    3. Brenda, I have no proof of this; but I have that Moore Matlock Jr. (son of Moore and Jane Powell) first married a Susan Smith about 1795 and had eight children. Then Moore married Lucy Knight 1810 in TN and they had Landon, Overton and Smith. Smith was there in 1840 and that is where Moore Jr. was... Don't know where I got this info.. 3. Winnie OK we may have an early spring here in the South, at least in Middle Tennessee. The Weather has been unseasonable warm, some sun and a lot of rain. My buttercups and tulips are already coming up and the cherry tree buds are trying to swell. Knoxville is about 225 miles east of me but if can get me a street address for your family I can send you a map. Washington County is another 100 miles or so past Knoxville along the North Carolina boundary. Tennessee and our major cities have great web site with lots of pictures, so you can get a look at the state. My uncle Marvin Choate and My Aunt Mary Matlock both taught in one room school houses that had a coal stove in the middle of the room. If fact my father and his older brother put their younger brother, John into the stove one day as a prank, fortunately there was not fire, but plenty of coal dust that took a day or two to come out from behind his ears. Keep on dancing Winnie My best regards Joe Matlock >>> winiford s bailey <[email protected]> 02/12/01 03:46PM >>> I appreciate hearing that the attachment flew ... all the way to Tennessee ... computers are a constant bag of surprises ... just think ... I started out in a little one room school house with a male teacher ... Mr Spagel ... We used chalk and small slate tablets. Remember, the Journal is a collection of collections, I just organized and indexed ... and put under one cover for easier reference. I didn't try to prove anything .... so you will find repeated information as it came in from various sources .... so many of them tried to prove their history .... so if two or three came to the same conclusion I figure that is pretty good proof. Matlock's ARE NOT of my family except by marriage ... it is on Jack's family tree. I would appreciate if you/all started using the individual numbers ... when you can .... pin down the person under discussion fairly quick and easy. Please find your number and send it to me ... Wanda and Jana are to be found in the DRIFTWOOD FILE. Jack is under 1.1.5.1.2. Ann MATLOCK and Ezekiel ELLIS ... so I think the next in line is 1.1.5.1.2.3. Elizabeth ELLIS married to Lewis RINEHART, received their licence to marry at the Carter Co Courthouse and lived in Buffalo Ridge ... near brother George RINEHART and ??? MATLOCK .... (Ann's sister) Besides you, the Journal has been sent to Wanda, Brenda, Shawn and to Jana .... Jana entered it into Shawn's web page some months ago ... but she lost the page numbers and the index in the process. I feel that you are a busy man ... still I want to use some more of your time ..... please ....I need some good news this morning ... tell me about the good things concerning Tennessee ... I do not want anything about storms. insects, weather, narrow twisting highways, ... only the happy and good today ..... the bad is for later. Got word last night that our daughter and son-in-law bought a home in TN ....... the word came from Knoxville by e-mail .... other then that she gave no idea where the house is. I am devastated to say the least. How far from Washington County TN are you ( especially the old town of Buffalo Ridge) ?????? How far from the Carter Co. Courthouse ????? I would like to learn about the one and get information from the other.... Still Dancing ...... but slower and slower Winnie S. Bailey Box 453, Scio, OR 97374

I believe that you are right that he was born out of wedlock. I think his mother was Mary Medlock daughter of John Medlock. I don't know Johns wifes name. If Mary was Garrisons mother that would make her my great great grandmother. We probably will never know who his natural father was. I am sure my Garrison and your Garrison are one and the same because my Garrison was born July 19,1820 and died Nov.13,1896. The information I have on the Medlock family came from records used by my family to join the DAR, UDC,Daughters of the Colonies, Sons of the Confederacy, Sons of the Revolution, and etc.If Mary is Garrisons mother what happened to her?????????? No records have we found of Mary after the birth of Garrison. I don't have any records on Nathaniel Medlock who was he? Garrison is probably buried in Clayton or Henry County Georgia. Joe Matlock >>> "David Nixon" <[email protected]> 02/12/01 12:29PM >>> Thomas Has to be The Father. I went back to Greenville Co 1830 Census and found Thomas , John , and Reuben again. Along with a Garrison Medlock and Rebecca Medlock. This would make Thomas1780 a son of John Medlock Sr, because of age, and Catherine as in the Thomas Maedlock History. But there is still a possility he could be son of John Jr. John Sr.>Thomas>Reuben Medlock. Could their be a chance that Garrison would be Child. Oh, I found Reuben Sr son Reuben in the same census except living with a Williams could be the same Williams family that Isham married into and my source says is close to the Medlocks and says that Catherine might be a Williams? Dont Know needs research. Also These Medlock were living in area as a Nixon from Greenville Laurens Area. To be Exact between Reuben and John on the same page. We know that Mary Parthenia Medlock married Abner Nixon. Also This Nixon ended up in Marshall County Ala were Garrison Medlock ended up. Reuben named his first child Reuben and his third boy Thomas, no John so far might have later. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joe Matlock" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 12, 2001 10:06 AM Subject: Re: I think you may be right enough to include the information in your chart with a note on your reasons to match them up, BUT who is the Thomas B. 1770 shown in Reuben's census tract. 2. I dont think Jemima and Lukes wife Elenor are one and the same.. Reason: Who Luke JR of 1806 marries is also of some question and has been debated before on ths list. My thought are as follows: JEMIMA ELEANOR8 CHOATE (JOHN7, SQUIRE THOMAS6, CHRISTOPHER5, CHRISTOPHER4, CHRISTOPHER3, CHRISTOPHER2, CHRISTOPHER1) was born 1810 in Tennessee. She married LUKE MATLOCK, son of LUKE MATLOCK and CHARITY CHOATE. He was born 1806 in Tennessee. Notes for JEMIMA ELEANOR CHOATE: In 1850 Jemima is living in Dickson County, Tennessee with her children E. D. and Absalom. Notes for LUKE MATLOCK: In 1850 this family is living in Humphreys County, Tennessee. His father Luke is also with them. In 1860 this family is living in Humphreys County, Tennessee. 3. I did not have the daughter Anna b. 1803 who married William Sooter in Barry County, Missouri, therefore when Luke (1766) is not shown in Humphreys county in 1860 the death is assumed. More on Sooter later. (I had all of the other named children) There is debate as to Charity Choate and given the family habit of marrying into this family in Dickson county from about this time for about the next 150 years I tend, barring evidence to the contrary, to come down on the side of Charity Choate as the wife of Like of 1766. By the way the Choate and Matlock families are still near neighbors in the county. Several of Luke's sons are in the war of 1812 including James B. Who Luke JR of 1806 marries is also of some question and has been debated before on ths list. My thought are as follows: JEMIMA ELEANOR8 CHOATE (JOHN7, SQUIRE THOMAS6, CHRISTOPHER5, CHRISTOPHER4, CHRISTOPHER3, CHRISTOPHER2, CHRISTOPHER1) was born 1810 in Tennessee. William came to Oregon with his parents in 1853, spent his boy-hood in Eugene, Or. where he was married and later moved to Umatilla Co. near Athena. He had a large sheep ranch, always keeping about fifteen thousand sheep, which he later drove to Montana and sold in Butte. After nine years he rented out his sheep ranch & moved into Pendleton, so his children could benefit from the town schools. He soon became a leading figure in business circles. Became one of the organizers of the old American National Bank also a stockholder and vice president of the First National Bank. During the mining boom in Alaska Mr. Matlock be-came interested and established supply stores in Skagway, Dawson, and Juneau. He built breweries at Juneau and Skagway, and owned considerable mining property at Nome, which property is still in possession of the estate. He acquired much valuable property in Pendleton, the first Hotel was built with his and others cooperation, and he later owned outright. He owned the opera house block, La Dow block, hotel block, & the block adjoining the Bowman hotel. He was chosen mayor of Pendleton five different times. He represented Umatilla county for two terms in the lower house of the state legislature and for twenty years he served on the board of agriculture as president. Like his father he was fond of thoroughbred racehorses and was for many years a familiar figure on the Pacific Coast Turf. It was in 1909, while acting as president of the State Fair Board, that he was taken ill with typhoid fever, the disease leaving him in a crippled condition. 1. [MATLOCK-L] Luke
    2. I show that Luke was born abt 1766 in Probably Halifax Co Va since that is where Moore was at that time.. and He died in Barry Co Mo after 1860.. ( He can be found on the 1860 census age 94 living with his daughter Anna.. Luke More than likely Married Charity Choate...But I believe she died before 1850 Humphrey Co TN.. The Charity Matlock that is showing in 1850 and 1860 I am not sure what her maiden name is yet or which Matlock she married.. You show Benjamin.Perhaps the Benjamin that shows in Davidson Co 1840??? This is what I show so far: Can you fill in the Blanks? LUKE MATLOCK born abt 1766 Halifax Co VA. Luke is thought to be the son of Moore and Jane Powell Matlock. More than likely Luke was named after Jane's brother Luke Powell. Luke's wife name is not proven. Luke's wife died in Humphreys Co TN between 1841-1849 Luke died after 1860 in MO, possibly Barry Co Mo where at the age of 94 Luke was living with his daughter Anna. Taking the 1790 and 1820 Census readings it appears there were at least 11, and maybe more children. With out a 1810 census reading, it is hard to say exactly how many there were. There is much speculation on whose Luke's wife might be, but since the name Edward is in his family, I believe his wife was a Choate. Some believe she was Eleanor and others believe she is Charity. A Charity Matlock was named in Edward Choates will dated in 1829.. 1829 Edward Choate named in his will a daughter Charity Medlock (in Robertson Co., Tenn. Wills, Bonds, Inventories & Sales Books, Volume #7, 1828- 1832, pages 482 - 486 Will of Edward Choate, Sr. - 28 August 1829 per Email from Sherill de Carrico 12 APR 00). 2. Joe Matlock
    3. OH!!!!!!!!! That Luke, I have four others. Here is what I have but not that many children only eight, I may have them but do not have them conected to Luke. Joe Matlock Descendants of Luke Matlock Generation No. 1 1. LUKE8 MATLOCK (MOORE7, WILLIAM6, JOHN MOORE5, JOHN4, GEORGE3, JOHN THOMAS2, WILLIAM1) was born 04 September 1766 in Washington County Tennessee, and died 1859 in Humphreys County Tennessee. He married CHARITY CHOATE. She was born Abt. 1768, and died 1860 in Humphreys County Tennessee. Notes for LUKE MATLOCK: "Although not definitely identified as such, appears to be the son of Moore and Jane Powell Matlock. He is listed as a taxpayer in 1787 in Washington Co. N. C., shows in the 1790 census of Greenville Co., S. C., is shown in Sullivan Co., Tn. in 1796 and 1797, is a taxpayer in Humphreys Co., Tn. in 1812, shown in Dickson Co., Tn. 1820 and 1830 and shown in Humphreys Co. in 1840 and 1850. His wife does not show in 1850 and he does not show in 1860. In 1829 Edward Choate named in his will a daughter Charity Medlock (in Robertson Co., Tenn. Wills, Bonds, Inventories & Sales Books, Volume #7, 1828- 1832, pages 482 - 486 Will of Edward Choate, Sr. - 28 August 1829 per Email from Sherill de Carrico 12 APR 00). Richard Choate tells me that The Humphrey's Co. Matlock's said that the Matlock who married Charity was the ancestor of all the Humphrey's Co. group. Luke would have to be the one. Also, Edward Choate, Jr. came to Tennessee from Halifax Co., Va. If given names have any bearing (and I think they generally do), Luke had a son named Edward M., Luke, Jr. had an Edward, James (son of Luke) had an Edward, Littleberry had a Charles Edward and Wm. (son of Luke, Jr.) had an Edward. The name of Edward Choate (a later one than Edward, Jr.) appeared on the 1810 Petition also signed by Littleberry Matlock. The children of Luke, according to census records, seems to have been about 12. Since they were all grown by 1850 many of them are nameless. Those whom, I identify are James, B. ca 1785 in Va.; Littleberry, born ca 1787 in Va.; Edward M., born 1808; and Luke, Jr., born ca 1806. Other good possibilities are Charles B. (served in West. Tenn. Militia War 1812. Resided in Dickson Co. 1815 and moved to Franklin Co., Ala.); Benjamn (1820 Humphreys Co. Tn. to Carrol1 Co., Tn. ) and Newell W. (shown in 1830 Limestone Co. Ala." 3. Hello everyone, Boy, the response to the Melungeon concept has kept me hopping... most folks sent queries like the one below. Lynn, I am replying on the list to get the word out efficiently ;) I am even more fascinated than before as I grew up hearing we had "Black Irish" connections..... The following is form the information on this site: http://rosecity.net/cherokee/blackdutch.html "The Melungeons live mostly in the Appalachian Mountains. They are people whose ancestry has been shrouded in mystery. They are most likely the descendants of the late 16th century Turks and Portuguese stranded on the Carolina shores. Sir Francis Drake liberated some 200 young Turks on the North Carolina coast. They later intermarried with Powhatan, Pamunkey, Chickahominy, and Catawba Indians. These two groups combined later, settled in the Appalachians, and with further intermarriages with the Cherokees. The word Melungeon is both Portuguese and Turkish, and meaning "cursed soul." Today, Melungeon descendants can be found among all racial and ethnic groups. Like the Cherokee, these people were not out to advertise the fact that they were Melungeon, rather they were trying their best to hide it. There are also many Melungeon roots in southeastern Kentucky families." Follow the links I put in my first post for LOTS of informative reading! It makes more sense than ever why our surname is such a tricky one to prove... Were they Native Americans (Indians) or Afro-Americans? I am currently working trying to find the parents of Stephen Matlock in SC, which may lead me to the Melungeons, although my latest clue is that the family may have been from Charleston and therefore would possibly have entered the country through the port at Charleston. Thanks for all the wonderful work that you and Shawn have done. I have enjoyed it and it has helped me so much. Anyway, who were the Melungeons and why were they called by that name? Thanks, Lynn

    1. [MATLOCK-L] Ishams
    2. I am begining to think that this Isham may be the son of the Isham that was in Botetcourt Co Va... And that Isham SR.. was born abt 1742ish to William Matlock of 1702.. Married Martha abt 1788, ( Could be a second wife.)... and according to Jess Armstrong, these were his Children: Martha, Isham, Charles, George, Polly and Claretta. I find it interesting that the Isham that went from VA to SC to GA to ALA names a son Moore.. and that the Isham in Botetourt there was a Moore that at the same time.. I think that Moore and Isham maybe brothers????? ISHAM MEDLOCK, born 1777 in Virginia. Married 1799 to Susannah Williams. They lived in the Greenville Dist. of S. C. and later to Gwinett Co. , Ga. Some children according to descendant were: John Williams, James Isham Henry, Moore, Nathaniel, Lewis Henry and Mastin DeLoney. After the death of Susannah, Isham remarried and went to Cherokee Co., Ala. He died here in 1852 and he and his son, Mastin DeLoney are buried in the Salem Cemetery at Cedar Bluffs, Ala. Isham does not show in Cherokee Co., Ala. in 1840. John R. (who is in Gwinnett Co., Ga. with Isham) does. John R. is in Arkansas in 1850. Isham shows in Cherokee Co., Ala. in 1850 as follows: Iceharn Medlock 73 born Va. Mary 52, born Ga. Didama 23, born Ga. Thomas 15, and Green T. 13 born Ga.
