Dear List: I just received a photo of 5 of Garrison Gibson MEDLOCK's children: Mary Frances MEDLOCK Thomas, Temperance Clarencetine MEDLOCK Brown, Mollie MEDLOCK Wallace, James Garrison MEDLOCK, and John Reeder MEDLOCK. I don't have Mary Frances listed as one of the children's names so I'm trying to pinpoint exactly which sister she is. No idea when the photo was taken but two of the sisters were visiting in Albertville, AL from GA and I'm betting it was the early 1900s. If you'd like for me to send you an attachment of the photo, please contact me at [email protected] Thanks! Brenda Here is what little I have on George 3 Mar 1795. I have no information of his family. If James William is a son then this would tie things up nicely in Kentucky. Could Daniel Lane be a brother in law to George?? How did James William get to be Medlock?? I am sending a copy to the list to see if anyone else has an idea.... Hi Joe, You are welcome... FYI, I am in the middle of what is turning out to be a "math challenge" involving comparing the data of the three censuses that mention Richard in NC and TN... 1790, 1800 and 1830 (apparently 1820 was incomplete and did not include him???). In any case, I am trying to see what clues I can glean out of "who might be attached to whom" as a result. Obviously the whole thing will merely set the stage for a further need to find documentation, but it is proving to be intriguing! Let me know if you (or anyone else on the list) want a copy of the word .doc I have generated as a result - the more eyes looking the better! Obviously, I will have to send it off list as the list can't handle attachments... Here's to piecing together the puzzle, bit by bit! ----- Original Message ----- From: jcooper To: [email protected] Sent: Friday, March 16, 2001 7:37 PM Subject: William Frederick Matlocks parents While researching my great-grandfather, John W. Matlock born 1838,(son of Micajah Matlock, son of Elisha Hosea Matlock (that's as far as I go with proof), think his father was Nicholas, son of John Matlock and Hester Watson), I received information on my John W. Matlock and his family from the Oregon State Archives in March, 2000. With the material that was sent to me was a petition and decree for registration of birth for William Frederick Matlock, race is white, resident of Oregon, living at 1508 E. 12th St., City of The Dalles, born at Worthington in the State of Indiana, 30th day of March in the year 1890. The petitioner's father was William L. Matlock, of the City of Worthington, State of Indiana, born in1851 and the petitioner's mother was Nancy Jane Matlock, whose maiden name was Nancy Jane Winters and who was born in Ireland in 1856, resident of Worthington, Indiana. Both of these documents were dated in 1948. Copies of these documents can be obtained through the Oregon State Archives. Winnie, how can I get a copy of your Matlock journal you referred to in your post? Thanks. Janet Matlock Cooper. [email protected]

Dear Shawn, I am not much of a computer person so I have to ask a question. Last evening I did a search on your page on the surname Garrison. Several items popped up. The first was John Garrison which was written in blue and underlined as though you could click on this and go to the item on your pages. Not so for me. ALways at this step a message comes that page cannot be displayed. Do you have this step blocked or does rootsweb block it or maybe I'm doing something wrong? When talking to Brenda Avila, I asked her and she tried and came with the same page cannot be displayed. What can I do to go farther after I do a search? I also tried to enter the url shown at the bottom of each item displayed on the search but that comes up page cannot be displayed. Thanks so much for your answer as this was puzzling me as much as these Medlocks. Terry Gladfelter [email protected] Terry, Sorry, I am in the process of moving some of my data to a different website so that the search engine on the Matlock site does not catalog it. Hopefully I will get it back right real soon. Shawn

Hi Just wanted everyone to know that I have a new Email address. It is: [email protected]
Paula I am putting a copy of this on the family list as your research if you can setablish a relationship between James M. of 1823 and James Ervin of 1855, that will touch a lot of family. I am posting my chart of James M. with the note sent to me about it. If you make this connection your use of Medlock and Matlock will be of much help. Please let us all know what you find. Good Luck - Let me know if I can be of help Joe Matlock Descendants of John R. Medlock Generation No. 1 1. JOHN R.1 MEDLOCK was born 15 December 1796 in South Carolina, and died 13 November 1862. He married LUCINDA MAYFIELD 27 October 1819 in Gwinnett County, Georgia. She was born 06 August 1802 in Gwinnett County, Georgia, and died 1860 in Arkansas. Notes for JOHN R. MEDLOCK: This family is sometimes listed as MEDLOCK. In 1850 this family is living in Bradley County, Arkansas. From: "Macie Lewis" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Date: 1/2/01 7:19PM Subject: Medlock/Medlock Hello Joe, I retired in 1993 and decided I would investigate and find out who I am. An aunt of mine had joined several organizations where she had to have proof of ancestors being in armed services. When she died I came into possession of a box of disorganized notes, etc that she had collected and that is where I got lots of my information. I am still working on this project and had a lot of unanswered questions that I probably will never find the answer. According to my records John R(I believe Reeder) was born in Laurens County, S. C. on Dec. 15, 1796, died Nov 13, l862, on Oct 27, l819 he married Lucinda Mayfield who was born August 6, l802. Some records show her birthdate to be 1798. Lucinda was born in Gwinnett Co. Ga and died 1860 or 1862 in either Goodspeed or Cleveland, Ark. My records show their children to be:Sally-born 1820, Mary Ann-1822, James M.-1823, Laurency-1825(this may be your Lorena)William F.-1827(changed spelling to Medlock),John Washington-1829, Elizabeth Caroline-1831,Miles Jefferson-1833, Lucindy Jane-1835,Battle W.-1837, Samantha and Damantha(twins)-1839, Giles Matison-1842, Alexander Pinto-1845,Nancy Ann-`1847(notes indicate of the 15 children 7 spelled the name Medlock, 8 retained Medlock. John Reeder and Lucinda Medlock is supposed to have raised Garrison Gibson Medlock (their grandson) who was born in 1820, out of wedlock. I believe they had a daughter named Mary who was probably Garrison's mother, but nothing can be found on her. Back during that day & time the worst shame one could bring on their family was to have a child out of wedlock. (my, how times have changed). Garrison Gibson Medlock was my great grandfather, his son George Benjamin Davis Medlock, born in Lovejoy, Clayton County, Ga -died Aug 14, l947, was my grandfather. According to family records, Columbus, James Ervin, Lucy and and Gus were the children of James and Elizabeth. (This was information that was passed on by my Grandmother, who was James Ervin's daughter.) Elizabeth died and he left the children with an aunt to raise. However, it would appear that the children with John R in the 1860 census are about the right age, and they may have stayed there before moving in with the aunt. According to an old family bible, James Ervin was born on Jan 28, 1858, and the tombstone on Columbus' grave indicates he was born in 1855 - no month or day given. I believe that the James that is the father of James Ervin is probably the James M born in November 1823, and the aunt that eventually raised them is the sister named Semantha. Anyway I shall continue my search and it is helpful to know that I definitely should include the use of Medlock as well as Matlock in doing so. ----- Original Message ----- From: Joe Matlock Sent: Thursday, February 15, 2001 1:55 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MATLOCK-L] AR Matlocks Hi Brenda and Paula I agree after reading over your census material this morning that Albert is not the best candidate for father of Columbus and James Erwin. In 1850 John is dead or gone and Mary is living with Albert and Thomas Leonidus. By 1860 both of the boys had married but only aged 7 years since 1850. I had also found Thomas as married to Josephine and daughter Nancy. Albert as A. B. and married to Sarah is new. By 1880 I am concerned Both have new wives (could happen) but Albert b. 1830 is now only 38 and Thomas b. 1837 is now 41. I read an archived inquiry (dated August 23, 2000)--about Matlocks buried in a Texas. I am a descendant of the James Ervin Matlock buried in Ethel Cemetery in Grayson County, Texas and have been trying to compile the history of that line. The family history that was handed down to me is that Lucy, Gus, Columbus Franklin and James Ervin were the children of James and Elizabeth Matlock. James Ervin was born at Hampton, Ark, Jan 28, 1858, died Nov 11, 1933. He and Columbus Franklin are buried in the Ethel Cemetery in Grayson County, TX. According to the tombstone, Columbus was born in 1855 and died in 1935. I don't know anything about the other two children other than it is believed that Lucy married a Bryant. James Ervin married Mary Jane R. Burgin, daughter of Jesse David W. and Martha Matilda Burgin at Ethel on October 7, 1881. They had 11 children, now all deceased. According to family tradition, the mother of James Ervin died when the children were still at home and he left the 4 children to his sister to raise. In the Matlock encyclopedia that is online, a James M. Matlock born Nov. 20, 1823 married and had four children in Arkansas - Lucy, Gus, Columbus and Irving. His wife died and he left all four of the children with Semantha Medlock Ballard, his sister who had no children. This could possibly be the family. I found in the Arkansas Census of 1870 for Bradley County a Moreton and Cimantha Ballard who had living with them Columbus Matlock, age 14 and Lucy, age 18. Haven't yet identified Gus and James Ervin in this census. I am wondering if this James M, is not the son of John R. Matlock who married Lucinda Mayfield. The author of the Encyclopedia thought that he was. If anyone else has any further information on this line I would appreciate it. ==== MATLOCK Mailing List ==== To find out who has homepages on the Gerards, visit this link http://www.surnameweb.org/ ~ if you have a website, be sure to post an ad letting us all know it on this site; TIP; use multiple spellings! ==== MATLOCK Mailing List ==== To UNSUBSCRIBE from this list, email [email protected], use no subject line and write only the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the message body.
