    1. Re: [MATLOCK-L] Jemma/Jemima Luke Matlock
    2. Janet: My sincerest sympathies on the loss of your mother. I well remember your trek to CA from Va via NC archives. I am sure your mother was proud of her daughter and grateful for the help I am sure you provided. Genealogy is wonderful in many regards and a great way to escape the problems of every day. You, your family and your mother are in my prayers. Yes, you are correct...George d. 1800 was the brother of Col Charles Medlock who was the father of Keziah who married Silas Haley and produced your William Haley, however the current theory is indeed it was a George who was father of both George d. 1800 and Col Charles Medlock d. 1797 in Ga. Followed you on your many family pursuits and find you a good researcher, keep it up for yourself and those that follow. Again, I am sure your mother would be proud of you. Best regards, Mary Jean

    1. Cropwell Bishop Records
    2. Joe I agree with you on Thomas.. The burial record for Thomas, 18 June 1656, states he was the son of George. There are three burial records for George Matlock. I question which George each of these were. To review. April 1573 George Matlock baptized. 27 April 1606 George son of John baptized. 7 November 1636 George Matlocke married Jane Hall. This would be 1606 George. Between 1638 and 1646 George, son of George and Jane baptized. 26 March 1675 George son of George and Ann baptized. So, if we have three burial records for George and four baptismal records for George, which George could have been buried when? George Matlock, buried 15 November 1658 could be 1573 George or 1606 George. 1573 George based on age and 1606 George because he had no known children after Thomas in 1656. George Matlocke, buried June 1683 could be any of the last three. 1573 George would have been 110 years old. George Matchlock buried 23 October 1707 could be George baptized between 1638 and 1646 or his son George, baptized 1675. This time 1606 George looks to be to old, 101. If George and Jane came to America after their son George was baptized in 1675, either they left their son in England, not likely, or there is another George who was buried in 1707. The George most likely unaccounted for in the burial records is the son of George and Ann. If a George Matlock came to America from Cropwell Bishop, he is the most likely candidate. That would make him the nephew of John and William. I hope all these George’s didn’t confuse you as much as they did me. I would like to see your take on the Cropwell Bishop records. Curt Miller .

Who also moved into the neighborhood with their gang of cousins, with aunt Charity Matlock the matriarch. The Brewers, the Choates and the Simmons came directly from Robertson/Davidson Co. area I believe. The Matlocks, Sooters and Birds came from Carroll Co. TN. William R. Sooter is in the 1850 Carroll Co. Census I have just a few excerpts from Carroll Co. Court Records which I have inserted below. Note: Benjamin Medlocke with Sooters, Birds, Stones. The Stones and Covingtons were also from Richmond Co. NC, via Robertson Co. 1. John to New Kent Co
    2. Joe, I am thinking that perhaps Thomas brother of William and John... (sons of George of 1606) Might be the Thomas who was named in the Saint Peters Church of New Kent Co Parish Register listed on page 21 as : William Son of Thomas Matlocke baptized 10 Oct 1689 This would place brothers Thomas and John in that area at the same time, for John was mentioned as "Medlook" being there in Feb of 1689... What ever happened to that Thomas or William, I have no clue...Brenda

    3. Yes, is Henry the first of his family to arrive here? don't know.. We know of, and can at least find evidence of, two of George of 1606 four sons moving to the then Colonies. William Matlack to the New Jersey area and the family mostly moving to the Pennsylvania area and John Matlock to Virginia and then to the west and south. George's other two sons Thomas and George have to my knowledge have not been found, traced or published. Are you in contact with any of Henry's male decedents who have the surname? We would like to have then join our DNA group. If they match the known decedents of George of 1606 then some of your mystery goes away. Joe Matlock >>> <Thomasquatro@aol.com> 7/15/2004 8:14:26 PM >>> Joe, New arrival meaning just arriving in the states? I am not sure. It is interesting about Henry's siblings. I had not found that info before. I will check Loretta's website again. Funny thing is that I thought I had heard the story about three brothers coming from England and the three then splitting up ending up in different areas if the country. Thanks for responding. What names are you looking for? I would be glad to forward if I run upon something. If you do finally find soemthing on Henry I would love to know. Thanks again. Michelle If I can be of any help

    2. Taking the 1790 and 1820 Census.. Which I realize theres several years missing census wise, to actually say who all were the children of Luke... But so far this is what I am showing... and after Edward M there appears to have been a Male born 1805-1810... I have no name for him... Perhaps Jemima married that son.. What ever happened to that son, who knows.. Just up and left, died, whatever..Is one theory I have thought about.. another is.. Since she named a son E. D., I wondered if Edward was her husband. He left Tenn and went to Texas.. Stayed single the best I can tell.. Anyway.. I like Wanda, dont think she was married to Luke Jr.. Maybe Luke Sr? Know why of Knowing with out a marriage record. 3. If Jemima is Luke's wife why isn't she with him in 1850 and 1860. Instead on 1850 she is living with an18 year old sons E. D. and Absolom. And by 1860 she is living in household with her sister Anna who also has Luke Sr. living in same household. 1850 TN, Dickson Co, Di-337-223 Jemima Matlock 40,TN E D 18,m,w,TN, Absalom 4,m,w,TN 1860 MO, Barry Co, Shoal Creek Twp, pg 901 Living with her sister or sister-in-law; Wm. Luke has as wife Eleanor and oldest son is John age 19 and several children. It is clear to me that Luke Jr married to Eleanor/Ellen and is with her in 1850 and 1860. Jemima is clearly related to Luke Sr. in some way. Either daughter with illigimate children. Or, perhaps ex-wife of Edward who lists he is single for many census. 1850 TN, Humphreys Co, pg 099 Luke Matlock, 44,m,w,farmer,TN Eleanor, 43,f,w,TN John, 19,m,w, TN William, 15,m,w,TN Ellyann, 13,f,w,TN Edward, 9,m,w,TN Elizabeth, 4,f,w,TN Thomas, 1,m,w, TN Luke Matlock, 84,m,w,SC 1860 TN, Humphreys Co, Dist #10, pg 100 Luke Matlock, 50,m,w,farmer,TN Ellen, 48,f,w,TN Ned, 19,m,w,TN Elizabeth, 15,f,w,TN Thomas, 12,m,w,TN Martha, 10,f,w,TN I do not think that Luke Jr's wife is Eleanor 'Ellen' Jemima Choate. Our family came to the east coast of the United States with a great deal of German ancestry but I can not figure out the Matlocks. They came to Hancock County Indiana sometime in the late 19th century I am guessing. I notice that a few groups of Matlocks went to the US south. Any info on those who went north and into Indiana. I would love to know. 3. Good Morning Vickie Sorry for the delay George is my 2nd cousin 4 times removed I made the Boley Boxley Change. I have found lots of Matlocks of different families born in Texas...but I did find George Thomas Matlock b. 1882 Garland county Arkansas and his son Clarence C. Matlock1918 born in Ruff Oklahoma. >>> "vickie clarke" <vacs@hotmail.com> 7/7/2004 4:37:55 PM >>> Joe, Thanks for the information. I have a hard time with some of the information that you sent. I realize Census takers made mistakes all of the time but some of this has me completely baffled. I do not find any records of our Matlock's in Hopkins, Smith, Midland, VanZandt Counties in TX for 1870 or 1880. I know several people have sent you information on where the Matlock's were born in TX and married in TX but they do not show up on any of the Census there that I could find. Be interested in seeing some of the information if you could get it. I wanted to clear up one of the things you sent about Boley Matlock. He is not George Boxley Boley Matlock. Boley had a brother named George Boxley Matlock so these are two separate people. The spelling for Boley's name is listed differently on all kinds of things but it does not change to a George. Boley's middle initial has not appeared on any document except his military papers. Here he is listed as Bolar M. Matlock. George is 7 years older than Boley. Whose line do you belong to or how do you fit in?? I found a few more census to add to what I have and thought I would share them with you: ===1900 Garland Co., AR===Mazarn Twp., ED 31, 18 & 19 June, Pg 175 (pg 23), HH#193-193:Rowe, William P. I just received this email from "Vicky". She is a descendant of Boley M. and Emiline Easley Matlock. I don't have much on her line. She already has the information that I have. Therefore I can't help her much. Can you help her? Carlyon Sue McKinney----- Original Message ----- From: vickie clarke To: carlyon.sue.mckinney@worldnet.att.net Sent: Monday, June 14, 2004 1:20 PM Subject: RE: Welcome to "The Matlock Family" MSN Group Website! Hi Carlyon Sue, Thank you for your welcome. My name is Vickie and I am a descendant of Boley M. and Emeline Easley Matlock. I did not leave a message as I was having trouble with the site tonight. It is possible it was my DSL that was contributing to the problem. I need a ton of help. I do not have pictures of any of the Matlock's and I do not have any stories. I do have the Civil War Records from AR for Boley and a copy of his Land Patent. My line is through Boley and Emeline's daughter Laura Matlock Cash and this is a living nightmare for me to try and find family members. My parent's were divorced when I was young so I did not have much contact with my father's side of the family. My grandmother was one of Laura's children. From what I understand the kids were very young when her parents died. Her mother died when she was born or when she was 1 yr old. (All records of my grandmother are in conflict with the correct year of birth.) Her father died when she was 4 or 5 so she became an orphan at that time. This is the fun part: I have information from various places that John and Laura had anywhere from 3 to 7 children. I can only prove 3 of them so far. I have attached what I do have for you to see. I am sure there are things that need to be corrected. Thank you for your time.
