Several times I have seen a Matlock referred to as "Duke". I just received some information that indicates he is part of the line I am researching but my source only referred to him as Duke. Can someone tell me who he is and what his actual given name was. Thank you.
I just pulled out a copy of an old land warrant I've had for a while and thought I'd send the info. to the list to see if anyone has connections with the following: Oct 24, 1815: Burke Co. (now Alexander Co.) Warrant 186283; Grant #3705 Surveyed Sep 24, 1814 for Joseph Holsclaw - 100 acres - west side of Middle Littler River next to the following:Barnett Paine (one of my other ancestral lines);adjoinging lands of William Fullerton and NICHOLAS MEDLOCK. The Surveyors: Stephen Medlock (my 3greatgrandfather) and Isaac Gilbert. So, does anyone know who this Nicholas belongs to? I know there was a Nicholas in Caswell Co. but is this the same one? If so, what is his relationship to my Stephen (Sr. by the way) also there was a John Medlock there at the same time - believe by me - to be Stephen Sr.'s father. Were John & Nicholas Sr. brothers? Gale Payne Nagy
Here's my names with the #'s. #113122--Sterling Burnett Matlock Sr married Mary Baker-----#11312--James Matlock married Martha "Patsy" Gunn-------#1131--Nicholas Matlock married Elizabeth Terrill-----#113--John Matlock III married Ann (?)----#11--John Matlock Jr married Hester Watson--------#1--John Matlock Sr ........ Hi, I've already been to the Matlock home page. I agree with Winnie Bailey. The website helped me find more leads & info on my greatx4 grandpa Sterling Burnett MATLOCK Sr. I verrified the info I found in Randolph Co MO records. I reccomend it. I would like to thank Sean Matlock, Brenda A., & Marie Matlock Harris for all their time & effort they put into it. I'm grateful someone has shared all the valuable info that Jess Armstrong Nettles gathered. I'd like to list my names once again with the numbers from Melba Duckles Wood's book, My Ancestory:
1.Do any of you have a John or Thomas Matlock that you dont know who their parents are? My Isaac Matlock had sons John b 1825 and Thomas B Matlock born 1831. Both were born in Tenn. and in 1840 they were last know with Isaac in Jackson Co Ala. In 1850 Isaac was in Johnson Co Ark with neither John or Thomas near by. A Thomas B Matlock does show up in Johnson Co in 1860 which I Think is Isaacs son. But as for John, I dont know what happened to him. 2. Isaac Matlocks wife Jane. If ever working in Ark,Ok or Tx and you run across a Jane Matlock in 1870 abt 50ish and dont know who she belongs to, let me know, she might be mine. James G Matlock abt 13 should be with her. ( Theres a chance that the James Matlock age 13 living with a Sims family might be my James) It seems as if after the Civil War my Matlock family had been scattered and separated badly. What I wouldnt give to hear what Stories Jane could tell of that time period!) Last know in 1860 Jane was with her daughter and son-in-law in Carroll Co Ark and in 1880 Jane was in Washington Co Ark. A James Matlock, Janes son maybe with her. James was with his mother in 60 and 80. Also I havent been able to find Jane in 1900. I do Know that Jane was in Johnson Co Ark in 1903 where she died. To help clear up the confusion of the many James Madison Matlocks I submit the following. Taken from The Matlocks of Tennessee - Especially Franklin County By Dr. John W. L. Matlock (dec) This book can be found in the Franklin County,TN Library and The Public Library of Nashville & Davidson County. It does not follow any of the Matlocks after they leave Franklin County. I have omitted some of the line of Matlocks to get to the James Madison Matlocks in my direct line. James Matlock b 1737, d 1812 married Lucinda Madison in 1756. Moved to NC in 1760. Had children: 1. Richard Matlock b 1761 D. ? Married Mary Waddell 1784 Had children: George (went to Indiana), Samuel, John, Mary, Daniel, and Lucinda 2. William Matlock b. VA 1757 d. TN 1816 Married (1) Anne Carter Daughter of Col John Carter at Watauge in 1783. By Anne Carter he had the following children: 1. William MatlockJr., April 11, 1795, d Dec. 20, 1844, Married Sarah. Had children: Lucinda, Martha, John Jackson, Sarah Ann, Ruth Lane, Charles LaFayette, and Nancy. William moved to McMinn County, TN. Near Athens 2. Henry Matlock, b 1797, d ? - Married Nancy Jane. Had children: Henry, Jr., Sarah, Martha, Elizabeth, and Nancy Jane. Henry also moved to McMinn County, TN. Near Athens. 3. James Madison Matlock b. 1799 d. 1870 Married Elizabeth Ann Houston b. 1800 youngest sister of San Houston. Had children: James Madison Matlock, Jr. b. 1818, d. 1888; William Houston Matlock, b. Jan. 14, 1819, d. July 7, 1878; Elizabeth Ann Matlock b. 1822, d. ?; and Julian Jefferson Matlock b. 1822, d. 1863 in Civil War. All three of the boys went to DeSoto County, MS, the late 1830s or early 1940s. James Madison Matlock, Jr stayed there. James Madison Matlock, Jr. married Mary Jane Dyer of Franklin County on May 8, 1839. Children unknown. William Houston Matlock married Lucy Elizabeth Moore (1824 - 1904) on Jan. 30, 1840. Lucy was the daughter of Dyer Moore and granddaughter of Col. James Lewis. Had children: William Dyer Matlock b. Nov. 8, 1840, d. 1910; James Lewis Matlock, b May 19, 1843, d Jan. 5, 1844; Mary Elizabeth Matlock, b. Nov. 20, 1844, d Feb. 14, 1869; Leah Jane Matlock, b 1846, d ?; John Jefferson Matlock, b April 2, 1847, d January 8, 1848; Henry Hamilton Matlock b. Jan. 1, 1849, d June 18, 1923; Ann Elizabeth Matlock, b. Nov. 30, 1851, d. Jan. 24, 1936, Robert Lewis Matlock, b. May 3, 1854, d. Aug. 19, 1875; Ella Moore Matlock, b. Sept. 7, 1857, d. Nov. 19, 1901.; Lucy Moore Matlock, b. Dec. 21, 1860, d. May 7, 1869Charles Morgan Matlock, b. June 2, 1862, d. 1937; and Jefferson Carter Moore Matlock, b. Dec. 3, 1864, d. Sept. 18, 1865. Of couse most of the above also married and had children. Again, my intent is to identify one of the James Madison Matlocks in DeSoto County MS. In the 1840s. The Circuit Court Record of DeSoto County for 1845-1847 on page 29 notes that one James M. Matlock is appointed administrator to the estate of one James M. Matlock. Pg. 24 a William Bailey applied for guardian of John H. and Charles N. Matlock, minor children of James M. Matlock, (d Jan. 9, 1844). Pg. 31 Thomas Matlock also a minor heir of James Matlock. As noted above, James Madison Matlock, Jr. children are unknown. Could he have also named one James Madison Matlock?
"This is where we come in, our job is to pick up the trail and bring all of the pieces and our family together. " Shawn Z. Matlocks Says his "posted online material was not sent by God so that means there is probably more than one errrror" Dear Shawn , The above Statements are more than true.. We all must take what we run across as references and then do further digging to prove or not what is said. After 20 yrs of digging I have learned that for One, you cant believe EVERYTHING that family memeber say as example, my Grandmother will tell you that her Grandfather Marshall Hedge was born in Ky or England. Well The Hedge family wasnt, they were from Tenn.. But the key word sent me to Ky where I found for a short time The Hedge Family had Lived there and that info is what sent me to Tenn. If and when They came from England, I have no idea. My last Hedge member ive traced was born abt 1790 Ms.and at time He said Ga. Two The Census themselves are not a hundred percent correct... At time ages of a person didnt increase every ten years.. like they should of , Birthplaces at times are wrong..I guess perhaps when the census taker showed up at ones house, he taked to who ever was there, and that info was what he wrote down. If Jane Doe daughter of John Doe was the only one old enough at home to answere the questions and wasnt really sure where John was born I suppose since she was born in Ky she just decided that so was her Daddy... # 3 The info that I sent in yesterday, Even tho it came out of a History book, I have learned that not Always are they a 100% correct either. From a Book I learned that Thomas Stanton and Diana Field were the parents of my William Stanton And I worked Thomas for a long time .. Until I sound out from Court records, Wills etc. that I after the Wrong Husband.. Diana Field didnt marry Thomas Stanton she was married to his brother William.. So regardless where and who the info comes from there will and can be mistakes, and Shawn .. We are not doubting your work .. But are thankful that youve taken the time to create the site for its a great start placing for ones adventures.. Brenda
Thanks Brenda..I had a time trying to read that book, so it was most helpful of you to print out the text. It was nice of that individual to send it ---- think if Mrs Armstrong had had this internet to deal with, she might have thrown up her hands and not published anything, and without this site we all could not have found it. Your read on the data looks good to me. MJ
Greetings Family, I have been following this list and trying to keep up with what is going on. Sadly my job has me working 72 - 84 hours a week and I do not have the much needed time to work on all of the data I have or make corrections or edit or verify or pretty much anything for that matter. I will most likely work this schedule for the remainder of the year (I hope not). Once I get back to a normal routine I will plundge wholeheartedly into my colletion of papers. I have seen one or two doubt my posted data, this is good since I have a huge disclaimer saying I could be wrong and have openly challenged all to prove me a liar. My posted online material was not sent by God so that means there is probably more than one errrror and judging by the number of emails sending updates I am for sure missing some important data. Jess Nettles Armstrong the auther of " They Multiplied " passed away several years after publishing her work. Had her health not worsened she would have had at least one more update to her work published. Towards the end she was given new info that challenged her own work but was not able to do anything with it. This is where we come in, our job is to pick up the trail and bring all of the pieces and our family together. So shall we doubt each other or shall we pretend we are all from Missouri ? Sorry to rant but Mrs. Armstrong was a sweet lady who spent big bucks slowly gathering data from around the country and some from overseas. She did document her work and has copies of all kinds of info. After reading her work i get the sense she was part bloodhound and part Inspector Columbo. Also the work I posted by Robert Nelson is heavily documented. Once I find a program that will put the data online alond with the documentation notes and runs fast and does not take up a lot of room and Bob quits triple checking his work it will be uploaded If you have any data relevant to Bobs work please email it to him or if it is too large postal mail it to me and I can forward it to him. His email address is [email protected] My mailing address is below and can be found on my websites. Respectfully, Shawn Z. For those of you interested in the Matlocks of Franklin Co Tenn. I need to clear up a Mistake. Encyclopedia of Matlocks WILLIAM HENRY MATLOCK, b Jan 14. 1819 Franklin County Tennessee. WILLIAM HENRY, (one record shows Houston) b. son of William and Mary Elizabeth Matlock. Married Lucy E, Moore in Franklin Co., Tn. His parents went to Miss. early but he is shown in Franklin Co., Tn. 1850, 1860, etc. One child was born in Miss., the others in Tn. Their children: William Dyer, James Lewis, Mary Elizabeth (b. Miss.), John Jefferson, Henry Hamilton, Robert Lewis, Ella, Lucy Moore, Charles Morgan, Jefferson Carter and Ann Elizabeth The information above is wrong. It says that WILLIAM and wife MARY ELIZA MATLOCK, Shown in 1830 Franklin Co., Tn. Went to Miss. early. William died before 1840. They had children: James Madison, John D., Sarah, William H., Letha Jane, Thomas J., Andrew J., Charles H. and Mary A. And although William and Mary did have son William H, the above William H and info is not the son but Grandson.. A Page out of book was sent to me, it is on William Houston Matlock. It doesnt show the name of the book, but it appears to be Franklin Co Biographies, or such. It says: William Houston Matlock b Jan 14 1819 Tn to James Madison Matlock and Elizabeth Ann Houston ( sister of Sam Houston) He married Lucy Elizabeth Moore Jan 30 1840 in Franklin Co. She was born Jan 18 1824 to Dryer P Moore and Mary Elizabeth Brenham Lewis ( Daughter of Franklin Co Pioneers, James Lewis and Lucy Thomas) William H Matlock died Julu 7 1878 Franklin Co . ( The article goes on to talk a little bit more about William H .Then names some of his kids.) William and Lucy were the parents of 12 children: William Dryer Matlock b 1840 spouse Clemitine Thorn of Ms was in the Civil War and later moved to Ala., James Lewis Matlock b May 19 1843 died Jan 5 1844, Mary Elizabeth (1844-1869) Spouse Capt. Henry Weaver of Franklin Co . Lela Jane Matlock b 1846 Married G R Scivally March 1 1866 , John Jefferson Matlock 1847-1848 . Henry Hamilton Matlock B 1849 Married Sarah Catherine Baker That is all of the children that were named in the book. This is how one researcher who has been working this line for awhile has it: William Matlock b 1757 VA died Tn 1816 had 3 sons. William Jr, Henry, and James Madison Matlock James Madison Madison b 1799 died 1870 had 3 sons: James Madison JR (this James moved to MS) William Houston, and Julian Jefferson. So I am wondering if this is the order Jess Armstorng ment for it to be: IS THIS WILLIAM JR? WILLIAM and wife MARY ELIZA MATLOCK, Shown in 1830 Franklin Co., Tn. Went to Miss. early. William died before 1840. They had children: James Madison, John D., Sarah, William H., Letha Jane, Thomas J., Andrew J., Charles H. and Mary A. WAS CHARLES H MATLOCK, HENRY? CHARLES H., born June 11, 1814, in Tn. He married Mary Mildred Stephens on Dec. 22, 1836. Mary was born in Va. in 1817. In 1840, they were in Madison Co., Ms. Mary Matlock died on Dec. 19, 1872, and Charles died on Nov. 9, 1881. Their children were William born in 1840, James born in 1841, Franklin born in 1843, Thomas born in 1844, Robert born in 1845, Nancy born in 1846, Harriett born in 1848, and Lazarus born in 1849. AND IS THIS JAMES MADISON JR? JAMES M MATLOCK, b. 22 May 1811, Franklin County Tennessee; d. 1847. JAMES M., born 22 May 1811 in Tennessee, son of William and Mary E. Matlock. Married 1835 in Franklin Co., Tn. Mary Helena Gray, daughter of George Gray.. They had the following children: George Gray, born 1836 in DeSota Co., Miss.; Mary Eliza, 1838, James William, 1840; Isaac Gray, 1844; Lucy, 1839. (Mrs. J. W. Treadwell is a descendant of this James M. and she and her husband have done much research on this.family). James M. died ca 1847 I am confused.. But I hope this helps some of you.. Brenda
Hello my late Mother was a Matlock from Ky. Two years ago I visited some of the family that still live in Barbourville Ky. I know that they are family but, But I think my grandfather had a number or brothers and it is looking as if they all had Charles and John's. They took me to the grave yards around town. Many military stones and no dates .Charles (b1866 d 1928) married (m. 1893) Martha Jane Runion. (b1875 d1958) His father was William Wesley Matlock, Mother Susan Katherine Cox. Martha father was William Ruffis Runion Mother Racheal Cox. They lived for a time in Barbourville and then my grandmother lived in the Lafollette Tn. area until her death. Charles Matlock had brothers and sister Bailey, Kelly, Lucy Nelson unknown others his father was married or not a number of time. If any one has any help I thank you so much.
Mary Jean Thank you for including me in your response and for sharing your information on the Col. While not in my direct family line I have found him an interesting case study. Your suspicion of materials found on websites, especially the commercial ones maybe often justified (even with the disclaimers to cross check the info) but that should not preclude the use of the web for research. The people monitoring this list and who put together the Matlock family website have done us all a large favor by providing a central clearing house for family information, for the elimination of incorrect information by allowing an open forum for discussion, debate and comparison of sources; and for the publication of those primary sources. (The existence of two Charles Medlock's one in North and another in South Carolina is a prime example) The section on wills and deeds is particulary useful. There was also an expedition against the Indians in Tennessee led by the Seviers shortly before or just after the start of the revolution. Several members of the family were also along on this one. Again thank you Best Regrds Joe Matlock >>> <[email protected]> 07/26/00 08:37AM >>> Dear Brenda: Thanks for your response, still curious about that Matlock site information I put out in May. Am getting a bit leary about this site, had hoped it would give me some relative to work with, but at least you care enough to try and help. The only problem with this type of work is without sources nothing can really be checked and false information just takes time out of someone's life while they run down a false lead...its given this worthwhile research a really bad image..and the information we get on the net as worth nothing. Will eventually close down the sites I am afraid. At any rate...those are my thoughts. The National Genealogy Society can give you more details on my comments...their mission is a valid one. So here goes on your info and again thanks for your help. He was elected to the Commons House of Assembly in N. C. on Sept. 9, 1775. His children were Israel, George, Ann Jordan, Agatha Haley, and Henry. Charles died in Warren Co., Ga. in 1796. This looks like the Armstrong info( if not then whose?) and as usual no source...I have misgivings regarding that Gen. This was put on the net by Dot Tribble...a really good reseacher and its from a book entitled "Sketch of Col. Joseph Woodruff, Revolutionary Soldier, Of Boro Neck, McIntosh County, Ga" by Dr. Caldwell Woodruff. Dot sent me a letter written by Montgomery to the daughter of the Agatha Medlock listed above. The letter was printed in Woodruff book (Library of Congress) and identifies the familyconnection between the George and Charles Medlock of Warren Co and the Medlocks of Hancock. It was a great day when I met Dot and a wonderful evidence for this family research. George died in 1800 and his wife Ferbiee Smith married a Thomas Walker...much transpired after that as Walker was a lawyer and represented the estate of Geo Medlock in some cases...ie Hicks and 2 Brown cases as well as going to NC on a Federal Case against the estate. The executors of the estate were Ezekiel Smith, Ferbiee's father- John C. Smith - also related and ASA Castleberry---a neighbor. Ezekiel did most of the work so far as administration submissions to the courts until he became ill then John C. Smith took over for the finalization in 1826. The Ferbiee and group moved. The daughters of Ferbiee and George, Agatha married James Woodruff and Polly (Mary) married Zachariah Smith. Zachariah sued the estate in 1813 --- got guardianship of George de Lafayette (in Jasper Co where they were living-its right next to Hancock) and all the administration etc was Transferred to Hancock Co. I have copies of all the wills, administrations, plus the work I have done on each and every suit in all the courts - GA & NC & Federal Dist Ct. My earlier post on Susannah H. Medlock was related to George Medlock estate...via George being the executor of his father, Charles Medlock will..the one who died in 1797 but whose will was written in Dec. 1796. Is George a Uncle or perhaps brother to the Charles? >> George Medlock was the Uncle of Charles Medlock who was born in 1781 and died in 1840 in Hancock Ga. Brenda, I am sending a copy of this to Joe Matlock...since his work needs some help. Let me know your thoughts on the above. Regards, Mary Jean
In response to [email protected] on : I suspect John D., James M., and Charles H. were brothers but I really don't know for sure. In my gut...I think our Matlocks probably came from Franklin County, TN. I believe your right about that.. According to the Matlock Web page, work done by Jess Armstrong, they are the son of William and Mary Matlock WILLIAM and wife MARY ELIZA MATLOCK, Shown in 1830 Franklin Co., Tn. Went to Miss. early. William died before 1840. They had children: James Madison, John D., Sarah, William H., Letha Jane, Thomas J., Andrew J., Charles H. and Mary A. I believe William has a brother James who married Mary Dryer and a Charles who married a Mary M Stephens...and they are the sons of a James and Mary , but I cant figure out Which James Matlock Sr is their father.. Ive put together info on this family if you want all of it let me know and I will Email a copy of it.Brenda
First Joe: Many, many thanks for passing this on, and help, who do I contact? This is my family...certainly the Charles Medlock (Matlock?) from Hancock Cnty (b. 1781- d. 1840) is my Great Grandfather X 4...and believe me I have just about everything every printed, microfilmed etc on him and all the family up to him. Regarding Col Charles and George Medlock...I have covered just about anything ever out there on them. While the main assumption has been that Israel is the father of Charles (b. 1781-d. 1840) I have NEVER seen any primary documentation to support it....and BOY WOULD I DIE TO SEE ANY...:) I have worked so hard for so many years on this family and just when I am about to give up hope, this drops in. What a wonderful thing for you to share...Many, many thanks...May I contact this person directly...as I sure would like to hear about his documentation...But for the moment: In a message dated 07/25/2000 11:15:10 AM Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: << Descendants of Col Charles Matlock Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM JORDAN.(Have nothing or seen nothing on a Mary Ann Matlock) >> Yipes...I was so excited I just let things rip...sorry...but I can help with these Medlocks and they more are likely were really Matlocks in the beginning at any rate. Whether the above flies...I'd really have to look more critically. The following are all my family: Charles Medlock b. 1781 - d 1840 in Hancock Co Ga--Have hugh files on him as well as the Latimers back to 1631---His son Montgomery was my 3 Great Grandfather and I have everything on him and his family. Incidently, he was commission a Major in the Militia of 1838 and was not in the CSA; but his sons George (died in service at Richmond) Charles M. (discharged on a disability) and James (my 2 Greatgrandfather) did. Benjamin F. I am posting to this list realizing that the small amount of information I have is probably insufficient for anyone to make any connections but hope springs eternal! I have William R. In my gut...I think our Matlocks probably came from Franklin County, TN. Donna (Judy's sister) said that as a child she was told they probably came from somewhere in Georgia, but we don't know what the source of that guess was. I also really think Aunt Beck knows something. She claims to know nothing of her grandparents, James Matlock and Rebecca Jane Cox. About all we were able to get out of her was that James was shot to death on his porch when his son, James Oscar Matlock was a child. James Oscar was born in 1890...so we think James (husband of Janie Cox) was probably killed around 1900. For that reason, James Oscar was reared by his Uncle Wes Cox. With the exception of James Oscar Matlock, our other Matlocks haven't fared too well with longevity. William Ellison Matlock (my wife's father) died of a heart attack at the age of 46. He had several heart attacks before, the first one when in his late 30s. His grandfather, James, was the one shot to death on his porch. With the associated families, we believe Samuel Cox, Janie's father, was robbed and shot to death in his home in Carroll County. My wife's mother was murdered at the age of 46. Now I wonder what the relationship is with the Matlock brothers who had the shootout with Bedford. I had heard bits and pieces of that story. Thanks for the info on Bedford and the Matlock boys. Please keep in touch and let me know if you come across any clues. It sure would be nice to put the Mississippi Matlock puzzle together. It seems that would going a long way to tracing them back to VA.
