    2. Joe Matlock
    3. This is way far "moore" than you every wanted to know, but so little is out there about the Matlocks and the Wiits that I save everything....hope this helps. Joe Matlock Descendants of John Matlock Generation No. 1 1. JOHN7 MATLOCK (WILLIAM JAMES?6, ) was born Abt. 1734, and died Aft. 1780 in Burke County, North Carolina. He married JUDAH JUDITH WITT 22 November 1756 in Goochland County, Virginia, daughter of JOHN WITT and ELIZABETH LIPTROT. She was born Abt. 1735 in Virginia. Notes for JOHN MATLOCK:From Lou PERO, 10 Oct 1992; Dear Winnie, The descendants of John MATLOCK were associated with the HUSLEY's and the two families stayed together for over 100 years, down through the Dan River area of N C/Va border - New Kent Co. VA., & Burke Co. N.C. during the Rev War and then into Greenville Co. S.C. by about 1785. John MATLOCK was a brother-in-law of Charles HULSEY, their wives apparently the daughters of John WITT. On 2 Jul 1756, a son, Charles, was born to Charles HUSLEY and Hannah WITT. On 1 Jul 1759, a daughter, Parthenia was born to Charles HUSLEY and Anna WITT. [Note: Lou PERO was a non MATLOCK, but she found the above information when searching for her family history ... I wonder if the name she mentions as "HUSLEY" could possibly be "HORSLEY"?] Not My Note JWM Arthur Fred Jones, JrEntries: 250 Updated: Sat Aug 25 22:31:14 2001 Contact: Terri Jones aimwolf@yahoo.comID: I180 Name: John MEDLOCK Matlock Sex: M Change Date: 24 NOV 2000 Marriage 1 Judah WITTMarried: 22 NOV 1756 in Henry County, Virginia Note: Note: They lived in Henry County, Virginia and Rockingham County,North Carolina. http://www.gendex.com/users/monty/fam10750.htmlClan Montgomery Society Genealogy Database Husband: John MEDLOCK Born: ABT 1700 at: Married: at: Died: 22 NOV 1756 at: ,Goochland,VA Father: Mother: Other Spouses: Wife: Judah WILL Born: at: Died: at: Father: Mother: Other Spouses: CHILDRENName: John MEDLOCKBorn: 27 SEP 1758 at: ,Goochland,VA Married: at: Died: BEF 1800 at: Greenville,SC Spouses: Catherine 1770: *** ** - 1770 List of Tithables, Pittsylvania Co, VA Peter Copland list: David Matlock - 1; Charles Balew - 1, 2 scalps wanting Robert Chandler list: John Medlock - 1 "pd" From: "David Nixon" <Denixon@conwaycorp.net>To: <MATLOCK-L@rootsweb.com>Date: Wednesday, May 12, 2004 11:45:58 AMSubject: Fw: [MATLOCK-L] Botetourt Co John and Judith, Didnt show up in Gereenville untill 1789. I've abstracted all the pertinent info from eachentry. I hope someone will find something useful. JanetFamily Puzzlers 1992No. 1229, p. 6 Found in the Douglas Register that in Goochland Co., VA, John MATLOCK or MEDLOCK m. Nancy Witt, and Charles Hulsey m. Hannah Witt, probably daus. of John Witt. MATLOCK and Hulsey bought land adjacent in Greenville Co., SC 1789-90, as did Charles Estes, possibly father of Joshua Estes who m. Elizabeth Hulsey and Jesse Chandler, somehow connected with the family of Michael Henderson. Silas and James MEDLOCK may have been sons of Nathaniel MATLOCK, possible brother of Mary MATLOCK who m. Garrett Rutledge in 1791, and later m. Waddy Thompson. All these people lived 1790-1800 in Greenville Co., SC; by 1805 many of them were in NE GA and by 1818 some came to Franklin Co., AL. The Hulseys and MATLOCKS lived earlier in Burke Co., NC. Many may have been in Louisa Co., VA in 1750s with Tyree Harris, William Anderson, Samuel & Anthony Waddy, Thomas Thompson and Nathaniel Pope. iv. MARY MATLOCK, b. 1773, Pittsylvania County, Virginia; m. (1) GARRETT RUTLEDGE, 1791, Greenville County, South Carolina; b. Abt. 1770; d. 1795, Greenville County, South Carolina; m. (2) WADDY THOMPSON, Abt. 1795, Greenville County, South Carolina; b. Abt. 1761, Virginia; d. 14 April 1837, Franklin County, Alabama. She gives her father as John Matlock, and her first husband as Garret Rutledge. Joe Greene, 611 Tarragona Way, Daytona Beach, FL 32114, (1991, now deceased) has researched the Matlocks, and gave me my best clues to the origins of the Hulseys, since he had tracked the Matlocks by noting their close association with the Hulseys. Something of this same thing is possible with the Matlocks. Here is one paragraph from a very informative letterfrom Joe to Anna and me: "...Based on the 'Douglas Register' I conclude that John Matlock (Medlock) and Charles Hulsey of Goochland Co were brothers -in-law, who both married Witts, probably sisters....John Matlock and Charles Hulsey bought adjacent land in Greenville Co, SC around 1789/1790. So did Charles Estes and Jesse Chandler. I feel these families intermarried....Jesse Chandler seemed to be closely connected with the family of Michael Henderson. My g-g grandfather James Medlock (who married a Sallie Jones) named a daughter Mary Henderson Medlock. Silas Medlock, probable brother to James Medlock, named a son, Henderson Medlock, according to the 1850 census (not verified by other family records). I suspect James and Silas were sons of Nathaniel Medlock, of the same area, and grandsons of the aforementioned John Matlock. Nathaniel Matlock may have been brother to your Mary Matlock, who married Garret Rutledge in 1791 and then Waddy Thompson, according to your letter."Birth: 1773 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia Note: Her birthdate is derived from the fact that she said she was near 69 years of age when she applied to receive the back pay for Robert Thompson. The map locks and the whole cities apparently lived near each other and probably intermarried from the early 1700s. In the first two or three pages of the Hulsey book, I listed all the deeds I could find for both families. It appears to me that they must have been living in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, which later became Henry County about the time Mary was born. This area is right along the Virginia/North Carolina border. I think they then moved to Rowan County, North Carolina from which Burke County was formed in 1777, and from there to Greenville County, South Carolina probably a few years later. Mary says she wasbrought up in Greenville County. I should add that earlier researchers thought she had said Granville district, but to me it looks like Grinville, which would most likely be Greenville.1 Census: 1850 Franklin County, Alabama Note: She is in the household of John Tharp, her age given as 75 born South Carolina. The only Rev. soldiers I can think of off the top of my head were the 2 Captains Mattocks, Charles and John, who fought at Kings Mountain. I am seeing that there was a Valentine Mattox said to have been born abt 1750 Bedford Co VA refered to as Capt..it is believed that he married Sarah Shrewsbury and is said to have died 1825 Wayne Co KY.. This is the info I have on Valentine now if hes a the Capt mentioned above, I dont know... Valentine Mattox signed the Oath of Allegiance in Bedford County in 1777 – Nathaniel Shewsbury on 15 August, and "Val Maddox" - probably Valentine Mattox - signed on 10 October (DAR Magazine, December 1957, p. 1343). Valentine Matlock in Bedford Co., VA.....1787 census VA, Bedford Co #205; Valentine Matlock; 00067, 6 horses or mares, 7 cattle The closest that I can get to a Valentine being in KY was this: 1820 MATTOX ----TINE * Daviess Co KY 013 301101-21101-01

    3. Who else could it be? Moore b. 1717/1718 was WAY too old. Moore Jr. was born about 1773 so he was too young. Moore Sr. was to old for Military as well but my Joseph Grubb enlisted into the Civil War at abt 56... But was discharged later for old age.. OKAY,...who has record that John who married Judith Witt is son of William 1702? Could that be wrong? 3. Good Morning Terry, I don't think we decide that Rial was brother to Absalom due to JUST that record in Pendleton. Rial is also found in Alabama where Littelberry was (brother to Absaolm)... He was also found in Roane County, TN, where Moore, Jason and William were (brothers of Absalom and Littleberry). Don't know why he was still in South Carolina in 1811. Rial just seemed to be where other (possibly) family members were. He did not seem to stay anywhere for a long period of time. Absolom's Rial TOMBSTONE: Rial H Matlock, 29 Jan 1800 - 21 Feb 1873, Old Union Baptist Chruch Cem, Warren Co, KY; Masonic Emblem on stone; " Warren Co, KY Cemetery Records" I believe that Absolom was in KY by October 1801.. That is where his second son said he was born. Have a great day. 3. Brenda, Looking at this. I see that Moore is there in 1780's. Last record that I have of Moore in Halifax County, VA is when he sold his son Zachariah land in 1777. Jane, his wife, is on Halifax County, VA tax list in 1782. Next record I have for him is 1787 in TN.....which by the way is the same year that I find a John in Hawkins County, TN. Don't know if this is Moore's John or this John from Botetourt. The one military record shows John, Charles, Berry Matlock. The McPherson's, Looney's and Rectors...which all go to the same general area of TN (Grainger Co). The McPherson's, Looney's and John's children are in the Roane County in the early 1800. So could these all be brothers... Could they all be children of William 1702. Botetourt is a bordering county of Bedford. Question: Did Jane and Moore separate? Jane in Halifax in 1782 and Moore in Botetourt at the same time. The 1782 Tax list is the last record of have of Moore's wife Jane. 3. Good Morning Lynn I made those changes. Amanda went with a different Stephen. I sent out all I had on this family. I don't have an older Stephen or a William in the area at the right time. Any idea who they may be? Joe Matlock >>> "Lynn Hall" <lmhall@houston.rr.com> 5/6/2004 7:38:08 PM >>> Thanks Joe, for bringing up my gggrandfather, Stephen Matlock of Orangeburg County, SC and Tattnall County, GA. Is anyone else out there researching this family.? I still have not been able to link them into an earlier family. Stephen could have been the son of the earlier Stephen Matlock who lived on Grannies's Quarter Creek north of Camden, SC just before the Revolutionary War battle of Camden. A William Matlock lived nearby and may have been his brother. In Orangeburg, the younger Stephen bought land in Liberty County, GA with John Duke. Liberty County was just east of Stephen's plantation, which he developed later in Tattnall County. He was one of the largest land owners in the county and owned many slaves. Extensive records of the settling of his estate are available at the Tattnall County Courthouse. It took seven years to finish settling Stephen's estate. Joe, you have that Stephen Matlock, Jr. married Amanda Jane Callihan before he married Elizabeth Tillman. I have no record of that and I have that he and Elizabeth married young in Georgia. Could you tell me where you found Amanda? Also, I have that my great grandmother, Florida Matlock married Dr. Lewis DeSheels first. He died soon after their marriage and she married Elza Tillman, Elizabeth Tillman's brother. He died in the Civil War. Then in the 1870s she married Thomas P. Payne. I would greatly appreciate any information about this family that anyone might have. Lynn M. 3. Joe, If your software is like mine. If I have a person tied to two different parents..It will indicate step-child... You might check that. T Haven't found anything that would indicated Rial's birth unless we assume that he became of age when he was on tax list in Roane County, TN in 1805... If this is true he would have been born about or before 1784... Jane would have been forty-nine in 1784. Not impossible for a woman to have a child at 49.. Children can be born in later years when going thru change of line.....mishap probably but still could happen... But the only other tax list before 1805 for Roane is 1802 and he was not on that and neither was Moore. They were still in Upper East TN. So his age I do not know for sure. The Charles Brooks you just sent that was married to Susannah and children listed in Grainger County, TN. I have him as just Charles... No middle name... I have him as son of William Matlock and Beulah Rice (this has not been proven). Came from Botetourt County, VA and died in Grainger County, TN...leaving 10 heirs. He died before 1802. His will was filed in Knox Co, TN in 1796. Also in the area at the time of Charles's death was John who died before 1802 in Grainger.. I believe that they were brothers. John's children went to Roane, McMinn, Rhea and that area. Also, in Grainger, according to deed in SC was Littleberry and Christian. Okay the Charles B. son of Luke and Charles Brooks son of Littleberry...I have as first cousins as well. I believe that perhaps Charles B. son of Luke may be the one that you have as died in 1819... Served in the War of 1812... Because I can not find him anywhere. ONE: I think the Littleberry of abt 1744 that married Christian and disappears is the son of William of 1702 and Elizabeth (Witt??????). I have found one reference listing his wife as "Catherine Light" Moses Moore born about 1775 I can only find as the son of Littleberry and Mary Light. The Stepchild is software issue I can't seem to get right. Two The Littleberry that marries Phebe Tharp and goes to Franklin County, Alabama, I have as the son of Littleberry who married Mary Light but dies is Wilson County, Tennessee on or about 1848. Charles B. and Charles B. are first cousin. What I have is below except for some war service notes. Rial I have placed with Moore and Jane Powell Matlock. This would make Moore 50 when Rial is born. I feel so stymied trying to figure out just Richard's line yet, here you all are, working all the lines at the same time! Let me take a moment to thank you all for all the rest of us (and remember, Richard was supposedly at King's Mt. <G>) - I wonder if he named his son Charles after this "somehow" cousin..... I followed the two Mattox links on the DNA page but the information was slim. I could not match any of the mem listed as being in the Carolinas or Tennessee with any of the know Matlock's in the area. Until I found the note on King's Mountain. I remembered then that I had found a short article on the battle there and the spelling of the list of participates which I include below. Can anyone identify any of the men below? Thanks Terry... Joe Matlock Descendants of John Matlock Generation No. 1 1. JOHN7 MATLOCK was born in Virginia. Notes for JOHN MATLOCK: "The claim of John's action at Kings Mountain with a force of Tennessee Militia under the leadership of John Seiver was previously not known to me and is best explained by the following from a report of chronology records received from Marie Matlock Harris 5 April 1994. This report is currently published on the family website. Ms Harris reports "John MADDOX [Before we say for sure this isn't one of our MEDLOCK --I have to tell you that John MATLOCK that died on King Mt. .... the scribe of who ever wrote his name, used the MATTOX spelling .. witting it --- MATL (crossing the T & L) MATTLO->then turning the C to form the back of the K == forming an X = MATLOCK = MATTOX. I probably would not have seen what they had done; except, for the word Buckskins --- I will never know why I ordered this mans will - on which I have to tell you; his brother spelled MATLOCK 7 so was his wife's name Rachel MATLOCK & his brother Charles MATLOCK - the word BUXSKINS - used the same form of writing, the "C" to form the back of the letter "K", thus BUCKSKINS = became BUXSKINS. This John MATTOC, is the John killed in the Kings Mt. Battle. He had 2 brothers - Charles and Edward. " The birth dates of his children would make him a very old man at the time of the battle and this claim continues to need work." SOUTH CAROLINA Submitted by Terry Gladfelter Mattox, Charles Mattox, Charles, Lieutenant Mattox, John, Captain (k) Camden Co., 1783 [SC Jury Lists, 1718-1783, p.84; Mary Warren; Heritage Papers]Benjamin Mattocks. COMMANDERS AT KINGS MOUNTAIN, by J. D. Bailey p. 191"CAPTAIN JOHN MATTOCKS" "He was another South Fork boy who was killed when the enemy made their bayonet charge down the hill, first firing off their guns. The only account we have of previous services rendered by Mattocks is that given by Major Thomas Young, when he helped to avenge the death of a young Captain Reid, who was treacherously murdered by two Tories---Love and Saddler. Says Young: 'We started, rode all night, halted in the day, kept watch in the woods, but slept not; the next night we arrived at old Love's. The house was attacked, and the door broken down by a powerful man by the name of Maddox, who was afterwards killed at King's Mountain. In staving open the door, he floored old Love and knocked some of his teeth out.' Young spells the name Maddox, instead of Mattocks, but the same person is referred to.''Captain Mattocks had a brother, Charles, who participated in the battle with him, and interceded for a Tory brother, Edward, who was severely wounded there, and cured of his Toryism. The family removed to Georgia after the war.""William Rabb and John Boyd" "These two privates were also killed in the early part of action, and they, with Major Chronicle and Captain Mattocks, are buried in one grave at the branch which is marked by the old monument. This monument was erected by Dr. William McLean of Lincoln county, at his expense, in 1815, and bears the following inscriptions: On the north side: 'Sacred to the memory of Major William Chronicle, Captain John Mattocks, William Rabb and John Boyd, who were killed at this place on the 7th of October, 1780, fighting in defense of America.'
