Jana RECOLLECTIONS OF A WIDOW WOMAN By S. C. Turnbo Mrs. Mary Sanders widow of Hiram Sanders relates the following. "I was born on Finley Creek in Wright County, Mo. in 1837. My parents were [Isaac and Prudie Medlock]. My mother died on Finley Creek when I was 8 years old. My father died in Illinoise. All the early settlers that I have a distinct recollection of that lived on Finley Creek near where we lived was my grandfather [Henry and Rachell Medlock] and my uncle Bill Williams and my aunt Rhoda Williams. I came to Lick Creek below where Gainsville Mo. now is in 1847 and was married to Hiram Sanders in 1853. We were married on the old John Sanders land on Lick Creek. This place is near one mile below the Steve Sanders Place. Cage Foster was a justice of the peace then and he officiated. I remember the names of some of the citizens who lived on Lick Creek. There were Joe and Bob VanMeter who were brothers. Joe's wife was named Sarah. Bob married Polly Turley daughter of Jake Turley. There was also Abe West and Rhoda West his wife. John Howell and Eliza his wife. Sole Workman, Jim Workman and Elizabeth Workman were children of Isaac Workman but were grown when I first saw them and there was Capt. Ben Bray who was killed or died a natural death at Springfield Mo. during the war. These all lived on Lick Creek in the early days of Ozark County. The first school I went to was taught on Lick Creek by Charles Goobey one half mile below where Steve Sanders lived. The first day of this school is very vivid in my mind from the reason that I cried all day. I was afraid that I would violate the rules of school and get a whipping. Steve Sanders wife was named Annie. She was a daughter of Cage Foster. Fosters wifes name was Sally. Grandfather Allin Sanders we always called him was my husbands father. His wife was named Annie, who one day picked a spot of ground where she said she desired to be buried. This is on what is now the Doctor Arnold Place one half a mile above the mouth of Possom Walk Creek, and when she passed over the dark river of death her remains received interment where she wished to rest. There are also two of Jake Foster's little girls buried there, the names of which were Mary Elizabeth and Sarah Eliza. Mr. Thomas Guifford the first merchant at Gainsville formerly lived at Rock Bridge. When he came to where Gainsville now stands he hauled the logs of a log building and put them up and covered the wall and put his goods and groceries in it until he could construct a better house. Guifford's wife was Sarah Ann daughter of John Sanders. Tom Lord the noted chimney builder built a number of stone chimneys in Ozark County before the war. Some of his work is standing to the present day. Soon after the close of the war in 1869 he built a black smith shop on Gooley's Spring Creek and lived there several years and made horse shoes and shod horses and did much other work for the settlers. One day he went up on the hill near the black smith shop and selected a place to be buried which was near a post oak tree. He marked the spot by placing a stone on it and when the time arrived for him to quit shoeing horses and depart from this world his body was given burial where he requested to be laid. Mr. Lord's son Bartlet is also buried there and his grandson Morgan Wood is buried there. Morgan was a son of Jim Wood and Sally Ann, daughter of Tom Lords. Millie a sister of Tom Lords married Jim Barnette another noted blacksmith. ==== MATLOCK Mailing List ==== GREAT search engines! http://www.theultimates.com/ (6 engines in one!) http://www.metacrawler.com/ (10 engines in one!) http://www.bc1.com/users/sgl/ (focused on genealogy links)
Anybody know this family? Joe Matlock Descendants of Stephen Matlock Generation No. 1 1. STEPHEN1 MATLOCK was born 1773 in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and died 28 October 1853 in Tattnall County, Georgia. He married (1) MARY STANLEY 05 March 1809 in Tattnall County, Georgia. She was born 1792, and died 14 October 1837 in Tattnall County, Georgia. She is buried in the Matlock Family Cemetery on the family land in Tattnall County, Georgia, near the Altamaha River.. They are buried in the Matlock Family Cemetery on the family land in Tattnall County, Georgia, near the Altamaha River.. Notes for STEPHEN MATLOCK:"Stephen Matlock died October 28,1853, leaving a large estate, which took about 6 years to settle. Co-executors were his son Stephen Matlock and his daughter, Florida's husband, Elza Tillman. Evidently, his eldest son, John, was disinherited for he was not listed as one of 7 heirs who drew lots out of a hat to decide who would inherit 7 slaves for each heir from the 47 slaves in the estate in 1854. About 1856 or 57 the disinherited son, John, went to court to challenge the way the executors were administering the estate. Later, court records reveal that Stephen Matlock and Elza Tillman, as executors had to pay $100.00 in legal fees for this law suit. I have no other information on this John Matlock and could not find him on the GA Censuses." The information concerning Stephens children came "from the 1850 Montgomery Co. My James Berry Roberts is residing with Zach and Sarah in Jackson Co. (1860 census). I have been trying to follow some of the Littleberry Matlock line and have a question for you. According to the following (and other sources) Zachariah Matlock/Medlock married Sarah Tucker in Wilson Co. Tennessee January 23, 1811. Per the Wilson Co genweb site, a transcription of the marriages shows the following: 1811, JAN 23 MEDLOCK, Stephen marr. TUCKER, Sarah Do you know, is this Stephen the same as Zachariah? Without seeing the original document, one could assume that the transcription is an error. Any insight would be appreciated. Joe, Looking at the information you posted on Littleberry. I'm thinking that you are combining two Littleberry's together... but I may be wrong. Just not real sure about some of these older families....especially since there is not much documentation. One: Could it be.....Littleberry that was married to Christian (maiden name unknown) was the Littleberry that was in Botetourt Co, VA, Grainger Co, TN then to Pendleton County, South Carolina. Last heard of there about 1803. This Littleberry may be connected to the Charles and John that were in Grainger Co, TN one died about 1799 and the other about 1801. They were mentioned on a military pargaraph that has been posted on Botetourt Co, VA. All coming to Grainger County, TN with McPherson's and Rector's. I'm thinking that this Littleberry may be son of William (1702) and was born in the 1740 range. And I'm also thinking that Moses Moore born about 1775 may be a son of Littleberry and Christian. If not he may be a child of one of the ones that were in Grainger County. You have him as step child of Littleberry and Mary Light... Two: Littleberry of the Wilson Co, TN and then to Franklin Co, AL.. I have him as son of Moore and Jane. Born about 1755-1758. You have Charles Brooks Matlock in one statement died in 1819. I think that Charles B. may be Luke's Charles. Charles Brooks Matlock signed a deposition in AL for Tharp in 1842 maybe be brother to Littleberry that married Phoebe Tharp. Rial I have placed with Moore and Jane Powell Matlock. Joe and all, What have you got on Littleberry son of Moore? David Nixon
Hi David, Hope this helps a little anyway. On 15 Feb 1795 David bought goods at the estate sale of James Pollock. There were also notes against the estate of David Medlock. I guess the other David was a son of the older David. One other note Thomas Medlock bought g goods at the sale of George Swindle on 29 and 30 October 1812. Sam
COOKSON LONG'S COMPANY. Lycoming County Pennsylvania at the time of the American Revolution The muster roll of Capt. Cookson Long's company, of the Second Battalion, county militia, has been preserved, and may be found on page 329 Vol. XIV, Pennsylvania Archives. That the reader may see who composed that company of rangers along the river at that time it is reproduced in full. Many familiar names will be recognized, as descendants of these rangers dwell in the county today. Other names are strange, because the owners were either killed or left the valley when their terms of service expired. Captain, Cookson Long. First Lieutenant, James Hayes. Second Lieutenant, Joseph Bonser. Ensign, Joseph Newman. Privates.-, , Richard Matlock,., Any body know how this is?? Joe Matlock
David, I've always thought that Thomas that you have listed first... was son of Thomas that died in Clarke County, AL in 1854. The 1850 census is the only one that has him marked as born in SC. The 1860 and 1870 show him marked in NC. The reason that I think he was son of Thomas....may not make sense to anyone else but it is what I've based my reasoning on. Thomas Henry born 1788 in NC (later TN) died 1854 in Clarke Co, AL; his wife is Elizabeth. Hope I don't loose you on this one. Elizabeth is in Houston Co, TX in 1860 and Thomas b. 1808 was in Houston Co, in 1850. So mother probably came to TX after old Thomas died. Now look at Thomas (1808) first son....he was born in IN about 1834. Thomas Henry's was murdered and died in IN and Thomas had to testify at the trial of the man who killed him in Hendricks Co., IN. This was in 1826 (I believe). Thomas Henry's father died in Morgan Co., IN in 1829 and left land to him. Thomas Henry sold his land to his brother. This transaction was about 1836 and filed 1841. So looks as if Thomas Henry was back and forth to IN. I'm thinking that maybe younger Thomas made these trips with him and possibly married and stayed there for a time. 1850 TX, Houston Co, page 166, line 24; #356-3556 Thomas Medlock, 42,m,farmer,v.land $1600, SC Rebecca, 33,f,TN Charles, 16,m,IN Mary A, 7,f,MO Thomas N, 6,f,MO John C, 4,m,Houston Co, Rebecca, 2,f,Houston Co MILLER Mary J, 13,f,TN Henry MEDLOCK, 1,m,TX Would like to know what you think. The name Elizabeth Matlick is all I have on this individual. But if she was born in 1823 (note the gap in the last three births)she would fit right into this group who have relations in West Virginia. Va.) to Scotland County, Mo., in 1850. With him were his wife, Sarah Ervin Matlick, and a number of sons, including Samuel, Josiah, Joseph, Zachariah and Elijah. A number of his grandsons were said to have fought in the Civil War. I don't know when or where Joseph or Sarah died, other than a year (1864) for Joseph. This information from a 1914 county history of Preston County, W. Va., where another son, John (my ancestor) stayed. Joseph was born in New Jersey, came to Pennsylvania around 1798, then to Preston, then to Missouri. Would like to prove his and his wife's parentage, and find out when they died. Any information or knowledge of this family is appreciated. Are there death records in Scotland county that might give parents' names or birthplaces? Has the 1860 census been transcribed? Did Joseph or Sarah have a will or other estate record? Are there any cemetery indexes or newspaper obituary files that might shed light on this? Thank you! Good Morning. Recently while in SC I bought a book because it contained one interesting name - Benjamin Maddock. Naturalization Records Federal Courts of SC 1790-1906 A Companion to Film M1183 Federal Records Compiled by Edith Greisser hjeg@inetgenesis.com This film consisting of four handwritten volumes are part of the records of District Courts of the United States, Record Group 21 and are housed in the Archives Branch of the Federal Archives and Record Center in Atlanta, GA. There are 6 columns..... Name: Benjamin Maddock Age: 47y Nation: Stockholm, Sweden Residence: blank Occupation: mariner Admitted: January 17, 1807 From Edith's instructions I take this to be the date Benjamin became a citizen. Does not say how long he may have been here. Neither does she say which of the 4 volumes has Benjamin's name. There is a list of Lawyers and Judges in SC and I'm assuming the names of new citizens were gleaned from the records of these Lawyers and Judges of SC. Edith says some names were easy to read and some not but reminded us that the names were copied once from the records and then by her, so mistakes could be present. If we could put Benjamin with a particular court by the name of the Judge, then we would know where he lived. Anyone who has this Benjamin already in place of residence? Terry
