I've copied hundreds of documents in Roane County, TN where Jason lived and I have never seen his name James Jason on a document it is always just Jason. Would like to know the source. 3. Lynn Here is a composite message some new charts. Thanks for all of your help. Best Regards Joe Matlock Descendants of Stephen Matlock Generation No. 1 1. STEPHEN1 MATLOCK was born 1773 in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and died 28 October 1853 in Tattnall County, Georgia. He married (1) MARY STANLEY 05 March 1809 in Tattnall County, Georgia. She was born 1792, and died 14 October 1837 in Tattnall County, Georgia. She is buried in the Matlock Family Cemetery on the family land in Tattnall County, Georgia, near the Altamaha River.. He married (2) MARY COPELAND 26 August 1838. She was born 1817 in Liberty County, Georgia, and died 30 December 1847 in Tattnall County, Georgia. They are buried in the Matlock Family Cemetery on the family land in Tattnall County, Georgia, near the Altamaha River.. Notes for STEPHEN MATLOCK: "Stephen Matlock died October 28,1853, leaving a large estate, which took about 6 years to settle. Co-executors were his son Stephen Matlock and his daughter, Florida's husband, Elza Tillman. Evidently, his eldest son, John, was disinherited for he was not listed as one of 7 heirs who drew lots out of a hat to decide who would inherit 7 slaves for each heir from the 47 slaves in the estate in 1854. About 1856 or 57 the disinherited son, John, went to court to challenge the way the executors were administering the estate. Later, court records reveal that Stephen Matlock and Elza Tillman, as executors had to pay $100.00 in legal fees for this law suit. I have no other information on this John Matlock and could not find him on the GA Censuses." The information concerning Stephens children came "from the 1850 Montgomery Co. GA Census, the 1860 San Augustine Co, TX Census, the 1870 Shelby Co. Census and the book, Our Dead: Shelby County, Texas 1836-1964 by J. B. Sanders." I don't know who Samuel Augustine Medlock married. 2. The twins are the children of Stephen and Elizabeth Matlock as far as I know. Also Florida Matlock, dau of the elder Stephen Matlock married: 1. Lewis DeSheels,27 Nov 1845, settled in Milledgeville, GA, they had one dau, Juliette DeSheels and then Lewis DeSheels died. I have no dates for this yet. 2. Elza Tillman ( date unknown) He died in the Civil War Jan 1864 near Richmond, Fort Bend Co., TX. I will send you their children later. 3. Thomas P. Payne ( after the Civil War and before 1875). No children. She died at 63 in Milam, Sabine Co. TX in 1893. This is to clear up an error in the order of her marriages to her three husbands. Merry Christmas, Lynn Hi Joe, About 6 months ago I emailed you info on Stephen Medlock of SC. At the time I believed that this Stephen was the same man as Stephen Matlock of Tattnall Co, GA. Careful study of the 1820 SC and GA Census has proven this to be wrong. Stephen Medlock appears on the 1820 SC Census. His wife was Millie Swearingen and their children were Martha, Rachel, Moses, Samuel Augustine, and Stephen Martin. They lived in Edgefield District, SC. Stephen Matlock appears on the 1820 Georgia Census as being 45 yrs or older, with 1 male under 10, 2 females 16-26 and 1 female under 10. He lived on a large plantation in Tattnall Co. on the Altamaha River, south of Glennville, GA. In addition to the Census data, a gift deed in 1838 made by Stephen Matlock did not list any of the children of Stephen Medlock as heirs to his land. I am the great great grandaughter of this Stephen Matlock. In August my husband and I made a genealogical trip to GA and SC, visiting 6 genealogical libraries and archives. Here is the most correct data that I have compiled since I wrote to you. Stephen Matlock was born abt. 1773, probably in SC and died October 28 in Tattnall Co., GA. at the age of 80, according to his tombstone. He married (1) Mary Stanley March 5,1809, Tattnall Co. Ga. She was b. 1792 and died October 14,1837 in Tattnall Co., GA. He married (2) Mary Copeland 1838. She was b. 1817 Liberty Co., GA and d. December 30, 1847 in Tattnall Co. GA. They are all buried in the Matlock Family Cemetery on the family land in Tattnall Co.,GA, near the Altamaha River. Stephen Matlock first appears on a deed in 1788 as coming from Orangeburg, SC with John Duke to buy land granted in 2 grants: 287.5 acres granted July 1, 1788 on the Altamaha River 2 miles below Oswell's Bluff and the other being 400 acres granted Jan. 14,1788 on the same river. The other deed is dated Oct.27,1799. This may have been a contract for deed with the actual deed recorded after payment in full. Stephen Matlock was not of age in 1788, being abt 15 at the time the land was bought. John Duke is on the 1790 SC Census as being a single man, head of household with 1 teenage male living with him. I believe that was probably Stephen Matlock, who had been orphaned and that John Duke may have been his guardian or just a relative of some kind, who took him in. Later, John Duke married and moved to Georgia. On August 6, 1806 Duke transferred the land to Stephen Matlock by transfer of grantor's rights and titles. Possibly the land was bought with money Stephen inherited and that is the reason John Duke transfered it to Stephen Matlock when he was of legal age. Children of Stephen Matlock and Mary Stanley are: John, Stephen, Louisa, William, Caroline, Georgia, Florida. Mary Stanley died October 14, 1837 In a gift deed Aug 20,1838, Stephen Matlock bequeathed his land in Tattnall Co. to his children: John, Stephen, William, Carolina, Georgia and Florida. (Louisa Matlock had married in 1837.) On 26th August 1838, Stephen Matlock married Mary Copeland. The children of Stephen Matlock and Mary Copeland are Charlton H. Matlock b. abt. 1839 and Charles Matlock b. abt 1841. Mary Copeland died 30 December 1847 and is buried in the Matlock Family Cemetery, Tattnall Co., GA. Stephen Matlock died October 28,1853, leaving a large estate, which took about 6 years to settle. I have no other information on this John Matlock and could not find him on the GA Censuses. I have additional information on Stephen Matlock, son of the elder Stephen Matlock. Stephen b. 17 Sep 1821, Tattnall Col, GA and d. 13 Nov 1903,near Patroon, Shelby Co.,TX. He married Elizabeth Tillman 39 Dec 1841, Montgomery Co, GA. She was the daughter of Henry Tillman and Alef Simmons. Also, Elizabeth was the sister of Elza Tillman who married Stephen Matlock's sister, Florida Matlock. Elizabeth d. 10 Aug 1896 near Patroon, Shelby Co. TX. Both she and Stephen, the younger are buried in the Matlock Family Cemetery in southern Shelby Co, TX near Patroon, TX Children of Stephen and Elizabeth Matlock are: William Henry b. 11 Oct 1842, Montgomery Co., GA, John B. Matlock b. 1845, Montgomery Co., GA, Mary Alef Matlock b. 15 Apr 1846 Montgomery Co., GA, Stephen T. b. 21 May 1848 Montgomery Co., GA, Florida Matlock (niece of Florida Matlock Tillman) b. 4 Jan 1850, Montgomery Co.,Ga, m. The above material came from the 1850 Montgomery Co. GA Census, the 1860 San Augustine Co, TX Census, the 1870 Shelby Co. Census and the book, Our Dead: Shelby County, Texas 1836-1964 by J. B. Sanders. It appears that Stephen Matlock lived in southern Montgomery Co., GA in a settlement known as Boxwood or Boxville where he was postmaster. Abt 1860 Stephen and Elizabeth Matlock, Elza and Florida Tillman and a number of other Georgia moved to east Texas with their slaves in a wagon train. I just wanted to clear up the mistake I made confusing Stephen Medlock and Matlock. Let me know if you have any info pertaining to Stephen Matlock in SC. Thanks Lynn Meador Hall Houston

Since Hester's legacy was 1/7 of two-thirds and that was divided up between her heirs, it stands to reason that she was also daughter of Samuel Medlock. She married 1st, 1802, to James Singleton [NSDAR Vol. 150, p.221]. The newspaper "Georgia Journal" Aug 14, 1813 edition, shows that by Aug 1813, James Singleton of Putnam Co., GA was deceased. In 1816, Hester Singleton married John H. Hester died between Jan & Jul 1827 [Putnam Co., GA Extracts Vol I, Tad Evans, p.167, 176, 194]. I have not verified any of this with the actual Putnam county records as yet. Again Thanks Joe Matlock >>> <[email protected]> 12/18/00 03:04PM >>> Hi Joe, About 6 months ago I emailed you info on Stephen Medlock of SC. I have no other information on this John Matlock and could not find him on the GA Censuses. I have additional information on Stephen Matlock, son of the elder Stephen Matlock. I don't mean to be a pest or harass you, Harass you, harass you, I don't mean to be a pest or harass you, But I really need those family group sheets! I need to know was it Jack or Joe, Or was it Fred, George, Bill, or was it Uncle Francis? Who was your great grandpa? Are we related after all? I need help filling in fam'ly tree branches! I'll gladly reimburse you copy fees and postage costs, Copy fees and postage costs, copy fees and postage costs. I don't expect something for nothing, I have much to share. Collaborating will make a Merry Christmas! Perhaps you think you haven't much I need to know, But I assure you every little piece helps! It takes more than just names that match and dates that seem to fit To put together an accurate family history! So much has been lost with the passage of time And the failure of most folks to keep in touch. Our lives might seem quite dull and of no import But one can't know which mundane things will mean so much! One day, when down the road our bones have turned to dust, Have turned to dust, have turned to dust. Our family will know how we lived if we will only learn to share Pieces of ourselves through family history. It's true some may say, she was a wacky ole dame, Who seemed to care more for the dead than for the living. But time will tell, if she spent her time well Please remember it is the season to be giving! I hope you're not offended by my begging song, My begging song, my begging song. I hope you'll note my address and you'll send ASAP Family history to wish me Merry Christmas! >> ______________________________ Carol Langley Researching Miller, Fischer, Albright, Albrecht, Eisley, Lander, Tiemann, Korsmeyer, Schienbaum

Also, I just emailed about 250 Matlocks and invited them to visit my/our website. So far about 10 people have written me. 3. Merry Christmas, Joe! Thanks for sharing your Medlock/Matlock info. > If any of you know any of these folk or can contribute to the cause of > tying the family together please feel free to respond. I would like to take you up on contributing by sharing a small nugget or two on this Medlock line. Some of your info is different from mine, so I hope you don't mind my inserting it here. I offer it only as my interpretation of records and it is certainly not meant to be the final word. In genealogy, hardly anything is! I welcome (and encourage) corrections of my research. > Descendants of Samuel Medlock > > Generation No. 1 > > 1. SAMUEL1 MEDLOCK was born 1750 in Foreign Born, and died 1829 in Edgefield District, South Carolina. He married ELEANOR NELLIE. > > > Children of SAMUEL MEDLOCK and ELEANOR NELLIE are: I know that Elenor/Nellie was the widow of Samuel at the time of his death. Whether she is the mother of all/any of his children is unknown (by me, at least). Samuel's birth year is very intriguing. Do you know what the source might be? I've seen it as abt 1740 [DAR records] but I can find only that he was 45+ in the censuses. > i. MARY2 MEDLOCK. Mary was married to Lewis FREDERICK at the time of Samuel's land partition in 1829. [LDS film #23974: Court of Ordinary, Records of Proceedings in Cases of Summons in Partition, 1825-1839, p.45 "Lewis Holmes & wife vs Nelly Medlock, Stephen Medlock & others, 12 Oct 1829"] One other person listed in the partition was Hester Walker, formerly Hester Singleton. WALKER in Putnam Co., GA.[GRS CD #3] Heirs of Hester [from Samuel Medlock's land partition] were Leroy Singleton, Samuel Singleton, Benjamin Singleton, Elizabeth who married Lewis HOLMES and Harriett Walker. Hester died between Jan & Jul 1827 [Putnam Co., GA Extracts Vol I, Tad Evans, p.167, 176, 194]. I have not verified any of this with the actual Putnam county records as yet. This info comes from Tad Evans' newspaper books located at the Dallas, TX library. > iii. NANCY MEDLOCK, b. 1772, South Carolina; d. 1854; m. PHINEAS SUTTON. The only DAR member who descends from Samuel Medlock is from this line through Nancy & Phineas' son, Aaron. > Generation No. 2 > > 2. STEPHEN2 MEDLOCK (SAMUEL1) was born 1770, and died 04 June 1834. He > married (1) MILLIE SWEARENGEN, daughter of CPT VAN SWEARENGEN and RACHEL. > He married (2) MARY STANLEY 05 May 1805 in Glenville, Tattnall County, > Georgia. He married (3) MARY COPELAND 26 August 1838 in Tattnal County, > Georgia. Stephen did die in Edgefield District, South Carolina in 1834 but he was still married to Millie so he could not be the one who was in Georgia. [SC Archives Box #19, pkg #679, Stephen Medlock, decd. John Gomillion admx - thanks to a generous Medlock researcher for sharing this with me!] It states, in part: "Stephen Medlock died 14 Jan 1834 left a widow Milly Medlock and Van Medlock, Rachael Medlock, Samuel Medlock, Sophia Medlock who intermarried with John McVoy, Ellen Medlock who intermarried with Wilson Whatley, Martha Medlock who is now the wife [of] Brit McClendon, Moses Medlock who died 25 Sep 1831 leaving a widow and two children[,] George and Martin, Zilpha Medlock". I didn't see a son named Stephen listed. > 4. BENJAMIN J.2 MEDLOCK (SAMUEL1) was born 20 September 1785 in Edgefield District, South Carolina, and died 14 September 1874 in Collegeville, Arkansas. This is my line through his son, John Alfred and grandson, John Forsyth Medlock. I'm curious about the "J." in Benjamin's name. Do you know where that comes from? > Children of BENJAMIN MEDLOCK and JANE SWEARINGTON [SWEARINGEN-jmc] are: > i. THOMAS3 MEDLOCK, b. 20 August 1808, Benton, Yazoo County, Mississippi; d. November 1865, Tippah County, Mississippi; m. MARY JANE STENSON; b. 1820, Alabama; d. 30 June 1855, Tippah County, Mississippi. > Thomas was most likely born in Edgefield Dist, SC because obit of brother, John Alfred, states that he (John Alfred) was born in Edgefield in 1812. Benjamin & family left SC in 1818 [Fred. Swearingen registered Benjamin's slaves in Richmond, GA in Nov 1818 - NGS Qtly Vol 58, #1, p.45] Thomas married Mary Jane Stinson 2 Aug 1838 [Medlock Bible, dated 1815, in poss of Doris Haskett, Little Rock, AR, 1994 - my father's first cousin, now deceased. The bible's whereabouts unknown at this time]. > ii. SARAH JANE MEDLOCK, b. 12 March 1810. Sarah married Isaac Moore BELOTE, 2 Sep 1830. [Medlock Bible] Most likely married in Fayette Co., TN since family en in census there that year. > iii. JOHN ALFRED MEDLOCK, b. 12 January 1812, Edgefield District, South Carolina; d. 27 August 1894, Saline County, Arkansas. He is buried in the Medlock Famly Lot, Collegeville Cemetery, Collegeville, Saline County, Arkansas.; m. MARY LAURA FORSYTHE, He married Mary Ladd FORSYTH,[Medlock bible] daughter of Benjamin FORSYTH and Elizabeth LADD. [The Saline,(Saline Co. AR Gen Soc) Vol. 5, No. 4; p.152 "The Forsyth Ancestry of Mary Ladd (Forsyth) Medlock and Her Descendants", submitted by Doris Haskett] > Notes for JOHN ALFRED MEDLOCK: > John A. is shown as "Judge Medlock". According to Daniel Kent Kelso > ([email protected]) John Alfred was born in Benton, Yazoo County, Mississippi. > In 1860 this family is shown as living in Cedar Creek Township Crawford > County, Arkansas. Mr. Kelso must be confusing this family with another one. In 1860 John Alfred and Mary Ladd Medlock were enumerated in Saline County, Arkansas, pgs. 83-84, dwl 852. They were near Benton, Saline County, Arkansas. If anyone would like more info on my Medlocks, please let me know and I'll be happy to pass it along. Janet Medlock Cook
