Hi Joe, I have always thought Hescott was the son of William of 1702.. and I believe that Hescott and Samuel are father and son... Its really hard to say exactly when Samuel was born in 1800 as Im sure you know, it shows that he was 45 and over.. which places him born at least by 1765... Now if Im right, on what I have down for Samuel.. he was old enough to have recieved pay for Reg Militia Protecting Public Peace.. in 1766 Assuming that hes atleast 21 at that time...this would place Samuel born abt 1744... So the 1740, isnt that far off... The problem for me is trying to figure out who Hescott belongs to.. If Samuel was born bet 1740-44 Hescott was surely born 1719-1723... The frist mention of a possible Hescott was Escott in Albemarle Co VA 1748... if atleast age 21ish in 1748 this would state he was born 1727ish which again the 1719-1723 falls in that range... So alls well so far... Now.. IF Hescott was born 1723... He very well could of been the first born son of William of 02, which I all along thought he was a son of anyways...its others who have put his the son of Nicholas.. and since they were in Granville Co at the same time I thought ok I will go with the flow of it... When your DNA comes in and when the matching up is done, I may move Hescott as a son of William of 02 as I always thought he was a son of anways.. If I do move him ... I will let you know.. Oh and another thing.. A researcher who lives in VA did some research years ago and while looking at this Escott/Hescott.. I guess way back when there was a Family Group with the Surname as Escott/Hescott which makes one wonders if perhaps William of 02 first wife was a Escott... Might be worth while looking into that.. Brenda
I agree he could well be a son of William. Good morning Brenda To state the obvious... we do not yet have enough statistical evidence make many judgements other than for the current individual and then perhaps draw some very general conclusions. Charles, Sam, Robert, Albert, Leonard and I are related. This relationship is to John Matlock the emigrate born 1638 and had at least two wives not the this would matter as the DNA is of male decent. Alton comes next closest but further back explaining the 5 distance. George of 1606 has sons who have dropped off the face of the earth any of whom may be the link. John Marion and Edgar are not of this line of decent. There are several explanations none of which are sustainable with the current evidence. One, there are other emigrates for whom we have not accounted. This may be an area of increasing search as the Matlick results come in and as none of the Matlack families have submitted a sample. ( Are John and William brothers or just good friends?) Two, The name game. Matlock, Medlock, Mattock...who knows in the 1700's which is which. Who are those Matlocks or Mattocks were at Kings Mountain? I think John "Matlock" was the emigrate. Three, Adoption. A child is taken in, given the name and no one thinks any more of it. But the DNA marker would reflect the real father's marker and not the adopted father. This child could never be a genetic link to any of the families but is our kin as if born to it. Four Father Unknown. Rape, seduction, or just moonlight, magnolias and hormones. Daughter has child. Child takes the mother's name and is raised in the family by a grandfather or uncle. In two or three generations nobody knows or remembers, but the father's side of the DNA will never match Hescott Matlock is most likely the child of Nicholas Matlock who married Mary Jane Shelton. John Matlock of 1683 did have other sons who's families are unknown. As the number of participants in the DNA testing increases many of these issues will resolve themselves. Any word on the Matlick results yet?? Joe Matlock >>> <BA044@aol.com> 6/9/2004 12:09:59 PM >>> Ok I have added the info on the new member... I am surprised that it wasnt an exact match to Sam and Joe... and that the markers are so far off... this Scott and Alton seem to match the closest yet not close enough.... Joe what do you think? Is it possible that your Luke, and Sams ancester doesnt belong to Moore? Or does LB and Mary Light.. and or LB and Pheobe not belong to Moore and this group? Brenda Genetic Distance Analysis: kit #20595 Scott Matlock Kit# Name Distance19782 Alton Glen Matlock 514104 Charles G Matlock 612569 Samuel Willis Medlock 713801 Robert Lee Medlock 714350 Albert Ronell Medlock 714482 Joe W Matlock 714380 Leonard Medlock 818634 John Marion Medlock 1718809 Edgar Lee Matlock 18 Now this Scott is coming from John H Matlock Now this John is said son of Littleberry and Pheobe Tharp.. Littleberry being the said son of Littleberry and Mary Light Matlock.. Littleberry being the brother to Joes Luke and sons of Moore.. So with the Matches being off so far, Where is the mistake at in this tree? is John not the son of Littleberry? I have questioned before, IS this John the son of Charles and not LB? Thing of the Charles, being his father wouldnt really work either for he is said son of Littleberry and Pheobe as well,.... DNA info shows: 5Not Related7/12 - You are not related and the odds greatly favor that you have not shared a common male ancestor with this person within thousands of years.

Hi Curt, I didn't know anything about the Bible. Also I would like to add to those of you that I was going to do some research for here in Charleston, SC on the MATLOCK's, I haven't been able too as my husband has been in ICU for over a month now in a diabete coma. He went in on our 25 Anniversary :-( I have no idea when I will take the time away from the hosp long enough to do anymore family research. I do however check my email every few days. Been fighting with the VA hosp to have him moved to another hosp where our family doc works out of. Wish me luck on that one. I just sent out a email and letter to our Gov about my feelings of this VA hosp and how they are not allowing me to move him. Sandy who's heart is in NJ but lives in SC

What's IN A MIDDLE NAME Edward "LANE" MATLOCK Edward "LANE MATLOCK, supposedly named for his mothers father, Judge Edward LANE, according to Marie Matlock HARRIS. Marie also connects him to Moore and Jane MATLOCK's son, John Creswell MATLOCK . Edward brought his family to Oregon in 1853 coming across the center of the State to the little Village of Pleasant Hill. He eventually went on west past Eugene to Goshen, OR. and raised horses. His middle name "LANE" caught my attention years ago ... Could it have any connection to our Jemima LANE 2nd wife of John ELLIS, SR. parents of Ezekiel ELLIS who married Ann MATLOCK, dau. of Zachariah MAT- LOCK and Edith PAINE. Ezekiel and Ann were the parents of Elizabeth ELLIS who married Lewis RINEHART (my basic genealogical family tree for research) Lewis and Elizabeth RINEHART, starting out from Buffalo Ridge, TN., now known as Gray, Tn., went first to Morgan Co. IL. for 7 years, then on to Oskaloosa, IA. for 3 or 4 years, before moving on to Oregon in 1854 ... they settle South of Eugene. My burning question ... where and why the middle name of "LANE"? Joe in TN. suggests it may have been given to honor the LANE's who fought along side the MAT- LOCK's in the Battle of Kings Mountain. Have you noticed this battle is looming ever more import- ant on the history pages of the MATLOCK family. Some historians claim it was the turning point in the Civil War. THE TALE of TWO YOUNG WOMEN First that of Jemima Lane ELLIS L. WILKINS, a Rinehart, has traced the LANE genealogy back 20 or more gene- rations. Jemima's family: 1. Richard LANE = Sarah FULLER 1.1. John Fuller LANE = Elizabeth CLOUD 1.1.1. Jemima LANE = ( as his 2nd w.) John ELLIS, Sr. They had: Ezekiel ELLIS who m. Ann MATLOCK dau of: Zachariah MATLOCK = Edith PAINE s/o Moore MATLOCK = Jane POWELL Melba WOOD says Moore was the un- proven son of John MATLOCK = Hestor WATSON. I notice (today) he is being placed as the son of William MATLOCK, any proof yet? The second young "LANE" lady was sent in by Joe MATLOCK of TN. 1. Richard LANE = Sarah FULLER 1.2. Tidence LANE = Ester Hester BIBBLE 1.2.2. Aquila LANE = Agnes FITZGERALD (Aquila fought in the battle of Kings Mt.) 1.2.2.2. William LANE = Abigail Hewes THOMAS 1.2.2.2.2. James Tidence LANE = Quintana MOSS 1.2.2.2.2.2. Julia Moss LANE = George Washington MATLOCK [s/o 1.1.2.4.4. in the MATLOCK Journal see Shawn MATLOCKs web-site] 1.1.2.4.4. Henry MATLOCK = Nancy RICE 1.1.2.4. Abish MATLOCK = Sarah McPHERSON 1.1.2. John Moore MATLOCK = Ann SOUTH 1.1. John MATLOCK = Hestor WATSON Recently more and more Matlock's are showing up with "LANE for a middle name I wish to thank all those who have helped make the connection between the MAT- LOCK's, the ELLIS's and LANE families. Hi All, This morning I checked again the South Carolina 1800 Census. I found the following. Matlock John house 269 Greenville county one male 45 and older (this has to be John Sr), one female under 10,one female 16 to 26 and one female 26 to 45 (this would be John's wife). Matlok Nathaniel House 270 Greenville, 2 males under 10,1 male 10-16, 2 males 16 to 26, and one male 45 or older. Medlock Catharine 271 Greenville (this is the wife of John Jr) 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 female under 10, 1 Female 10-16 and 1 female 45 or older. Notice house 269, 270 and 271. We know that John and John Jr lived on Mountain creek so the other person (Nathaniel) almost had to be kin to them, also he is appears to be about the same age as John so he could be the brother of John.
