Carolyn Sue Nothing like starting out Monday Morning with the big ones. There are Two large schools of thought for Richard. The one you out line is the most common. However, as we have recently found the work down by Dr. JWL Matlock on his Franklin county, Tennessee family has proposed a new family for Richard which I present to you below. The complete chart from Dr. Matlock' s book is in the rootsweb achieve of the Matlock list messages and there have been no changes. I have found some information at the LDS site that supports some elements of this chart. I was hoping that some of our Virginia cousins might shed some light on the subject. There may well be TWO Richards?? Please feel free to comment. Good Luck Joe Matlock Descendants of Richard Matlock Generation No. 1 1. I just thought I'd send you a note to ask you do you have a list of the ancestors of Richard Matlock who was born in April 1761 in Granville, North Carolina and died 04 November 1847 in Hawkins County, Tennessee? I have it from two other sources that his ancestry was like this: Richard Matlock, son of Nicholas Matlock, Sr., who was the son of John Moore Matlock, Jr., who was the son of John Moore Matlock, Sr. ( the emmigrant ), who was the son of George Matlock, who was the son of John Matlock. I think you have it differently. Could you please send me what you have so that I can compare it with what I have? Thank you, Carlyon Sue McKinney
Well, it seems this list has been a bit quiet lately. Hopefully we have some new folks who got computers for Christmas and have begun to search. I'm STILL trying to find a husband for Eliza Medlock and a father for her son' Sylvester Medlock. If that' s not possible, I would love information on the children of Moses and Nancy Perryman Medlock. They were both born in Edgefield District,SC and were in Monroe County AL by about 1830. One census says they had 5 children. I have documented one for sure, Sophia Louisa Medlock who married James J. Ray. Other possibilities are Martha and perhaps Eliza, although I suspect Eliza was a daughter in law. If anyone knows any of the names of the children of Moses and Nancy Perryman Medlock , please enlighten me. Thanks, Emma in NM
For those researching the Matlock family in Ohio in the 1800's, I have just uploaded my family tree containing Matlocks to the Rootsweb WorldConnect site. To search the tree, go to http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=lahayashi and type "Matlock" to obtain an index. Suggestions or corrections are welcome. Jon Short answer is NO, but I probably have some of the descendants. I had not seen a Simpson MEDLOCK in South Carolina until this one. If I may ask is your John related to the Thomas of 1808 or involved with the Grandfather John who raised Garrison Gibson (who had a son John)? Does Newton Jasper of 1831 and his brother Wesley figure into the mix? The first candidate I had was John of 1812 son of Benjamin and Jane Swearington of the Edgefield District but I now think he was born in Mississippi. Sorry to be of no direct help but if you have some of the descendants information I will be glad to check my data base. Good Luck Joe Matlock >>> "Jon Medlock" <[email protected]> 01/11/01 10:41AM >>> Joe, John MEDLOCK was my direct ancestor tracing back to his birth about 1810 is SC. Do you know if your Simpson Matlock had a brother named John MEDLOCK? We've hit a brick wall with John. There is some evidence that he was born in Scotland. We are pursuing that info now. Thanks, Jon Medlock -----Original Message----- From: Joe Matlock [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, January 11, 2001 10:28 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [MATLOCK-L] Re: John Wesley Matlock, Medlock Calvin Other than all of the Matlocks in Tennessee are of some kin I know of no direct link between us. The only other Simpson Matlock ( no direct kin either) I have found so far in the son of William Arner and Mary Simpson (hence the name ) born 1814 died 1875 and married a Shumate. However your information plays well into a most interesting area of family "business" , namely who are the Medlocks? Remebering that nothing is carved in stone there would seem to be two great clans of Medlocks. One Clan in earliy Virginia with Isham in the lead moving across Kentucky some into Tennessee, to Arkansas and Missouri with families staying and moving on and groups breaking off into Illinois and Indiana. Some of these Missouri cousins are Matlock and some are Medlock. Then when and why the change varies. The other grat clan of Medlocks come from South Carolina and there is little confusion about the name. They are Medlocks, but your "Simpsom A." is the first one I have seen by th! at name. I will continue to look. I have a chart below that combines our infomation. The reward is in the hunt. Joe Matlock Descendants of Simpson A. Matlock Generation No. 1 1. Lem Saw your you note on Genforum and I believe I can contribute to the cause. Below are two charts I have collected over the years. I believe the over laps are supporting evidence. The Thomas Buckingham Matlock who married Elizabeth Mckinney had a son Thomas J. born at about the right time. I also found a Thomas Jefferson born at about the right time who has children of the same name as yours. While this is not direct "evidence" I believe it supports the contentions. I am going to include your material into my notes with a point that the attachment is conditional. thanks Joe Matlock Descendants of Thomas Jefferson Matlock Generation No. 1 1. Calvin Other than all of the Matlocks in Tennessee are of some kin I know of no direct link between us. They are Medlocks, but your "Simpsom A." is the first one I have seen by that name. I will continue to look. I have a chart below that combines our infomation. The reward is in the hunt. Joe Matlock Descendants of Simpson A. Matlock Generation No. 1 1. A few years back I went to Martin TN.to look up My family I found a photo shop owned by Vernon Matlock happened to be a cousin and he made it possible to get in touch with a Glen Matlock. I would include a copy in this mail but I am not at home I live in Illinois and am in Mesa AZ. for the winter and records are at home. I also have a land deed a sale between the Matlocks listing as one whom sold land to her son as Mrs. S.A. Matlock so this could be Mrs. S.A. Medlock. I found Simpson Medlock listed in the 1850 Census living in Chickasaw County Miss.Wife Martha and son Austin Then in 1870 I found them in Weakley County TN.Medlock S.A., Martha , Austin and John W.Then in 1880 Census Weakly County TN.I found Austin Medlock, his wife Lydia P.,Children Cinthia, William, John B., Thomas A., Mary P., and his father Simpson A. This Marriage Lic.can be found at Union City Obion County TN. Land deeds can be found Martin, Weakly county, TN. This couple is buried in the Pavillion Cemetery in Kendall Township, Kendall County Illinois.. Notes for DAVID MATLOCK: In 1850 this family is living in Jo Davies County, Illinois. From Illinois Baptist Pastoral Union Illinois Baptist State Annual, 1879: Rev. David Matlock. This brother was born near Bloomington, Indiana, Feb. 16th, 1819, and died suddenly in Union County, Illinois, Sept. 2nd. 1878 in the 60th year of his age. He was the seventh son of John and Alma Matlock, who were the parents of ten children, eight sons and two daughters. All these sons, except the youngest; were men of large physical proportions and more than average mental ability. They were all men of probity and influence. The father of the deceased, at an early day, with his family settled in Kendall County, Illinois. David's opportunities for intellectual culture were limited to the advantages afforded by the cornmon schools of Indiana and Illinois, which, at that early day, were not remarkable for efficiency or thoroughness. At the age of sixteen he was converted, and immediately afterwards he and his father rode twenty-six miles, to the nearest Baptist church, in what was then known as Yankee Settlement. He was baptized by Rev. A.B. Freeman. His was the first baptism in the waters of the Fox River. In Jn. 1851 he was licensed to preach after having undergone a very severe struggle in regard to duty. He was ordained in June 1852. He subsequently became pastor of the Baptist church in Lancaster, Wisconsin. In 1852, he received a commission from the American Home Mission Society. He has been pastor of the following churches: Argyle, Wisconsin; Payson, Warren, Jefferson Grove and Rochelle, Illinois; Lancaster, Wis. twice; St. Charles, Bloomingdale, Liberty, Otterville, Carbondale, Pavilion, in Illinois; St, Charles twice. After leaving Payson he labored successfully for a season as missionary of our State Board. His record has been blameless. His life unsulled. He was a man of large heart and sympathies; conscious of perfect integrity himself, he had no fellowship with hypocrisy or deceit in others. Bold in his denunciations of wrong, pro-slavery men and sentiments withered under his denunciations. He was also ruthlessly bitter- in his denunciations of the liquor traffic, as well as terribly severe in his attacks upon the license system. His ministerial life was eminently successful. He baptized about three hundred persons, many of them in middle life. On the first day of September he took a severe cold. The next day, which was the Lord's day, he complained of severe pain in his jaw, arms and chest, which he considered neuralgia... he was found by a neighbor, under the shade of a wide spreading oak by the wayside, lying on his face in the stillness of death.... a noble-hearted, generous minded Christian minister, an excellent godly man. At his death he was a member of the church in St. Charles. (Above article sent by Virginia Zeboski). Above David was a son of John Matlock (Sr.) of Kendall Co., Illinois from Indiana. x. Just saw your letter on lost lines and low and behold this John Matlock is my Great Uncle. His brother was my Grandfather Robert Franklin Matlock and their Father was Littleberry Franklin Matlock Jr. They originated from Franklin Co. Alabama. This Littleberry (or as we called him Daddy Berry) was married to Ophelia Ontwain in Alabama and they moved to Giles Co. which was divided to become Giles and Maury Co. Their Daughter Audrey Ophelia died as an infant or young toddler. They had another son not listed named Brown. I can track down more info and will forward soon. Sandee Matlock Richardson
Hello Gang, I have some more reading material for everyone. First is a continuation of the story of Matlack's grave. The second article is about the famous Matlock/ Forrest gunfight but told by one of our own. I trust you will enjoy the articles. This time I have managed to get permission from all involved. Am I good or what ? (Don't answer that). The link is below. Enjoy. Posted on: MEDLOCK Bible Records Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/surnames/m/e/MEDLOCK/bible_records/5 Surname: Medlock ------------------------- We have a Nathaniel that came to Abbeville Co SC circa 1790's and has 5 sons. Our James Medlock (1800-1837) we believe was a son of his but we can't prove it. We have always suspected that they came from Burke Co NC. Any help you could give me would be very much appreciated. We know there were two John Medlock's that lived in Greenville county Sc about this time and one of their sons was Silas Medlock who married a Murff. We believe our James and Silas were close kind. Thanks
