At this time, I don't know the dates. "They Multiplied," of Matlock newsletter published in 1974, printed a power of attorney where Charles B. Matlock of Dickson County, Tennessee appoints Pritchett and ---- attorneys to recover his back pay for service in the war. This was dated October 10, 1815. It says two payroll vouchers showing him in Cocke's West Tennessee Militia, Capt. Francis S. Matlock a Sergeant in my Division of Tennessee Militia, has performed a tour of duty of six months days in the service of the United States - that his good conduct, subordination and valor, under the most trying hardships, entitle him to the gratitude of his country; and he is hereby HONORABLY DISCHARGED. Wm. Carroll Major - General 2d Division Tennessee Militia. NOTE: The above Charles B. Matlock appears on the census records of Franklin Co., Ala. in 1820, 1830 and 1840.According to these records, Charles B. Matlock had at least 9 children. By 1850 all this family seems to have disappeared from the county. To my knowledge, no one is working on this line. He almost has to be closely allied to Littleberry - Franklin Co. 1820, 1830 and 1840.From: "Wanda Albers" <WandaR7@worldnet.att.net>To: <MATLOCK-L@rootsweb.com>Date: Wednesday, April 14, 2004 12:17:40 PMSubject: Re: [MATLOCK-L] Charles B Matlock Brenda, For Charles of Littleberry and Mary I just have the 1830 and 1840 census. Hi Brenda This is what I had found Joe Matlock 1. WILLIAM CARROLL2 MEDLOCK (UNKNOWN1 MATLOCK) was born 01 April 1821 in Tennessee, and died 01 May 1896 in Puoghkeepsie, Sharp County, Arkansas. He is buried in the Barnes Cemetery, Sharp County, Arkansas. He married (1) HESTER ANN CURTIS 07 July 1842 in Maryville, Blount County, Tennesee. She was born 1817. Wanda I am not going to be of much help on this one. I can add on one small bit as below... "So looking at this census...do you think that John and Mahala of Independence could be Littleberry and Phoebe's. He was born about 1816-1819 and in TN. He states that on the 1860 and 1870 census. In 1840 John was 2 doors from Littleberry. Notice only one male child. And in 1860 only 1 male child being born before 1840." No I think the John who married Mahala Denton is the son on Benjamin Matlock and Mary "Lea". The only information I have on Charles Brooks is what you sent me.. Joe Matlock >>> "Wanda Albers" <WandaR7@worldnet.att.net> 4/16/2004 4:39:40 PM >>> Joe, Not sure if this is your work or if it was from someone else. The email was all bunched together. But want to run something past you to see what you think. Brenda perked my interest on this one yesterday and this morning. IN your post you have this: William C. Medlock, who is in Independence Co., Ar. 1860-70, is John William Clark Matlock. His line looks like this: John William Clark Matlock, b.ca.1838 John Henry Thomas Matlock in Franklin Co., Al 1840, b. ca.1817. Benjamin Matlock and Mary Polly Lea. Mary Matilda Matlock, b. Jan.14, 1836; is the daughter of John Henry Thomas Matlock and Mahalia Denton. Now: If John H. Matlock was in NC in 1860 and 1880 and in AR in 1870 as stated in your email. Do you really think that the 1870 one goes with the John H. on NC. Because... in 1880 John H. has 2 children living with him. And it states that they were born in NC and that their mother was born in NC. He also states in his census that he was born in NC. 1860 NC, Caswell Co, Yanceyville P.O Aug 20th, pg 757 John Mattock, 42,m,w,NC,Farmer, v.R/E $5,160, v.pers $8,000 Elizabeth, 50,f,w,NC,v.pers $11,1000. NOTE: This Elizabeth looks to be his sister according to the 1880 census.. 1870 (need) 1880 NC, Caswell Co, Leesburg Twp, pg 16-14 John Matlock, head,m,w,62,Wd,NC,NC,NC Sarah J., dau,f,w,12,NC,NC,NC John L., son,m,w,9,NC,NC,NC Elizabeth, sister,f,w,72,S,NC,NC,NC. He is born 1817 about the same time as Littleberry's John is born. Littleberry and Phoebe were in Wilson Co, TN but do not know for how long so Charles H., John and possibly another child could have been born in TN. Right? Okay I agree with you all that William C's name could be John William C. Matlock...simply because his brother had two middle initials as well. 1840 AL, Franklin Co, Russelville, pg 262; John Mitlock, 10001-00001 1850 (need) 1860 AR, Independence Co, Barren Twp, pg 115 John H. Matlock, 54,m,w,TN,Farmer,v.R/E $400,v.pers $300 Mahala, 48,f,w,SC John HALL, 80,m,w,AR Okay if John H. that is in AR in 1860 and 1870 is the same one in NC in 1880. Then he named 3 male children with names similiar to John. John William C., Johnathan B., and John L. which is listed on the 1880 census. So I think that perhaps this needs to be looked at again. Also, may I ask who you have as wife and children of Charles Brooks brother to Littleberry. I know that both were in Franklin Co, AL and I don't have anything. Thanks for looking thru this with me to see what I'm looking at wrong or if someone else might have an error. Wanda
Joe, The Charles Brooks was in AL in 1830 and 1840. This Charles and Susannah were in Grainger County, TN and he died about 1800. Children of CHARLES MATLOCK and SUSANNAH are: i. Wanda, I guess I didnt make it clear in that I think John Albert Medlock is not a son of Li ttleberry. I have them as different age and different place of Birth. My Guess and only a guess is John A. Medlock traveled with a large group of Greenville Co. People to Pontotoc Miss. Where he Married Martha . My Guess, only a guess, is that his Father was William Medlock b1795 son of John Medlock and Catherine.
David, I'm sorry I must have misunderstood your post... I was thinking you said that John that was in Pontotoc Co was Littleberry's and Franklin was living there at the same time. My mistake. Do you know where John and Martha moved when they left Pontotoc County MS. Is see that the George Gambrell/Gambell's and Nixon's are still there in 1860. What can you tell me about them? Where did they go? And, who do you have as wife of Littleberry's John? Do you think that he is the one that went to AR? Sam and David, Sam....thanks for those names. But they failed to pick up A. Medlock age 50 and Mary his wife. They are listed on the 1850 census as being on the same page as Simpson. I had the John and Martha. Thanks David, Thanks David for your input...but seems that I have a different look at the John of Pontotoc Co, MS being married to Martha. This is how I see it. First.....I do agree that there is an error either on the Marriage date of Littleberry and Phoebe or their first son Charles H. I believe that Charles and perhaps a couple of the older children were born in TN. Littleberry and Phoebe married in Wilson Co, TN.... So if Charles was born in TN then it is possible that John was also born in TN. Does anyone know their arrival date in AL? Second....John that is married to Martha Gambrell is stated on the 1850 that they were both born in SC. They are living next door to Martha's parents. As far as I know Littleberry and Phoebe were in TN then to AL. Not in SC. Thanks for George Gambrell's wife's name I did not know that it was Nixon. So that means that I would disagree with the statement that this John that is in Pontotoc Co, MS is son of Littleberry and Phoebe. Third... There is a John on the 1840 census in Franklin Co., AL who lives 2 doors from Littleberry. 1840 AL, Franklin Co, Russelville, pg 262; John Mitlock, 10001-00001 Notice that he only has one son.... And remember now that this John could have been born in TN. I do not find them on the 1850 census but they do show up in Independence Co, AR in 1860 and 1870. 1860 AR, Independence Co, Barren Twp, pg 115 John H. Matlock, 44,m,w,TN,Farmer, v.R/E $800 v.pers prop $800 Mahala, 40,f,w,SC John W., 21,m,w,AL Jonathan B., 19,m,w,AL Robert C. J., 16,m,w,AL Nancy S., 8,f,w,AR NOTICE: They have only one son that was born before 1840. 1870 AR, Independence Co, Barren Twp, pg 17 John H. Matlock, 54,m,w,TN,Farmer,v.R/E $400, v.pers $300 Mahala, 48,f,w,SC John HALL, 80,m,w,AR I have seen that this Mahala might be DENTON. But have seen no documentation to prove this. Sooo... I am saying that I think that the John and Mahala in Independence Co, AR could be Littleberry's son. Fourth... Yes, there is a Franklin in Pontotoc in 1850... And I believe he is Littleberry's son who was born about 1825. But if you look at the map Pontotoc Co, MS and Franklin Co, AL join one another. So it is not a far stretch to believe that they may have lived near the border. However, because most times people in the same county are kin...this may not be the case this time. I believe that John and Martha were only there because her parents were. And it just happened that Franklin was there as well. This is just my thought process and I hope that you followed me okay. Would appreciate any other comments. ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Nixon" <Denixon@conwaycorp.net> To: <MATLOCK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 18, 2004 11:25 AM Subject: Fw: [MATLOCK-L] Re: John of Franklin and william and Rebecca of Greenville. > > > > I have a couple of observation on the info of Littleberry. I dont know anything about John William Clark.. born Dec 1838 and dying May 3 1864 Newton Co AR.. The William C Im looking at is this one: JOHN WILLIAM CLARK MATLOCK, b. December 1838, Franklin County, Alabama; d. 03 May 1864, Richland Creek, Newton County, Arkansas; m. MARY CAROLINE MAYLAND, 1861. In 1860 Newton Co I show this John: 1860 MATLOCK JOHN Newton County AR 1026 Boston Mountain John Matlock 24 WM Farmer KY Pernica 22 WF AR Federick 1 WM AR but this is the William Im looking at: 1870 MATLOCK WILLIAM Independence Co AR 177 White River William Matlock 33 MW Farm Labor AL Mary 24 FW AR Kelley 3 MW AR Sarah 1 FW AR 1880 MATLOCK WILLIAM Independence Co AR Christian 266 William Matlock Head WM 37 AL TN TN Farmer Eliza Wife WF 30 MS TN AL Kellie Son WM 10 AR AL MS Sarah Dau WF 8 AR AL MS William Son WM 6 AR AL MS Mary Dau WF 5 AR AL MS Ella Dau WF 6/12 AR AL MS Its unknown When and where William died.. But by 1900 the son Kelly is in Denton Co TX...
Well I suppose it could be the John of Franklin Co AL>. I show that this John was born 1811-1820.. and that he is living near Littleberry in 1840.. This John has a son that was born between 1836-1840.. and his wife was also born 1811-1820 age group 20-29... From what I can tell in 1830.. Littleberry and or Charles could be this John's Father... Now this is where I am heading with this idea... In Independence Co AR 1860 We have a Mary Matilda Matlock age 24 who married Andrew J Sturch Andrew died and Before 1870 Mary Matilda married a Lawson Scott and was again Widowed and is listed in Independence Co AR.. Abt the same time her brother William C Matlock appears in 1870... hes age 33 shows he was born in AL.. Well Looking High and Low for Mary Matilda and William in 1860 and 1850.. I believe I have found them, I think that John Matlock.. Son of Littleberry or Charles died or deserted his wife, who I believe is named Josephine? (dont Know her maiden name)... I believe that There was a mistake on the 1840 Census and that a dau born abt 1835 should of been marked.. Anyway.. I believe that Josephine Matlock married 2nd Sampson Williams before 1842 and that this family in 1850 is them.. 1850 WILLIAMS SAMPSON Franklin Co AL Dist 5 112 Sampon Williams 30 M Carpenter NC Josie 33 F NC Mary M 15 F NC Should be Matlock William C 13 M NC Should be Matlock Fanny 8 F AL John W 6 M AL Francis 3 M AL Nancy J 2 F AL I also believe that this is Sampsons father, in 1850 is the one listed below,.... This James Williams is in Franklin Co AL in 1830 and 1840..
