK. Notes for JOSEPH MATLOCK: Joseph's father changed his name from Matlack to Matlock when he moved to Virginia. Joseph's descendants probably spell their name Matlock. Page 106 of the 1810 census for Culpeper Co., Va. lists a Joseph Matlock, aged 16 to 25, living with his wife, also aged 16 to 25. Since the only Matlock's listed in the 1810 census for Culpeper Co. were Hestor Matlock, page 103, and Joseph Matlock, Joseph was probably the son of Hestor, widow of Timothy Matlock. The 1820 census for Culpeper Co. does not include Joseph, but a Joseph Matlock with two children was living in Orange Co. which is next to Culpeper Co. ==== MATLOCK Mailing List ==== Other MATLOCK, etc. resources on the net: <http://www.genforum.com/matlock> <http://searches.rootsweb.com/htdig/search.html> <http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/qindex.html> HAVE FUN AND TAKE YOUR TIME!
I first met Marie in 1985 She was living in Pima Az where she died May 27 1995. I recall calling her home one day finding a disconnected # ... I know she was ill and figured she was either in a Hospital or Convalescent Home No longer to care for her self.. Through the PC era I was later to be in contact with Maries Granddaughter who has Maries records.. But to my knowledge hasnt gone through them, as well as Winnie Bailey who also was in touch with Marie.. I Know that Marie and Melba Woods were connected through this IL bunch, but at this moment cant tell you exactly how.. Maries line was.. William and Eunice Thurston Matlock of IL... George W and Sarah Emma Hume Matlock, Levi F Matlock and HH Pennington, to Levi Edgar Matlock and Cath Dougherty Marie stated that there were 2 Men on the 1820 and 1830 Census that could be the father of her William, but she doesnt mention the State... Marie also claimed that she was from Nicholas of Rowan/ Burke Co NC... She had his children as, Hescott, Nathaniel, Elijah, Henry, John, Richard, James for this Nicholas.. At one time Marie was looking at Elijah Hosea as the father.. of this group that went to ILL.. Another point she made was William was born in Buncombe Co NC.. If the Elisha in Wilson Co is one in the same, it might would explain the TN connection this group appears to have had ... For the Wives two of the brothers were from TN.. Brenda

Brenda, Thinking out loud..... If Elisha Hosea is son of Nicholas and Mary Shelton. Nicholas was born 1709/1710. If they got married when about 20 that would put him having children about 1730-35. Elisha and guessing was born in 1740 or 1750 in that range. William b. 1812-1815 It appears that we might be missing a generation... But then maybe they married in their later years. Or the Elisha Hosea married a second time to a younger female. And that would work. does Marie mention any dates for Elisha Hosea or for his children. All three of these boys left NC ..Micajah can be found in IL as early as 1830, It appears that William went to MO and then to IL , by 1840 William is in IL..
