    3. I must leave the attachment as "not proven" but based on John having been born at the right place and time, names a son Elijah and other references to ISHAM having a son named John. The likely hood of sure proof is most remote as ISHAM's own family is not known and cannot be connected with any of the prior groups. the attachment would be strengthen if JOHN had left some record himself referring to siblings or resident grandparents. Then there is the last name...members of this family group have used the name MEDLOCK. There are families records in England from prior to or nearly prior to the arrival of the family here, that spell the name MEDLOCK. The South Carolina branch of the MEDLOCK's may well be of independent origin. ISHAM's family may well have spelled the name MATLOCK but heard it pronounced or pronounced themselves as MEDLOCK. Either way we may be looking for a different family or an obscure branch which left few if any early records. The date of the wedding or the birth date may well be in error. Keeping in mind that Juliet was only 14, it might not be a birthday error of more than a year or two. What makes the chase so interesting is the appearance of information from people as yourself who have confirming evidence for the various bits and pieces. Thanks for the information, if I find anything new I will pass it along. Best regards Joe Matlock >>> <[email protected]> 11/21/00 03:06PM >>> John Matlock born before 1784 in Washington Co., Ky & died 1877 in Arkansas or Pineville, Missouri. In your notes you state that John Matlock's attachment to this family is not proven. I have seen John's connection to this family, as to him being the s/o Isham, who was born bef 1765, before and have never really been able to assure myself that he belongs here. the date of his marriage to 1st wife Mary Polly Jefferson, would make her about 13. their first child being born in 1809 leads me to wonder if the date of marriage is correct? I can supply you lots of information on the decendants of John, born 1820. If we can only figure out how to really tie him into this family of Ishams. 2. Hi Gang, I need to ask for your help. Several folks have written offering corrections, additions and requests for my help seeking further data. Only problem is that a few folks, and I am not pointing fingers, write me mentioning so and so like I've known them all my life. Then I have to look in several databases to find this person and if you are looking for John Smith it can get tough. Any way when you write me please tell me which website you are asking questions about and give one or two names to make sure I have the right person. You don't have to send your GEDCOM (but it would be nice). Also please be patient with me I have over 100 emails just for my Matlock site waiting to be answered and now that I posted the Maples data to my Rogers website I am getting two to three a day on that. Oh well enough complaining, keep writing me. T.T.F.N. Respectfully, Shawn Z. 2. In Greenwood's 3rd edition of The Reachers Guide to American Genealogy, the Matlock family name is mentioned....saying that three brothers deliberately spelled their last names differently: MATLOCK, MATLACK AND MATLICK. No footnote or explanation but interesting to note.

If John Medlock (b. 1810 of SC, GA, AL. is the father of Jasper Newton, John Alexander, William Hudman and Robert Lewis and if this is the Jasper Newton born 1831 in Laurens County, South Carolina, then who is the father of Garrison Gibson Medlock born 19 Apr 1820 in Laurens County and raised by his grandfather "John Medlock" ? 2. How are Samuel Medlock, sometimes shown as "Foreign Born" abt. 1750 , died 1819 in South Carolina and married Eleanor related to John Medlock born abt. 1755 who married Catherine and is listed as father of Isham of 1777 (who married Susan Williams)? 1. [MATLOCK-L] update
    2. Hello Family, I trust all is well with my far flung kinfolk. I wish to thank all of you for your letters, support and prayers. My wife is now doing much better and has been out of the hospital for about four days now, just in time for her birthday come Monday. For the curious she (Vanessa) had "drug induced hepatitis" which was caused by an allergic reaction to either the anesthesia or the pain medication from the knee surgery she had two weeks before the hepatitis got bad. Also found out that there is about fifty different types of hepatitis not just type A, B or C. Just found out Friday that some of my overtime is over with. So I might get to do a little work on the good stuff instead of punching a time clock. I am only about 200 emails behind and a gillion papers to type in. So I will spend the next few weeks catching up on my mail and my massive to - do list for around the house. I have been at work so long that I just now found out we had moved to a house on bay and i can go fishing, I hope I can remember how. Again thanks for all the kind words and prayers, you will never know how much it has meant to me and my wife. Give me some time and I be in the groove again. Shawn

    2. Janet Cook
    3. Hello, Joe, I saw where you have Benjamin Medlock, father of John Alfred Medlock as son of Samuel who died 1829, Edgefield, South Carolina. Will you give me a source for this? I am working on the records from Edgefield available from the FHLC and, so far, I've not seen proof of this. I know there are a few pieces of evidence that might place Benjamin in Edgefield but, so far, I don't know if they would hold up to prove the point. [To a lineage society, for example]. Like Emma and her Moses Medlock, I want the know for sure that my Benjamin Medlock is the same one listed as a legatee of Samuel Medlock of Edgefield District. If Samuel, Sr. of Edgefield is my Benjamin's father, he & Elenor/Nelly were "probably" foreign born. The 1870 Saline County, Arkansas census show the columns relating to parents birthplace as foreign born were marked for Benjamin. BTW, I believe you are confusing two different Stephen Medlocks. The one in Edgefield died in 1834 [probate records lists his children and widow, Milly] so could not be the one who married in 1838. As far as I've found, this Stephen married only once. Regards, Janet Medlock Cook

    1. [MATLOCK-L] Medlocks in England
    2. There are/were a great many Medlocks in England. Somewhere in this mess I call my office, have some research from a lady in England who married a Medlock there. If anyone is interested I will try to find it. There is also a Medlock River, near Manchester I believe. I still believe all the different spellings etc were from diction and spelling , or perhaps a desire to start a new life with a slightly different name. Emma in NM

They were in Monroe County AL by 1830. Moses died Nov 21 1858 and Nancy on March 6 1863 in Perdue Hill, Monroe County AL According to the censuses, they had at least five children. I can only document Sophia Louisa Medlock who married James J. Ray in Monroe County AL My great grandmother Eliza was related to Moses and Nancy but I'm not sure how as she is listed as a widow, but I have found no husband. She could be a daughter, daughter in law, niece ?? Her son Sylvester Medlock was my paternal grandfather. Still searching, Emma in NM

    2. I AM FROM THE GEORGE AND JANE (HALL) MATLACK /MATLOCK LINE. THROUGH THEIR SON, JOHN MATLACK/MATLOCK, WHO MARRIED ANNE MOORE AND MOVED FROM ENGLAND TO NEW JERSEY TO VA.... THROUGH FAMILY HISTORY, FROM MY GRANDMOTHER, MYRTLE ALLURA (MATLOCK) FLINT, I WAS TOLD THE FAMILIES ORIGINAL NAME WAS MATLACK, BUT, SOME LINES, WHEN THEY CAME TO AMERICA CHANGED THE NAME TO MATLOCK. WHICH JOHN AND ANNE (MOORE) MATLOCK DID BY CHOICE. I AM SURE IN MY MIND THAT OTHERS MAY HAVE ALSO CHANGED MATLACK TO OTHER SPELLINGS. SUCH AS : MATLOTT, MATLOX, ETC. THERE WAS ALSO PROBLEMS WITH THE PEOPLE WRITING THE NAMES AS THEY CAME INTO AMERICAN PORTS TO AMERICA.. AS SPELLING IN THOSE DAYS USED A LOT OF WHAT WE NOW CALL PHONICS. OR BY SOUND. AS THEY WERE NOT AS LITERATE AS WE ARE TODAY. ON THIS LINE I HAVE ONLY FOUND MATLACK IN ENGLAND AND MATLOCK, WHEN THEY CAME TO AMERICA. WOULD LOVE TO COMPARE NOTES ON THIS LINE. AND EM I AGREE WITH YOUR 2 CENTS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. LYNDA LYNDA

    3. Hi, My two cents worth. AND it's an "I don't know either". Newton Jasper is my GGGGGrandfather and I sure wish I could link him to parents and siblings. I do believe that a vast majority of the spellings tend to be mis-spellings due to lack of formal education, dialects, etc. I also have a Garrison but do not have a middle name - I do believe it is Gibson but can't prove it. He was born 1854 and married a Mary Ann "Mollie" Davis. John
