Hi Again, Now I am confused, I thought the 1782 census in VA was Zachariah Matlock and Lucy Wash? No? Zachariah and Lucy are the 1830 in TN? Hi List I received this information from a PRINCE surname researcher and he gave me the following info. The 1782 state census of Virginia shows a Zachariah Matlock residing in Halifax Co., Virginia. This county is on the southern border of Virginia and adjoins Person Co., North Carolina. The 1830 U. S. census of Washington Co., Tennessee, Page 257, shows a Zachariah Matlock. Does anyone know it the ZACHARIAH MATLOCK listed in the 1782 state census is? Is he the Zachariah 1.1.3.5 married to Lucy Wash? If it is this Zachariah, does anyone have a copy of that census? Or know how I get one, I would like to have a photocopy of it. Lee-Anne Smithson Dahms New Gloucester, ME [email protected]
In one of the e-mails that was posted last week you stated that John Matlock, born 1802, married Mary Matlock, born 1804. I was wondering where you got the info on their birthdates. The 1850 census of Ouachita Co., Ark. shows Mary as a 54 year old wilow. Was the census wrong, or are you guessing at the birthdates? That would have made Mary born ca 1796. Joyce
Do we have a James JOHNSON on the list ??? In 1733, 1. John MATLOCK, son of William MATLOCK and Mary HANCOCK, deeded to his daughter, Mary JOHNSON and son George some land that is recorded in Hanover Co. Va. Last I heard from James was in Aug 1998 .... his line of descent started with Benjamin JOHNSON and Mary MATLOCK .... see the MATLOCK Journal for Marie MATLOCK Harris's pages on this couple. I hope James has found the Matlock site by now Otherwise I have his 1998 email address and will try to contact him. His lineage at that time .. Can someone tell me who Austin C. Matlock is? I had a question from another site... the person was asking if my Mary Polly Matlock was his daughter. I think my Mary Polly's [1782-1850 m to Thomas Littleton (Washington and Roane Co TN)] father was William Matlock who went to Monroe Co IN ca 1800. Also, where is Weakly Co. TN? Help, I am confused... Thanks, Anne
Hi List I need a middle name or initial for ZACHARIAH MATLOCK 1.1.3.5 (per Winnie) that married Lucy Wash. I'm sending away for the FULL PENSION APPLICATION FILE. Lee-Anne Smithson Dahms New Gloucester, ME
It appears that I was wrong about the family of Albert Matlock and the children I thought were his were not. Could they possibly be the children of his older brother John Matlock? I went back and looked at some of the records and the info that has been printed on this web site. John, Albert, and Thomas Leonidus Matlock were the children of John Matlock and Mary Matlock. I think John Matlock, born in Ga., married Mary ???, born Ga. in Tattnall or Gwinnett Co., Ga. They later moved to Talladega (I think) Alabama, and then on to Ouachita Co., Ark. John died before 1850, and his widow Mary, 54, was living with Albert, born 1830, and Thomas Leonidus, born 1837. In 1860 Albert was married and living in Calhoun Co., Ark. Living next door to him was T.L. Matlock. 21, born Ala. with wife Josephine 22, born Ala., daughter Nancy 2, born Ark. In 1870 Albert Matlock, 39, farmer, Ala., Calhoun Co., Ark., wife Sarah 26, and also living there was Lee Matlock, 32, Josephine, 30, Nancy 12, and John 4, both born Ark. In 1880 We find Albert Medlock, 39, born Ala., Sallie 28, born Al., Georgia A., 7, born Ark., John, 4 born Ark., Hattie 2, born Ark., and Albert Jr., 2/12, born Ark. Lee Matlock is not listed on the census. Someone said that this was another wife for Albert, but Sallie is the nicknmae for Sarah. As everyone knows, you cann't judge the ages on the census. You never know who gave the census taker the info. I have found several things about the Matlocks in question. I had thought Albert had come to Texas but apparently he did not. Also, I thought that Thomas Leonidus (Lee) Matlock, was married to Josephine Harris. This info was given to me and I assumed it was correct, but I have since dicovered it to be wrong. The Josephine Harris I was told was the wife was only 10 months old in 1850, and too young to have married Lee Matlock by 1860. I had thought that his wife was Josephine Boyd, and I have returned to that idea. In 1850 Celia Boyd, 40, b N.C., is living by the Matlocks in Ouachita Co., Ark. She is a widow with sons Elias 18, James 15, Elana or Elanie 11, and Martha E., 5. Everything fits as the wife of Lee Matlock except the name, which I think was a nickname for Josephine. In 1860 Lee and Josephine had moved to Calhoun Co. Living by them was Celia Boyd, and in 1870 they are living in another area in Calhoun Co. with Celia Boyd living next door to them. I think that if she was not the mother of Josephine she would have not moved with them and lived next to them. I think that the wife of Albert was posssibly a Wood. In 1860 Bryant Wood, 62, W M, Farmer, Al., is living with Albert & Sarah. I have found info in Ga. where there was possibly a connection with Isham Medlock. Mary Wood obtained letters of administration for the Wood children and one of the securities was Isham Medlock. Does anyone have anymore info on this family? Does anyone know who the father of John Matlock was? I had thought that maybe he was Isham but Isham seems to have another son named John Williams Matlock who married someone else and did not got o Ark. Joyce Moore I have never been able to find where Lee Matlock was in 1880, but the Thomas Matlock with wife Sarah was not the same T.L. Matlock. This Matlock was Thomas Matlcok who married Sarah Ann holder 8 Nov. 1860. Lee Matlock went by the name Lee, not Thomas. Also, Albert does not have a new wife as Sallie is the nickname for Sarah. Nicknames were common back in those days and I think that Elanie was the nickname for Josephine. I am going to try and find the list of nicknames to see what it lists for Josephine. As I have mentioned before, Josephine was supposed to have been Indian. I do know that in an old family biography she is called "an Indian girl" in one place and a "halfbreed" in another so I believe she was Indian. Does anyone have any idea what the maiden name of Mary Matlock was? Someone told me that they had found a marriage license for John and Mary in Ga. but I have lost it. They were married either in Tattnall or Gwinnett Co., Ga., I think. I think they were later in Talladega, ala before they went to Ark.
Hi Brenda and Paula I agree after reading over your census material this morning that Albert is not the best candidate for father of Columbus and James Erwin. In 1850 John is dead or gone and Mary is living with Albert and Thomas Leonidus. By 1860 both of the boys had married but only aged 7 years since 1850. I had also found Thomas as married to Josephine and daughter Nancy. Albert as A. B. and married to Sarah is new. By 1880 I am concerned Both have new wives (could happen) but Albert b. 1830 is now only 38 and Thomas b. 1837 is now 41. I agree that in 1860 the Medlock children living with John R. and Lucinda are grand children but whose? Your Thoughts?? From: "Macie Lewis" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Date: 1/2/01 7:19PM Subject: Medlock/Matlock Hello Joe, I retired in 1993 and decided I would investigate and find out who I am. An aunt of mine had joined several organizations where she had to have proof of ancestors being in armed services. When she died I came into possession of a box of disorganized notes, etc that she had collected and that is where I got lots of my information. I am still working on this project and had a lot of unanswered questions that I probably will never find the answer. According to my records John R(I believe Reeder) was born in Laurens County, S. C. on Dec. 15, 1796, died Nov 13, l862, on Oct 27, l819 he married Lucinda Mayfield who was born August 6, l802. Some records show her birthdate to be 1798. Lucinda was born in Gwinnett Co. Ga and died 1860 or 1862 in either Goodspeed or Cleveland, Ark. My records show their children to be:Sally-born 1820, Mary Ann-1822, James M.-1823, Laurency-1825(this may be your Lorena)William F.-1827(changed spelling to Matlock),John Washington-1829, Elizabeth Caroline-1831,Miles Jefferson-1833, Lucindy Jane-1835,Battle W.-1837, Samantha and Damantha(twins)-1839, Giles Matison-1842, Alexander Pinto-1845,Nancy Ann-`1847(notes indicate of the 15 children 7 spelled the name Matlock, 8 retained Medlock. John Reeder and Lucinda Medlock is supposed to have raised Garrison Gibson Medlock (their grandson) who was born in 1820, out of wedlock. I believe they had a daughter named Mary who was probably Garrison's mother, but nothing can be found on her. Back during that day & time the worst shame one could bring on their family was to have a child out of wedlock. (my, how times have changed). Garrison Gibson Medlock was my great grandfather, his son George Benjamin Davis Medlock, born in Lovejoy, Clayton County, Ga -died Aug 14, l947, was my grandfather. He married my grandmother, Ophelia Caroline Hamilton, born Aug 17, l870 in Lovejoy, GA, died Aug. 1961, they are both buried in Jonesboro Cemetary, Jonesboro,Clayton Co. GA. I read an archived inquiry (dated August 23, 2000)--about Matlocks buried in a Texas. I am a descendant of the James Ervin Matlock buried in Ethel Cemetery in Grayson County, Texas and have been trying to compile the history of that line. The family history that was handed down to me is that Lucy, Gus, Columbus Franklin and James Ervin were the children of James and Elizabeth Matlock. James Ervin was born at Hampton, Ark, Jan 28, 1858, died Nov 11, 1933. He and Columbus Franklin are buried in the Ethel Cemetery in Grayson County, TX. According to the tombstone, Columbus was born in 1855 and died in 1935. I don't know anything about the other two children other than it is believed that Lucy married a Bryant. James Ervin married Mary Jane R. Burgin, daughter of Jesse David W. and Martha Matilda Burgin at Ethel on October 7, 1881. They had 11 children, now all deceased. According to family tradition, the mother of James Ervin died when the children were still at home and he left the 4 children to his sister to raise. In the Matlock encyclopedia that is online, a James M. Matlock born Nov. 20, 1823 married and had four children in Arkansas - Lucy, Gus, Columbus and Irving. His wife died and he left all four of the children with Semantha Medlock Ballard, his sister who had no children. This could possibly be the family. I found in the Arkansas Census of 1870 for Bradley County a Moreton and Cimantha Ballard who had living with them Columbus Matlock, age 14 and Lucy, age 18. Haven't yet identified Gus and James Ervin in this census. I am wondering if this James M, is not the son of John R. Matlock who married Lucinda Mayfield. The author of the Encyclopedia thought that he was. If anyone else has any further information on this line I would appreciate it. ==== MATLOCK Mailing List ==== To find out who has homepages on the Gerards, visit this link http://www.surnameweb.org/ ~ if you have a website, be sure to post an ad letting us all know it on this site; TIP; use multiple spellings! ==== MATLOCK Mailing List ==== To UNSUBSCRIBE from this list, email [email protected], use no subject line and write only the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the message body. I have the marriage record of a Thomas B. MATTOCK to ELIZABETH McKINNEY on the very same date in Wright Co. Missouri. Coincidence or an error!?! EMAIL received 31 Jan 2001 form Lem Guthert Joe, After a little more work, I have broken the tie with Thomas B. Matlock son of Isom Matlock. In the Census record for 1870, Thomas Jefferson Matlock says his father was born in Kentucky, not Missouri. Now, I need to pursue those records more. Older family members report that Thomas B. Matlock's wife was Betsy Ann McKinney not Elizabeth. Coincidence or not it just doesn't fit. The birth dates are skewed as well. Will let you know if I find something more concrete. GA. My mother was their daughter, Winnie Davis Medlock Brown, born Mar 11, 1907, died notes and documents to sort to find out who some names that appear in them are.
Hi Curtis I don't have a Sallie Ellis but if you have a date for her I have several Sallies and Sarah's. The families are very connected, descending from a pair of ( I believe) brothers John Matlock of 1638 and William Matlack of 1650. Why one and not the other is one of the better discussions we have had on the list. The town in England is still Matlock but pronounced by local as MATLACK...other variants in the US are Medlock, who are also listed separately in some occasions and MATLICK some what rarer but part of the clan none the less. To find what you can you need to read carefully all of the forums and lists. I put everybody into my database as Matlock. It then sorts alphabetically by birthdate. This helps me to find individuals and keep duplicates to a minimum. I put notes in the text files to indicated how the family currently uses the surname and try to remember to change it before I send it out. UNKNOWN or NOT SHOWN are legitimate entries with any explanation you may need for six months from now or when you send the information out. 75 percent of all research, especially before the revolution, is educated speculation, published in hopes that someone with granny's Bible in an old chest in the attic will see it a share with us a "truth". Looking forward to seeing your results. Best of Luck Joe Matlock >>> "Curtis Miller" <[email protected]> 02/14/01 03:50PM >>> Joe I have finished checking out my database. I have about 750 people in my database and checked all of them on World Connect. I found many matches and, with few exceptions, the information we had in common matched. I made some minor corrections, completed some partial names, and added some missing dates. I have decided to go with George Matlock as the father of William Hancock Matlock since the evidence for this is strong. I added a few people to establish relationships I suspected but could not prove but, for the most part, it is my original source data at this point. My Great Great Grandmother was Sallie Ellis Matlack who married Theodore Scott Wonderland. She is descended from John Matlack and Hannah Horner. Many of the Matlacks in my database could not be found when I was checking my database. Apparently this Matlack Line hasn't seen much research yet. Before posting my database on Rootsweb I have a couple of questions. I see there is both a Matlack Family Forum, little activity, and a Matlock Family Forum, lots of activity. Are they connected? I have a problem with my Wonderland ancestors and would like your opinion. James Wonderland came to America in 1857 from Germany with six children from two previous marriages, two sons and one daughter from each marriage. He married Leanora Edmonds and had three more children. I do not know the names of his first two wives or which children are from which marriage. I have called them Unknown Spouse1 and Unknown Spouse2 and arbitrarily assigned the six children to them with notes explaining what I did. Do you know of an excepted way or bettor way of doing this? Thanks for your help Curt Miller

Winnie and others interested. My personal view (and also that of most others) is that you do not post dates and places of births on the living on the internet. The exchange of this info between genealogists is fine, how else would we have gotten as far as we have ? Remember that those who came before us where at one time living and now gone. Had no one passed their info on we would all be stuck with only ourselves. I hope that makes sense. Melissa What you see below is about all I have. You can contact my source persons and ask for furthre proof. I believe that you are right that he was born out of wedlock. I think his mother was Mary Medlock daughter of John Medlock. I don't know Johns wifes name. If Mary was Garrisons mother that would make her my great great grandmother. We probably will never know who his natural father was. I am sure my Garrison and your Garrison are one and the same because my Garrison was born July 19,1820 and died Nov.13,1896. The information I have on the Medlock family came from records used by my family to join the DAR, UDC,Daughters of the Colonies, Sons of the Confederacy, Sons of the Revolution, and etc.If Mary is Garrisons mother what happened to her??????????
