    3. Denise Some of the Gwinnett County Medlock information is already published and archived at Rootsweb.com. Even Mary Ann Light is in doubt but generally excepted. There have several discussions on which Littleberry is which and most agree that this is the correct one. If this Littleberry is not in this family I have not seen a persuasive argument for any other. Best Regards Joe Matlock >>> <[email protected]> 02/24/01 08:47PM >>> Hi Joe. Do you have any proof Littleberry Franklin Matlock ((b. (c) 1758 Halifax, VA d. (aft) 1795 in Wilson Co. TN. mar to Mary Ann Light.)) was one of the children of Moore Matlock and Emily Jane POWELL. Could you help me with this document. I saw the post about MEDLOCK's of Gwinnett Co. GA. I live very close to that area. There is a road called <<<MEDLOCK BRIDGE>>>> It is HWY US 141. Any way I've always been curious about this area. I know a cemetery in that area that has MEDLOCK's I will visit this weekend and get names and dates for the MATLOCK list. Thanks for your help. 3. Brenda Your argument is very good. If Jasper is 23 in 1850 then he was born in 1827 and don't have anyone lining up with that date or with Isabella as a wife. Below is my chart for John T. Copies of this book can be obtained from the Gwinnett Historical Society at http://www.gwinnetths.org/ The Medlock Family By Antoinette Medlock Johnson (Mrs. William Collins Matthews) John Williams Medlock is the only son who remained in Gwinnett County as late as 1847, when he moved to Atlanta. His father, Isham, took an active part in the early development of Gwinnett County until he went with his son, Mastin, to Cherokee County, Alabama, about 1840. There he is buried in Salem Church yard, beside his son, Mastin Medlock who married Mary Ann Johnson of DeKalb County, Ga. Lewis Henry Medlock married Marian McHenry Lansford of Oglethorpe County and moved to Washington County where he became an editor. He is buried in Mt. Pleasant Church yard, Emanuel County, Ga. John Williams Medlock lived for many years in Gwinnett County. In 1822 he married Sarah Jemison Ware, daughter of Thomas Ware and Sarah Jemison who moved into Gwinnett from Greene County. Eleven of the thirteen children of John Williams Medlock were born in Gwinnett County. Two sons were born after they moved to Atlanta, both dying in infancy. The John Williams Medlock plantation in Atlanta was on what later became Ponce de Leon Ave. and reached as far as the present site of Sears - Roebuck. Their old home was on what is now Boulevard at the intersection of St. Charles Ave. The family burying ground was near the corner of St. Charles. There those who died were buried, but when Atlanta began to make streets and building lots of the land, the graves were later moved to Decatur cemetery. The famous Ponce de Leon springs was on the Medlock property, and it was very popular for friends to gather there on frequent occasions "to take the waters". Many would drive from Gwinnett to see their old neighbors and friends, and to enjoy the spring. During the War Between the States all five of the sons of John Williams Medlock and four sons - in - law served in the Confederate Army. Thomas died as a result of the war. William Parks was wounded in both hands, the bullet remaining in his left hand until his death. 1. [MATLOCK-L] Re: Newton Jasper and borthers
    2. Joe Matlock
    3. John Thanks for the good effort. Most of what you had matches up to information that I had. If Garrison Gibson has always made note of being Illegitimate, and if he and Newton are brothers then why is the same story not found with Newton's family? Or did the parents later marry? Is Garrison's mother then Mary Elizabeth? Which John is the grandfather that raised them? Please stay in touch Joe Matlock >>> "John W. Turner" <[email protected]> 02/21/01 07:24PM >>> Hi, I really wish I knew. This guy is driving me nuts. I traced him from the 1850 census to (word of mouth) dying and buried in Paragould, AR. No Headstone or any marker of course. The funeral home who performed the services got tired of people wanting family history information and wasting their valuable time (costing them money) that she burned all her records. Thus ended my search for Newton Jasper Medlock. This is most of what I have on Newton: Private Co. C., 14th S.C. Inf. Enlisted at Tomotley, March 20, 1862 Paroled: Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865 On last roll September/October, 1864 Born: Greenville District Age: 34 (in 1864). Profession: Farmer Note: Tomotley was/is in Beaufort County about 15 miles NorthWest of the City of Beaufort. It is almost midway between the towns of Pocotaligo and Gardens Corner, not far off Highway 17. Source: Confederate service records NARS, Micro. 267, Roll 274 Newton Jasper was 34 years of age when he enlisted at Tomotley, Greenville, SC. According to his NARA records of "Certificate To Be Given A Soldier When He Receives A Furlough Of Indulgence" (which I take to mean a discharge), Newton was 5 Feet, 10 inches tall, Fair complected, with blue eyes, light hair and by profession, a farmer. Newton enlisted for a period of: "for the war". At a camp "near Petersburg, VA. on February 14, 1865, he received six months pay of $108.00 at the rate of $18.00 per month". On the Greenville, SC 1850 census: Age: 19 has Newton living in a household with Elizabeth (Medlock, Mellock ?) supposedly his mother - age: 47. He is listed on the Laurens, SC. 1880 census: Occupation: Farmer We do know that he left SC and went to AR. We are not sure of the exact route he and his family traveled, but do know that a grandson was born in Booneville, Prentiss, MS. in 1895. This grandson, Thomas Jefferson Medlock, later was also buried in Woods Chapel Cemetery in Paragould, Greene, AR. along with his Father, John Trainum Medlock and brother Wheeler Jackson Medlock. Wheeler was born 1900 in Haleyville, Winston, AL. Newton was buried December 02, 1920 at the Woods Chapel Cemetery in Paragould, Greene, AR. Newton's marker is either buried or indecipherable from weathering as to make it unlocatable. Wish I could help more but this is all that I have. I have been to the reunions in AL and plan on going again this year. However, they have yielded nothing about Newton. Memories have faded and nothing substantial has been handed down. There was a report of a trunk that belonged to Newton being passed to a family in Paragould, AR that married into the Medlocks. I have tried several times in vain for a response from these people, but they will not answer me. I have been there in person to the home, twice, only to be shooed away with false promises and upset people because I woke them in the middle of the day. I would appreciate any help that I can obtain on this man and his parental and sibling ancestry. 3. Anne I can help you some. My information also has shown Mary to be the daughter of William. The Littleton family has some information on their site. Weakley county is located in upper West Tennessee. The county seat is Martin. I believe they have a TNGEN web site. Joe Matlock >>> <[email protected]> 02/18/01 04:08PM >>> Can someone tell me who Austin C. Matlock is? I had a question from another site... the person was asking if my Mary Polly Matlock was his daughter. I think my Mary Polly's [1782-1850 m to Thomas Littleton (Washington and Roane Co TN)] father was William Matlock who went to Monroe Co IN ca 1800. Also, where is Weakly Co. TN? Help, I am confused... 1. Re: [MATLOCK-L] Albert Matlock
    2. Joe Matlock
    3. Joyce It would seem to be more than just Sarah's age as Albert is also incorrect. Most of the census takers were at least trying to be correct and we have caught family fudgeing on their age. The information was susposed to come from the head of the household and few of them had little reason to lie. I believe you are on the right track. Keep up the good work. Best Regards Joe Matlock >>> joyce moore <[email protected]> 02/16/01 10:53PM >>> It appears that I was wrong about the family of Albert Matlock and the children I thought were his were not. Could they possibly be the children of his older brother John Matlock? I went back and looked at some of the records and the info that has been printed on this web site. John, Albert, and Thomas Leonidus Matlock were the children of John Matlock and Mary Matlock. I think John Matlock, born in Ga., married Mary ???, born Ga. in Tattnall or Gwinnett Co., Ga. They later moved to Talladega (I think) Alabama, and then on to Ouachita Co., Ark. John died before 1850, and his widow Mary, 54, was living with Albert, born 1830, and Thomas Leonidus, born 1837. In 1860 Albert was married and living in Calhoun Co., Ark. Living next door to him was T.L. Matlock. 21, born Ala. with wife Josephine 22, born Ala., daughter Nancy 2, born Ark. In 1870 Albert Matlock, 39, farmer, Ala., Calhoun Co., Ark., wife Sarah 26, and also living there was Lee Matlock, 32, Josephine, 30, Nancy 12, and John 4, both born Ark. In 1880 We find Albert Medlock, 39, born Ala., Sallie 28, born Al., Georgia A., 7, born Ark., John, 4 born Ark., Hattie 2, born Ark., and Albert Jr., 2/12, born Ark. Lee Matlock is not listed on the census. Someone said that this was another wife for Albert, but Sallie is the nicknmae for Sarah. As everyone knows, you cann't judge the ages on the census. You never know who gave the census taker the info. I have found several things about the Matlocks in question. I had thought Albert had come to Texas but apparently he did not. Also, I thought that Thomas Leonidus (Lee) Matlock, was married to Josephine Harris. This info was given to me and I assumed it was correct, but I have since dicovered it to be wrong. The Josephine Harris I was told was the wife was only 10 months old in 1850, and too young to have married Lee Matlock by 1860. I had thought that his wife was Josephine Boyd, and I have returned to that idea. In 1850 Celia Boyd, 40, b N.C., is living by the Matlocks in Ouachita Co., Ark. She is a widow with sons Elias 18, James 15, Elana or Elanie 11, and Martha E., 5. Everything fits as the wife of Lee Matlock except the name, which I think was a nickname for Josephine. In 1860 Lee and Josephine had moved to Calhoun Co. Living by them was Celia Boyd, and in 1870 they are living in another area in Calhoun Co. with Celia Boyd living next door to them. I think that if she was not the mother of Josephine she would have not moved with them and lived next to them. I think that the wife of Albert was posssibly a Wood. In 1860 Bryant Wood, 62, W M, Farmer, Al., is living with Albert & Sarah. I have found info in Ga. where there was possibly a connection with Isham Medlock. Mary Wood obtained letters of administration for the Wood children and one of the securities was Isham Medlock. Does anyone have anymore info on this family? Does anyone know who the father of John Matlock was? I had thought that maybe he was Isham but Isham seems to have another son named John Williams Matlock who married someone else and did not got o Ark. Joyce Moore I have never been able to find where Lee Matlock was in 1880, but the Thomas Matlock with wife Sarah was not the same T.L. Matlock. This Matlock was Thomas Matlcok who married Sarah Ann holder 8 Nov. 1860. Lee Matlock went by the name Lee, not Thomas. Also, Albert does not have a new wife as Sallie is the nickname for Sarah. Nicknames were common back in those days and I think that Elanie was the nickname for Josephine. I am going to try and find the list of nicknames to see what it lists for Josephine. As I have mentioned before, Josephine was supposed to have been Indian. I do know that in an old family biography she is called "an Indian girl" in one place and a "halfbreed" in another so I believe she was Indian. Does anyone have any idea what the maiden name of Mary Matlock was? Someone told me that they had found a marriage license for John and Mary in Ga. but I have lost it. They were married either in Tattnall or Gwinnett Co., Ga., I think. I think they were later in Talladega, ala before they went to Ark. ==== MATLOCK Mailing List ==== Check out US GENWEB for surnames, info by county or country and more! http://www.usgenweb.net/ ~ Also see the World GENWEB Project for international queries http://www.worldgenweb.org/ TIP:use multiple spellings!

    3. John Thanks so much for your resonse with information. I have posted it to my datbase and the dates match up from other sources. Does your family have any ideas about Isham's parents? Best Regards Joe Matlock >>> "jcmedlock" <[email protected]> 02/21/01 08:57AM >>> Just in case you don't see this on the Genforum: Here is some additional information about Isham Medlock (Matlock?) and his descendants excerpted from p. 555-556 of James C. Flanigan's _History of Gwinnett County, Georgia_ published in 1959. Copies of this book can be obtained from the Gwinnett Historical Society at http://www.gwinnetths.org/ My father, W. Harold Medlock, has much more information about this line as well. The Medlock Family By Antoinette Medlock Johnson (Mrs. William Collins Matthews) When Gwinnett County was formed in 1818, Isham Medlock was listed as one of its pioneers. He was born in Virginia, in 1777, and went to South Carolina, as a boy. He married Susannah, the daughter of Lewis Williams, a Revolutionary soldier and a Virginian. Isham and Susannah came to Franklin County, Ga., sometime between 1803 and 1811, for their son, John Williams was born April 4, 1803 in South Carolina, and Lewis Henry was born Nov. 3, 1811 in Franklin County, Ga. There were other children besides these two, but only other known is Mastin D., who was born Sept. 9, 1814 and died Oct. 6, 1854. John Williams Medlock is the only son who remained in Gwinnett County as late as 1847, when he moved to Atlanta. Those who lived to maturity were: Thomas Landrum Delony Medlock, Nov. 22, 1823 - Feb. 26, 1864, married Rebecca Ballenger. Many of their descendants are living in Gwinnett now. Susannah Eliza Medlock, Aug. 18, 1826 - Jan. 31, 1880, married Fletcher Tilley of DeKalb Co. James Isham Henry Medlock, Mar. 12, 1828 - Dec. 1, 1850, married Caroline Alethia Wrenn. They were en route to California during the Gold Rush when he died and was buried at sea. One of his three sons, William Joseph Thomas, survived him and became a minister in Louisiana. He has prominent descendants in Louisiana and Tennessee. John Oliver Medlock, Aug. 26, 1830 - June 21, 1911, married Elizabeth Carroll, and like his brother Thomas, has many well - known descendants in Gwinnett Co. Robert Medlock, Dec. 31, 1832 - April 24, 1919, married Adeline Smith and also has many prominent descendants in Gwinnett Co. Martha Margaret Ann Medlock, Jan 31, 1834 - Dec. 11, 1893, married James Littleton Terry, a Methodist minister. They moved to Longview, Texas. William Parks Medlock, the seventh child of Sarah Jemison Ware and John Williams Medlock, was named for the Rev. William Parks, a minister who is well remembered for his splendid work in spreading the Gospel in those pioneer days. William Parks Medlock was a young boy when his parents moved to Atlanta. He married Vilenah Antoinette Mason, daughter of William Pinckney Mason and Maryann Amanda Chandler, of DeKalb Co. Medlock Road and the William Parks Medlock School are lasting memorials in DeKalb Co. of this native of Gwinnett. He was born June 6, 1837 and died March 26, 1903, and is buried in Decatur cemetery on the lot with his parents. Eli Wren Medlock, Aug. 26, 1839 - Aug. 31, 1904, married Martha Edmonson, and lived in Cobb Co. Sarah Jemison Medlock, April b, 1841 - March 16, 1914, married Benjamin Franklin Walker, whose farm was what is now Piedmont Park and whose old home was made into the Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta. Caroline Medlock, March 4, 1843 - April 1896, married Pleasant Wade Merritt and is the only child who lived to maturity who left no descendants. Georgia Ann Medlock, April 12, 1846 - March 24, 1916, married Joel Yarborough of Fulton Co. Written for Volume II of The History of Gwinnett County from information found in the Federal censuses, county records, cemetery and Bible records, and reminiscences of Medlock descendants, by a granddaughter of William Parks Medlock, Antoinette Medlock Johnson (Mrs. Wm. Collins Matthews).
