    3. Thank you Joe, And that looks like what I have so far. The only question I have is how confident are you of the Jason Sr., Moore, William 1702 lineage? It seemed right to me but Wanda was telling me that, while she lists the William father of Moore line in her charts, there are some who think that a John married to Ann was father of Moore. I've been trying to find more information to support either one. 1. [MATLOCK-L] Thanks
    2. Hello Family, Below is a letter from a new found member to our family. I have received many such letters from folks and it just makes my day when I see that we have helped another person. I pray it continues for many years to come. My, how our family does keep growing. I love it. I will be sending him an invite to join us on the mailing list. My heartiest thanks and gratituide to all of you. Thanks, Shawn Shawn, I must express my gratitude in putting together this website for all of us Matlocks.  My Aunt has been doing some genealogy work on our family for a couple of years. I recently got the bug and she gave me what she had.  I then chanced upon your website and not only confirmed what she had but found a whole lot more.  We are descended from those Matlocks in San Saba, Texas.  Andrew Jackson Matlock (b 5 Apr 1880) was my great grandfather.  Preceded by Jason Lafeyette Matlock (1843), and John Milton Matlock (b 1816).  This part of our history we are sure of. I believe what I have gathered from you website is that John Milton Matlock was the son of James Jason B. Matlock Jr. and Elizabeth Hicks.  And that James Jason B. Matlock Jr. was the son of James Jason Sr. and Fannie Rayburn. Before this I think there was some conflicting information. At one point I saw James Jason Sr. as the son of Moore Matlock and Jane Powell.  And Moore Matlock the son of William (ca. 1702)?  I don't know if this was ever proven though. thanks again, James A. Matlock Jr.

    3. Hello, I'm new to this list and was researching the list archives when I came across this series of messages between Joe Matlock and John Matlock around December 20/21 last year. I am the great grandson of the Andrew Jackson Matlock listed in this message and I have a couple of corrections to make: As the son of Jason Lafayette Matlock, b. 1843; d. 1911 San Saba, Tx.; wife Margaret Gilliland you listed Andrew Jackson Matlock b. 1872; wife Mattie Belva Herron. It is actually Andrew Jackson Matlock b. 1880 Spring Town, Parker, Tx., Died 4 Aug 1954, married 25 Dec 1902, San Saba, Texas to Florence May McCarty b. 11 May 1885, Mason, Tx.; Daughter of Robert Bruce McCarty and Florence Ann Whitehead. Andrew Jackson still has a daughter (my great Aunt) living in Texas today. 1. [MATLOCK-L] William R. Matlock, 1853, Illinois
    2. Linda Hubbard
    3. Since I read of so many others who have Matlock mysteries I thought I would post my latest findings and frustrations. I suspect William R. Matlock, about 1853, Illinois to be the son of William Matlock, about 1820 Tennessee. The elder William is found in Massac County, Illinois in 1850 with wife Camilla and children John James, Thomas B., and Martha J. Since William R. was born in 1853 I found someone kind enough to do an 1860 Massac County lookup for me hoping to show him in this family. Unfortunately he isn't there. 1860 Massac County William Medlock, 40, TN Camey,37, VA John J., 14, IL Martha J., 10, IL Maria A., 6, IL Henry, 3, IL Mary A., 8/12, IL Elizabeth, 17, KY William, 19, IL, does appear with this family in the 1870 Alexander County Census William Medlock, 53, TN L. Medlock, 40, AL William, 19, IL Julia A., 13, IL Ellen, 11, IL John, 8, IL M. Medlock, 6, IL A. Medlock, 3, IL Columbus, 1, IL William R. and the Elder William are both in the Scott County, MO 1880 census. My question is could William R. have been with another family in 1850? And if so, who? And who is the Elizabeth, 17, KY that appears with the elder William's family in the 1860 Massac County census? It appears that my continued research on this family raises more questions than it answers! I am finally working on this project again. We are remodeling our home and I am forced to stay home while the workmen are in the house. I am going to put the time to good use. I am formatting the pages for the book, Dickson County, Tennessee Residents, circa 1850, "Gon But Not Forgoten." I am using Word 2000 to generate each page. The outlines are the "meat" of the book. I would suggest copying and pasting the outline to your own word processing program. I don't think the outlines will copy exactly to an email, but I am not sure. In the actual book, each page # will correspond to the family # from the 1850 Dickson Co., TN Census. In the book each page will contain the census info, the outline, a brief notation of sources, a list of other families with the same surname, my questions (wish list for additional info) and a contact: me and/or the name, address, and email address of a direct descendant or an interested researcher of each family. I don't have direct descendants/interested researchers for every family. Please let me know if you are interested in any family that does not have one. If you are already helping me with this project, you will receive a copy of your page/pages before the outline is posted to the list. I need all the help I can get with this project. Please post additional information or corrections for any outline to the list. Be sure that the subject line includes the surname and the family #. Example: CHRISTIAN, # 1, 1850. If you are critiquing anything, positive or negative, that is not factual information, please contact me off list at: [email protected] . I would hate to bore the list! This is my first effort at such a large project. I know I will make mistakes. Please remember that I would not intentionally publish incorrect information. I consider this book a guide. Each outline will state that is to be considered only a guide. Each person should seek his/her own documentation for any name, date, or location, unless a primary source is given. For those of you who don't know, the misspelled "gon but not forgoten" comes directly from my great grandmother's bible. She recorded and signed the birth and death dates of her parents along with the phrase, "gon but not forgoten." This bible came into my possession when my mother died in 1995. I could certainly identify with that phrase, as I missed my parents very much, and since I can't spell worth a darn either, felt closer to this woman who had died before I was born. I am so appreciative for all the help I have received. From a single date to a zip disc (from Glen Russell) filled with his life's research, every item has been helpful. I have enjoyed "talking" with each of you and look forward to the day we can meet. This is truly a joint effort. Thanks again! MY MATERNAL ANCESTRY II DEAN MATLOCK HAILE GAHR BRINKLEY ELLIS VICK WOOSLEY East Tennessee Pioneer Families By Melba Wood 1987 Library of Congress Catalog Card Number: 87-70658 That reminds me, does anyone know a good genealogy WEB site for the Library of Congress ??? This is Melba's book that i used for the base of my MATLOCK JOURNAL ... as other information came in I added to this base ... I will state again ... I have not taken the time to prove anything I have received over the years ... if you find a trace of your branch or family in the JOURNAL and want proof .... it will be up to you to research further ..... Melba gave me written permission to use her book ... it is not copyrighted ..... I will take it to a Lazer printer and have copies made for those of you who are interested ..... I do not know how much this will run to ... but it is roughly 60 pages long ... without a cover or a binder. It is not INDEXED, It is not pure ... I see I have done some marking in it with an ink pen. I have snapshots of 1.1.5.1.1. Isham MATLOCK grave stone and his wife, Nancy HALE, as well as a few other .. photo's ...will slip a page or two in for photo's, if I can find them .... 3. HI! Guys and Gal's on the mailing list .... This happens to be Arbor Day Month .... I have been been asked to be one of the art judges tomarrow, we will be judging Arbor Day Posters, done by the school children. Later this month my students will be featuring their art work ... we are doing our "FAMILY TREE" in oils .... Exposing Our Roots , I wish you could see them ..... They have a rough pattern to follow otherwise the kids are free to express them- selves in shape of tree, background and colors. It is amazing the interest they are showing ... even their parents seem to be delighted. Beside all the little genealogy and pedigree ideas coming up ... at first some panick when they realized grandma or grandpa was dead, we got past that .... so now it's fun! fun! ... One youngster today, said "I LOVE TREES" .... well I do to ... I wish to offer this special POEM to all of you and especially to Jana ... THE FAMILY TREE By Jean Sailer Tell me, have you ever seen An elm branch on an evergreen? When oak and birch grow close and touch Does this affect their seedling much? If, indeed, a freak should sprout The whispering pines would talk, no doubt. Perhaps you think there'll never be That crazy kind of mixed up tree, But you are wrong. I tell no lie! Great branches reaching to the sky Have different leaves ... I guarantee. They'er growing on a family tree So if your roots have crossed the seas With mixed-up nationalities Don't be disturbed ..... new roots will take; Then when you give your tree a shake You'll realize the whole darn clan Is what we call AMERICAN! Still Dancing ...... around my favorite TREE Which is made up of: WILDER's, SHEARER's, KEENAN's, THOMPSON's, OHLEGSCHLAGER's, MATHWIG's, and DOMAN's In other words I' m a mess. Love You ... Wnnie S. 3. I recently came across the obituary for Solomon Matlock, Sr. in the online edition of The Paducah Sun. He died 7/8/2000 at Cypress, Johnson County, Illinois SSDI shows birthdate of October 9, 1934. His parents were John Ellsworth Matlock and Clara Zola Irene Little Matlock. I am pretty sure he fits in my husbands Matlock line but am not sure who John Ellsworth Matlock's parents were. Would anyone on the list be able to make this connection? In the Census record for 1870, Thomas Jefferson Matlock says his father was born in Kentucky, not Missouri. Now, I need to pursue those records more. Older family members report that Thomas B. Matlocks wife was Betsy Ann McKinney not Elizabeth. Coincidence or not it just doesn't fit. The birth dates are skewed as well. Will let you know if I find something more concrete. 3. John R.'s file is getting bigger. Here is what I had added to what you sent. Joe Matlock Descendants of John Reeder Medlock Generation No. 1 1. JOHN REEDER1 MEDLOCK was born 15 December 1796 in Greenville District, South Carolina, and died 13 November 1862 in Cleveland County, Arkansas. He married LUCINDA MAYFIELD 27 October 1819 in Gwinnett County, Georgia. She was born 06 August 1802 in Gwinnett County, Georgia, and died 1860 in Cleveland County, Arkansas. Notes for JOHN REEDER MEDLOCK: This family is sometimes listed as MEDLOCK. In 1850 this family is living in Warren Township, Bradley County, Arkansas In 1860 this family is living in Moro Township, Bradley County, Arkansas From: "Macie Lewis" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Date: 1/2/01 7:19PM Subject: Medlock/Medlock Hello Joe, I retired in 1993 and decided I would investigate and find out who I am. An aunt of mine had joined several organizations where she had to have proof of ancestors being in armed services. When she died I came into possession of a box of disorganized notes, etc that she had collected and that is where I got lots of my information. I am still working on this project and had a lot of unanswered questions that I probably will never find the answer. According to my records John R(I believe Reeder) was born in Laurens County, S. C. on Dec. 15, 1796, died Nov 13, l862, on Oct 27, l819 he married Lucinda Mayfield who was born August 6, l802. Some records show her birthdate to be 1798. Lucinda was born in Gwinnett Co. Ga and died 1860 or 1862 in either Goodspeed or Cleveland, Ark. My records show their children to be:Sally-born 1820, Mary Ann-1822, James M.-1823, Laurency-1825(this may be your Lorena)William F.-1827(changed spelling to Medlock),John Washington-1829, Elizabeth Caroline-1831,Miles Jefferson-1833, Lucindy Jane-1835,Battle W.-1837, Samantha and Damantha(twins)-1839, Giles Matison-1842, Alexander Pinto-1845,Nancy Ann-`1847(notes indicate of the 15 children 7 spelled the name Medlock, 8 retained Medlock. John Reeder and Lucinda Medlock is supposed to have raised Garrison Gibson Medlock (their grandson) who was born in 1820, out of wedlock. I believe they had a daughter named Mary who was probably Garrison's mother, but nothing can be found on her. Back during that day & time the worst shame one could bring on their family was to have a child out of wedlock. (my, how times have changed). Garrison Gibson Medlock was my great grandfather, his son George Benjamin Davis Medlock, born in Lovejoy, Clayton County, Ga -died Aug 14, l947, was my grandfather. He married my grandmother, Ophelia Caroline Hamilton, born Aug 17, l870 in Lovejoy, GA, died Aug. 1961, they are both buried in Jonesboro Cemetary, Jonesboro,Clayton Co. GA. My mother was their daughter, Winnie Davis Medlock Brown, born Mar 11, 1907, died Aug 1, l988. I believe this is probable a shared family. I have lots more notes and documents to sort to find out who some names that appear in them are. Let me know if you have any more information I can use and I will do the same. Macie Lucinda Jane, Battle W. ,Damatha, Samantha, Giles Matison, Alexander Ointo, and Nancy Ann use the SURNAME MEDLOCK. Matlock, Sr., is a member of the well-known mercantile establishment of Matlock & Haskins, which has done and is doing so much for the advancement of New Edinburg, and vicinity. Mr. Matlock is a Georgian, whose birth occurred in Coweta County, February 23, 1828, and is a son of J. R. and Lucinda (hayfield) Mattock, who were born in Greenville District, S. C., and Georgia, is 1796 and 1798, respectively, and died in what is now Cleveland County. Ark., in 1860, their deaths occurring about ten days apart. J. R. Matlock removed from his native State to Georgia, when a young man, and there made his home until 1834, when he moved with his family to Alabama, and ten years later came to Bradley County, Ark., where they spent the rest of their days. Mr. Mattock was an agriculturist throughout life, and while a resident of Georgia, carried the mail from Rome, Ga., to what is now known as Gadsden, Ala., and in 1836-37 helped remove the Indians from Alabama and Georgia to the Indian Territory. He and wife were members of the Primitive Baptist Church for many years, and he was a Democrat politically. The Matlocks are of Scotch descent, but his mother was a native of Holland, and lived to be one hundred and eight years of age. There were born to their union eight sons and seven daughters, of whom William F. Mattock was the fifth child. His school days were spent in Bradley County, Ark., and when twenty-two years of age he commenced to farm for himself near where he now does business. In 1866 he began selling merchandise at his present stand, being the first man to go into business at this point, but at the end of two years he gave up this work, and again turned his attention to farming, and was a successful tiller of tire soil until 1877. Since that time he has devoted his time and attention to merchandising, and besides his mercantile establishment he is the owner of 360 acres of land, a large portion of which is under cultivation. In 1853 he was married to Mrs. Amelia M. Tolefree, a daughter of David Meriwether. She was born in Jasper County, Ga., April 29, 1822, and was the widow of Robert Tolefree. Her union with Air. Matlock has resulted in the birth of the following children: Rebecca M. (wife of T. M. Boyd, a farmer, of Cleveland County), Anna D. (who also married a farmer of the county), and Elma S. Those deceased are: David M., and Carrie A. (who was the wife of W . H. Harrison, her death occurring in 1882). Mr. and Mrs. Matlock are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and he is a Royal Arch Mason, and a Democrat, politically. 1860 MEDLOCK WILLIAM F.
