Hi List.. This is where my mind is running to, on the Ishams.. Anyone have any thoughts? Id like to hear about them.. Brenda The Earliest Isham Medlock that I have seen is one that is listed: American Genealogical-Biographical Index MEDLOCK Isham Born 174? Virginia Historical reg. Of Virginians in the Rev., soldiers, saliors and marines, 1775-1783. Ed. By John H. Gwathmey. Richmond, Va. 1938. (13, 872p.):542 I am not familiar with that index, But from what I understand AGBI is an index to individuals appearing in family histories and other genealogical works, and researchers are encouraged to locate and examine the material from which the database was created. If not available from your local academic or research library, most of the works referenced in the AGBI are housed at the Godfrey Memorial Library in Connecticut. A photocopy service is available. Please contact Godfrey Memorial Library, 134 Newfield St, Middletown, CT 06457 (I have taken the above infromation from Ancestry.com. ) So if any of you have access to the above type Info.. Please let me know what you find... Thanks to Winnie for putting out some of Marie Harris and Melba Woods work,as well as what Shawn and Jana has done with Jess Armstrong work There appears to be an Isham that was in Botetourt Co VA Botetourt County was created in 1769 from Augusta County ....Augusta County was created in 1738 from Orange County.. This is in a sense taking us away from the New Kent/Hanover Co area... BUT If you look at a 1770 map of VA ( at US Genweb.). Botetort Co Boarders with Bedford Co VA.. Bringing us back to William of 1702 Etc.. So I assume one can forget about Augusta Co and we can go back to thinking of the John Matlock SR and lines.... Looking at what info can be found for Botetourt Co There was these Matlocks that were there: First there was a William.. 1779.. He was shot to death "The Sentence passed by the Cort Marshall & the Same Wm. Matlock to Be shot to Death at Six o'clock this Evening, the whole of the Troops to assemble at that hour on the Grand Parade & attend the Execution." guessing that this William was abt 25... that puts him born abt 1752...( I wish I was more familiar with the ages of these Military Men... Could he be 40? born 1712? Could he be 30? Born 1722?) Is he a son of William of 1702, Whose children have never really been identified... This William beings he is in Bedford Co.....Now also Keep in Mind that there was a Isom in Ablemarle Co , Along side William of 1702... Is Isom/ Isham a son of William of 1702?????? Survey in county 1768: Isom MATLOCK 350A; ( Guessing that this Isom is 25ish old enough to have land, puts him born in 1743... abt the time the Index above is putting him... Was William of 1702 having children born at that time he would be 41.. and in Goochland Co Va Married to a Catherine... from 1781-1785 Matlocks named are Isham. Moore. Charles. John and a Berry... So here we have Isham.. Is this the one that is born abt 174? OR Is this the one that Jess has born abt 1762 Augusta Co? the one that married a Martha in 1788 Botetourt Co? There was an Isham that was in Henry Co VA.. 1777 and 1778... in which 1777 was the year that Henry Co was created in.. from Pittsylvania Co This puts in the Halifax area.. Again William of 1702 and Moore Matlock etc are there.... Marie Harris was making a conection with the Isham in Henry Co and the one in Botetourt as one and the same... She is thinking on the lines of this Isham possibly being the son of Mooar Matlock who was mentioned in Hanover Co 1734.. ... For she believes that the Mooar in Hanover 1734.. Is Possibly one of the sons of John Sr.. a brother to John Jr and Hester... Half brother to William of 1702. father of Moore born abt 1732 ( If William of 1702 is the father of Moore Matlock born 1732 ( according to Melba Woods) Did he name Moore after his brother? ) I suppose that Mooar Could also be a son of John and Hester... especially snice John and Hester Married before 1689... ( according to William Watson Will) Anyway Getting back to Isham.... this Isham shows in Botetourt Co in 1782 and the according to Jess (Isham served in the American Revolutionary War as evidenced by many payroll records beginning 1776 until 1782. He served in the 7th Va. Regt) and that he died in Botetourt Co ( I have seen 1825 and 1828....

I need to get some information from the researcher. You had Thomas B. Matlock marrying ELIZABETH ANN BETSY MCKINNEY > 20 August 1846 in Carter County, Tennessee. I have the marriage record of a Thomas B. MATTOCK to ELIZABETH McKINNEY on the very same date in Wright Co. Missouri. Coincidence or an error!?! EMAIL received 31 Jan 2001 form Lem Guthert Joe, After a little more work, I have broken the tie with Thomas B. Matlock son of Isom Matlock. In the Census record for 1870, Thomas Jefferson Matlock says his father was born in Kentucky, not Missouri. Now, I need to pursue those records more. Older family members report that Thomas B. Matlock's wife was Betsy Ann McKinney not Elizabeth. Coincidence or not it just doesn't fit. The birth dates are skewed as well. Will let you know if I find something more concrete. But a good disconnect is as important as a proven connection. So I will quit propagating an error. Some more from the Melungeon list; seems to begin to explain why mention may have felt ominous to some & why research is tough. The link references are excellent - Jana ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ POLITICS, RACE AND DR. PLECKER: The proud, strong, courageous, people called Melungeons were discriminated against by their Scots-Irish and English neighbors as they moved into the areas where the Melungeons lived. They wanted the rich valley lands occupied by the Melungeons they found residing there. They practiced RACIAL discrimination against the Melungeons because they were darker skinned than their own anglo-saxon ancestors and because this helped them obtain the lands they coveted. In a society where slavery was an accepted way of life, where genocide against the American Indian was government policy, hiding was sometimes the only way to survive. This discrimination carried into the 1940's-50's and perhaps even longer, because of the work of a man named Walter A. Plecker, who was the state of Virginia's first Director of Vital Statistics and an avowed racist. Some Germans say that it was he, who first gave them the idea of eugenics, that was used during WWII to help exterminate 6 million Jews. Plecker labeled the Melungeons, calling them `mongrels' and other worse terms - some were labeled FPC - Free Person of Color in Virginia. This in turn led to their children being labeled as Mulatto (M) and both of those terms came to mean "BLACK." (There is information on Plecker and the letters he wrote to all the counties in VA and the surrounding states to marginalize and discriminate against the Melungeons on various websites noted below. Some Melungeon families married white, some black, some Indian, some a combination. But for all of them, the terms led to rulings in which they couldn't own property, they couldn't vote, and they couldn't school their children with local white children. Is it any wonder that they became ANYTHING else in order to do these things? They hid their backgrounds with the Indian myth, with the orphan myth (my family are all dead) , and the adopted myth, and they changed either the spelling of their surnames or they picked an entirely new name, moving many times, anything to distance themselves from their Melungeon heritage. They became `Black Dutch,' `Black Irish,' `Black Scot or Swede,' or some other combination to hide their "otherness." Is it any wonder they are so hard to find? They deliberately made it so, in order for their descendants to have a better life than they had had. http://www.geocities.com/bourbonstreet/inn/1024/plecker.html http://members.xoom.com/BJ_Dillon/plecker.html
Hi everyone, Wow! Lots of interest and I am glad.... my own forays into the world of Melungeons is looking better and better... First of all, I wanted to be sure we all get in on this, so I am posting this reply to the list even tho Melissa sent it to me off-list. Here are excerpts of what I found on Black Dutch at Ancestry.com: http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/ancmag/2528.asp Start Your Engines: The Right Tool for the Right Search Rhonda R. McClure ...I was asked to locate information on the Black Irish. A similar question in the past on the Black Dutch had led me on quite an adventure, so it was with enthusiasm that I began the search for the answer to the question: Who are the Black Irish? ...Black Irish Theories My research surprised me. I found that there is much confusion about the origin of the Black Irish. One theory maintains that these dark Irish and Irish-Americans are descended from members of the Spanish Armada who married into Irish families. In autumn of 1588, approximately seven hundred Spanish sailors were aboard the Felicima Armada that shipwrecked on the northern and western coasts of Ireland. A small number of those sailors did manage to make it to the coast and survive. However, there were not enough survivors to support a new interracial groupnot one that would leave its mark on descendants some four hundred years later. Another theory stems from the Irish slaves who were taken to the Caribbean island of Montserrat during the time of Cromwell. The Black Irish are said to be the descendants of these Irish immigrants and the Black slaves that lived there. A possible case could be made for this theory, as the descendants that live there today are said to speak with an Irish accent. However, like the Black Dutch, the term "black" may be of American creation. The term is not used much in Ireland itself. And much of what is claimed to be known of the Black Irish appears to be primarily conjecture... Do go read through the links I sent if you are interested in this topic... there is LOTS of GOOD info out there. From the book I bought, "Melungeons, yesterday and today" by Jean Patterson Bible, the primary surnames between 1830 and 1850 are: BEAN, BOLIN, BOWLING, BUNCH, COLE, COLLINS, DELP, GIBSON, GIPSON, GOEN, GOODMAN, GOWINS, HALE, JONES, MINOR, MOORE, MOSELEY, MULLINS, NICHOLS, SEXTON, WILLIAMS If any of these families married MATLOCKS, we are on to something! Hello everyone, I am fresh back from GenTech 2001 where I was able to buy a book on the Melungeons - it is fascinating!!! Good old Richard Matlock/Medlock certainly lived in the right locality to be part of this ethnic group! I know that the folks on this list are open-minded enough to view this as an important area of our common genealogy to untangle just like everything else we have covered and worked on ... Obviously, the information will be relevant to some MATLOCK lines (like mine, mebbe) and not to others... In any case, there is definitely evidence of Melungeon Matlock family members. Here is what I have found so far: There is a Melungeon mailing list here if any of you want to subscribe: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Ethnic/Melungeon.html I just subscribed and it is a BUSY list... In searching the archives of the list, here is what I find regarding MATLOCKS so far: The Douglas Register" by Rev. William Douglas Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc. Van SWEARINGEN was born about 1743 in Edgecombe Co., NC. He later moved to Anson Co., NC and finally settled in Edgefield District, SC (these are the old counties, so they may not correspond to the modern counties by the same name). Van married Rachel (possibly CLOUD) in 1775. Van registered for military service in Edgefield and reached the rank of Captain. Van died in 1808, Rachel after 1810. I really do not know what this means and am looking for enlightenment. My aunt's name was Cora Josephine MEDLOCK. She died July 13, 1980, TN. She was married to Raymond Douglas CROW in Tennessee. If anyone can inform me about this relationship and the Black Dutch, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, John W. I intend to continue to research this and think it would be just delightful to learn who all those 13-14 children of Richard's were and which mother they went to. Good morning ... gang For years we, Rineharts, have been researching 1.1.3.5. Zachariah MATLOCK and Lucy WASH, thinking he was our gr gr grandmothers ancestor, only to discover through Melba WOOD , that his cousin, 1.1.5.1. Zachariah MATLOCK and Eady PAINE, the son of 1.1.5. Moore MATLOCK and Jane POWELL is our ancestor. (See my MATLOCK JOURNAL) Jana, Shawn and Brenda each have a copy In the interm I have contacted Lee-Anne on the side, as I have printed off a couple pages for her, and will send as soon as I receive an address. [pages 39 & 40] Joe did I E-mail you a copy of my Matlock Journal ??? I keep adding to it .... so it constantly keeps out of date, but it does have an index also each individual has a number to help us point out the individual we are referring to. Will try to send if you haven't already got one. Winnie from Scio, OR

I have over the years and before I kept better notes found listings of middle and sometimes first names for which I have lost the source and or there is not agreement in the family. I try then to edit them out when I send out the information hopeing to consentrate on the current issue. This time I have left them in. Wether they are John Moore or Moore or John or Moore John is a different issue. Hopfully these will get the Zachariah's in order. If not let me know moving them is easy.
