I was going through some printed material just now and I found a John W. Matlock, no birth date or wife, with children listed as: Elizabeth B., Louellen b 1849, William Lane b. 1851, Mary R., b.1852, Sarah Ann b. 1855, Caswell G. b. 1859, and West Tennessee b. 1861. I have no other information on them. Has anyone figured out who Elijah Matlock in MO belongs to. I originally had him connected to William and Catherine Sever Matlock. He is now just hanging around on his own. I am trying to get all my ducks in a row but they keep taking off in different directions.....HELP!! Good Afternoon. Many thanks to Sam Medlock for finding this record again! There is one more record that I can't find in my files. Must have misfiled it. Noooo that never happens to me! South Carolina Archives ST0080 - 393, Sec. of State, Colonial Land Grants, Vol 38, 1675-1705. 393- John Berringer has a grant of 1800 acres of land in Berkeley County butting to the north on land of William Hawet(hard to read), the land of James Beard and land not yet laid out to the southern end, the land of Benjamon Marion to the eastern on land not yet laid out, and to the southeast on land of Robert Metlocke (not sure of spelling), paying 18 shillings in current money on every first day o December after the year 1701. The said grant is dated 17 May 1701 and signed James Moore, Joseph Murton, Edmund Berringer. There is another record of Robert Malloch with a land acreage of 2000 acres or so on the Neck of Charleston. He brought in 72 servants and somewhere it says the land was escheated. The date was 1692 /4/6. Escheat - Reversion of the land to the crown or the state, in default of heirs. Sam and Terry
Good Morning All, Thanks for sharing information right and left ... good show. Brenda, Sorry I'm late in answering about Marie's pedigree. I have been out of town ... Jack and I slipped off to the Oregon Coast for our 65th Honeymoon. History of Marie Matlock Harris as best as I could follow her ... she ran her John's, William's ... etc .. together reguradless of the generation gaps ...in her rush to pass the information on 1. William (MATLOCK ?) (was in doubt) b. in New Kent Co. which was formed from York Co. Beaufort and Hydr. Parish/Co. also formed from these Co.'s m. Sarah SIMPSON(?) (The Sheriff of VA.?) 2. William MATLOCK b. 1881 in North Carolina and Eunice THURSTON Marie's great great grandmother (The Sherrif ?) William is related to the SWAIN's, of N.C. They went to ILL. together. By 1880 Nathan SWAIN with son George W. and dau. Frances, were living in the home of Marie's great great grandfather, William MATLOCK. William is related to WEST, TABOR, EWAIN, FULKERSON, TAYLOR, WADDLE (WADDELL), SETTLES and many others ... NOBLE, THURSTON and COOKSEY. Marie says that on the 1820 -1830 census there are 2 men with sons that are of age to belong to Marie, as father of her William. 3. George W. MATLOCK b. in Indiana m. 4 times (Wm. or perhaps George?, Sheriff of Buncombe Co. N.C. Left VA. without paying taxes. 3rd wife, Sarah Emma HULME Marie's great grandmother 4. Levi Ferdinard MATLOCK H.H. PENNINGTON Maries grandparents 5. Edgar Levi ... or Levi Edgar MATLOCK and Cath Elizabeth DAUGHERTY Her family came from Ireland, eventually Cherokee Blood was added Marie had a computer when I met her Melba didn't. Melba died about 1990. Marie knew her time was short .... when I came along she tried very hard to pass her information to me, said her family wasn't interested... Melba WOOD stated the same ... but Melba passed her work on, in a small book. >From the 3rd letter received (1994) from Marie, John had: Father of Nicholas of N.C. before 1750 father of Isham - would appear brother of Moore, Sr. born 1714 son of? Who? has to be John from England? or one of the sons born in England. Nicholas MATLOCK m. by 1720? known sons: 1. Hescott, b. VA. had sons Samuel & Isaac 2. Nathaniel, b. VA 1742 7 d. in KY 3. Elijah (Eli) sold land same time as Nathaniel before 1780. 4. Henry b. VA. ... to ILL. ? 1820 5. John b. VA. ... son Stephen, d. in Burke Co. 6. Richard b. N.C. 1761 7. Nathaniel, Jr. b. N.C. see 1790 census Burke Co. 8. 9. two sons not accounted for. Marie traces her line to this Nicholas in N.C. She states that "Melba WOOD" traced her line to the Nicholas MATLOCK of Casewelll Co. As I recall both of these Nicholas' descend from Moore Matlock and Jane Powell. Melba Wood set out a MATLOCK structured "family tree" in her Book ... I would like to lay it out for you all to pick apart or build on ..... the beginning is quite fuzzy. May I ? if so, please let me know Winnie

Melba, Joe and others. I have noticed the last couple of days that Isham's children has been posted and it was stated that they married in Washington Co, KY. Looking at the census for 1810... Glad you ask. Just follow the link below. http://www.ba044ancestry.com As you line seem lost after Henry of 1770, any on of your male cousins with the surname would be an excellent candidate. Melba Just thinking out loud.... With the name changes we have seen in Virginia...Matlack to Matlock and in South Carolina of Medlock to Matlock and back again are we looking in the wrong place for Isham? It such and unusual name in the family compared to John and William and so on...could it be a place name or a mothers maiden name? Or a corruption of Isaac?? Joe Matlock The surname Isham has it origins in 11th century England, specifically in Northamptonshire in Central England along the River Ise. The name is derived from the Saxon word 'Ham', meaning a small village and the River Ise, a tributary of the Nene. The name basically means 'from a small village on the River Ise.' The first decendants to use the name Isham are those of Azo, who was born in Northamptonshire in 1049. There have been reports that the name 'Azo' is also derived from the River Ise. The is also a village of Isham three miles south of Kettering, Northamptonshire, whose name has the same derivative. Several spellings have come about in the last several centuries, commonly due to phonetic spellings of the name. In alphabetical order they are: d'Eassem, d'Easum, d'Essum, d'Isham, deIsham, Eassem, Easum, Essum, Eston, Isom, and Ison in addition to Isham. The 'd' and 'de' at the beginning of the name were apparently dropped about 1494, for convenience. A genealogy report by Leonard d'Eason stated: "Royal College of Heraldry, London, England pointed out slight differences in spelling of what was the same family name frequently, indeed even in adjoining villages. The same family name was spelled differently because initially spelling seemingly being of little importance." The first direct ancestor of mine on official record in the United States is John Isham of Barnstable, Massachusetts (born: 03/31/1654 - died: 09/13/1713) . He was born in either England or Virginia, but he is first recorded in Barnstable in 1670. On 12/16/1687 John married Jane Parker (b: 03/21/1664 - d: 02/??/1720) and had 8 children: Jane (b:10/07/1689), John (b: 08/25/1691), Isaac (b: 02/07/1693) , Sarah (b: 12/??/1694) , Mary (b: 06/??/1697), Patience (b: 1699), Hannah (b: 1701), and Thankful (b: 1706). Lamport Hall, the ancestral home of the Isham family over 400 years from 1560, when John Isham, the fourth son of Euseby Isham of Pytchley acquired the manor there, and until the death of Sir Gyles Isham, the twelfth baronet, in 1976. Sir Gyles bequeathed Lamport Hall and its contents to a charitable trust, the 'Lamport Hall Preservation Trust', which now administers the estate. Here are some links to Lamport Hall sites >>> Melba Bolinger <granneronline@earthlink.net> 3/11/2004 10:02:29 AM >>> Joe: I have no idea who Isham Elias's father was I've never been able to go any farther back. I have severial Cemetery books from the Crawford /Gasconade area of Mo. One is Matlock 2 Cemetery, Matlock Cemetery,(Homesteaded by Jesse H.Matlock 1851) and Matlock/Morris/Simily. Rolla Cemetery book has several Medlock/Matocks in it. I have no proof of this but, my grandfather always said that Isham settled where the postoffice is now in Steelville Mo. and was buried in the Meramic bottoms, near there. Of course there were no markers, just rocks. If it would help any I could send you copies of the cemeteries , I have extra. Joe I sent you everything I have on Timothy Matlack, his wife Hester, and son Joseph. Based on place of birth for Joseph Matlick in the 1850 census, he could very well be the son of Timothy and Hester. (It would be nice if they could have kept their names straight. Didn't they know we would be looking?) My primary source was the records of Thomas Chalkly Matlack, Book 19, Descendants of John Matlack and His Two Wifes Hannah and Mary No. 3, page 140. These records have been microfilmed by the LDS. I guese I will have too brave the massive construction on I295 and go down to the Gloucester County Historical Society to look at their copy of the Microfilm to see if it has more. Hi Joe Terry and I have always thought that our James (mentioned here) and Silus were either brothers or at least cousins and possibly David also fits into that bunch if so it would lend more strength that James was the son of Nathaniel in Abbeville county (he had a lot of children) Sam
Thanks Curt got to run. We have consturction too. See you tomorrow. Brenda, The Martha with Jason Jr. age 16.. Could be their child who was missed on the 1850 census. Could be Solomon S's wife... he married a Martha but last name is unknown. Could be child of Moore and Rachel. I have her as child of Jason Jr. and Elizabeth. And she could have gone to MO with her brother James.
