    3. Yes but there would be no reason to call John Jr. John Sr. unless John Jr. had a son named John in 1704. He didn't have a son named John until 1712. > -----Original Message----- > From: Brenda Avila [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: Wednesday, May 02, 2001 9:41 AM > To: [email protected] > Subject: [MATLOCK-L] > > > John Sr did Marry again April of 1701 but if you go and look at > the book or records where this information is, it is Blank where > the name of the wife should be. 3. John Sr did Marry again April of 1701 but if you go and look at the book or records where this information is, it is Blank where the name of the wife should be. I have no clue as to where Margaret Kents name came from, But have seen it used as his wife by others.. I for one have never seen a land doc or anything else that names John Srs second wifes name. I have also seen where the first wife was Ann Moore/South or Ann South.. I would like to know where that came from. The Name Moore wouldnt surprise me for the reason of the 2 Moore Matlock that were around in the early 1700's. The one Moore, I believe the spelling was more like Mooar was in Hanover Co Va in 1734. I wondered if he was a son of John Sr..Brother to John Jr and Half brother to William of 1702? Perhaps named after his mothers maiden name???? I kind of believe that John Sr died before 1704 New Kent Co VA, On the 1704 Quit Rent Rolls, There are only 2 Johns in New Kent Co, One a John Mattox and the other John Medlock. There should of been 2 John Medlocks.. JR and SR in 1704, Therefore after 1704 when we see John Sr being mentioned as Sr, I guess since his father is dead John Jr is Sr now.

    1. [MATLOCK-L] me again
    2. I believe that I have written before about this, but here it goes again. Some people write me like I am some great genealogist or important person with all this sir suff and the like. I am a regular Joe. Allbeit a 5' 11", 350 pound Joe with a buzzed hair cut and a pony tail running halfway down my back and a hearty laugh. Mr. Matlock (AKA Sir) and my step mother live about 100 miles north of me. I work at a facility that destroys hazardous waste. So when you write just call me Shawn or Cuz and write like you would a close friend. If you happen to run across any good jokes you can send them my way as well, I am not easily offended nor do I hardly ever get embarassed. Next Item, I have been suscribed to a mailing list covering the ins and outs of computer use. A lot of it is over my head but I have learned tons about how my computer works. It even has links to free programs and stuff. Thanks to that list i have saved my computer more than once. Best of all it is free and no I don't get a kickback or anything. It is the best site I have ever found for this type of thing. If you are interested write me and I will send you the link to it to you. Shawn (AKA Cuz)

    2. Hey Gang, I noticed on one of the posts a comment about seeing info on another website but not remembering where or which one. If and when you run across these sites send me the address and I will post it on my site for the rest of us. Below is the link to that page. I would like to apoligize to all for falling behind on getting any other material out, but my job thinks I should be there more than on my computer. I have been working on a few items but they are not ready yet. What I have posted so far is the core of what I have. I also have a few photo's to post as well. As always I am ready to accept updates, corrections, photo's, etc. I have really enjoyed being a part of this list, watching how all work together to find the links we all need. 3. The other thing wrong here is the Marriage date for John and Hester, according to William Watson Will dated April 1689 William named his daughter Hester Medlock and willed her/John some land in which later, after John Jr died and Hester remarried Mark Anthony, this same land was sold: -"Hanover Co, VA, Court Records 1733-1735" by Davis: abst bk pg 13. P.36-37 5 Dec 1733 Mark Anthony of St. Pauls Par., Hanover Co.,planter, and Hester his wife to John Clayton of Williamsburg, James CityCo., Esqr.; for twenty shillings; 50 a on branches of Mattadequin Creek in St. Pauls Par., Hanover Co.; part of a tract granted to one William Watson late of James City Co., dec'd., by patent 8 Oct 1672 whereby sd. Watson by his Last Will and Testament bearing date 15 April 1689 devised to the sd. Hester by the name of Hester Medlock and to her heirs forever. Mark (x) Anthony Hester (x) Anthony Wit: Thos. Prosser, Ben Walker, Jam. Power So to me the marriage date of 1701 is wrong... Now the question is How many Children dis John Jr and Hester have before George born June 1701? Thats 12 years... 1. RE: [MATLOCK-L] William of 1702
    2. James & Celeste Matlock
    3. So you are listing William Matlock b. 1702 as the son of John Matlock Jr. in this case rather than the Sr. I've looked at it both ways, especially give the following information that Wanda shared with me: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: Abstract from "Register of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County, VA, 1684-1786": (1)Pg 21, Jno Medlock listed St. Peter's Parish along with Jam Moor; (2)Pg 373, George Son of John medlock Ju& baptiz ye. 8 June 1701; (3)Pg 374, William Son of Jno medlock baptiz the 19 July 1702. (4)Pg 374, Thomas Son of Jno medlock Ju& baptiz the 21 nov& 1703; (5)Pg 413, Jno medlock and (blank) married the 27 aprill 1701; (6)Pg 437, Anne wife of Jno medlock dyed the 23 march 1699/700. *Listed as Ju& and Jno. Only 2 children with father as Jno Ju&; George and Thomas and notice that Jno& son was born in 1701. Jno Sr. who had William in 1702 is listed without the Ju&. So I would assume that who ever wrote these in the Vestry book knew the difference between the two men. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- It is obvious that the last entry is for John Sr. father of John Jr. as it lists the death of his wife Anne. The other entries could all be for John Jr. or they could be a mixture of John Jr. or John Sr. depending on who the was getting married 27 April 1701. From this I can see two equally plausible scenarios. Scenario 1: George, William, and Thomas were all sons of John Matlock Jr. Their birthdays are certainly far enough apart for John Jr. to have fathered all three with Hester. The omission of Jr where John's name is mentioned in conjunction with William's birth was either an oversight or it was done by a different person than for the other two births. Also that John Matlock Jr. married Hester Watson on the 27 April 1701 and they had a son George three months later. Scenario 2: George and Thomas are sons of John Matlock Jr. Anne wife of John Sr. died and John remarried two years later to a younger person not named. This would not have been uncommon for the time. They had a son William the following year. John would have been 64, not too old to father another child. The use of Jr. in the registry was used to distinguish between the two John's. Unless someone has more evidence to point in one direction or the other I see both cases as equally plausible. Jana Black is working on the Richard and Mary family and has been kind enough to ask my opinion from time to time. I will be glad to send you what I have if you think it would be useful...Please let the list know what you find in Indiana... Good Luck Joe Matlock >>> "Vicky or Don Bagdriwicz" <[email protected]> 05/01/01 07:26AM >>> I was looking over this list. Does anyone have proof or why do you think Johnson & Dorothy were both children of Richard and Mary Weddle? Also, how did you come to the conclusion of William Robert's parents? I am planning another trip to Jackson Co, IN and would like to research this further. William Robert Matlock is my g-g-grandfather. His son James Ransom is my g-grandfather ,Roy Edwin Matlock is my grandfather, Donald Matlock is my father. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joe Matlock" < [email protected] > To: < [email protected] > Sent: Tuesday, January 02, 2001 11:47 AM Subject: [MATLOCK-L] William Robert Matlock > Good Morning Carlyon > I saw your message on Genforum and though the best way to respond was to post a copy to this list. 3. Joe and all, I re-read my post this morning and I guess from reading my post that I believed that everyone believed as I do...LOL.. I don't have proof that William Matlock Sr. b. 1753/1755 was son of Moore. I wish that I did; and my statements were said like it was fact... But what I posted does seem the most logical to me... I've seen where others have had him as son of William b. 1702 but I can not make that connection either. I guess I thought that Moore and Jane named their first born after his father William b. 1702.... Since William b. 1753 went to TN around the same time as Moore it looked pretty good to me. My question!... Is their proof that William is son of William (1702)? Am I missing something? I know that my William & Sarah were in what is now Roane Co, TN before Jason and Moore moved there. I thought that maybe Jason followed his older brother then Moore followed.. Wanda

    1. [MATLOCK-L] Hello all, need a little help and imput.
    2. The last of May or 1st part of June, I will be having 7-9 surgaries and will be off work for about 6 months to a year. And bored to death, haha. So, I spoke with Shawn Matlock and Ernie Matlock, and ask what they thought about it if I organize a Family Reunion, for the Matlock's, Matlack's and Medlock's , while I am off work, to keep me out of trouble. What do you all think? Here is a first outline, any comments appreciated, as I am just in the getting ready, to get started stages. It will be in Las Vegas, Nev. abt. Feb.or March of 2002. This gives people time to save for the trip. And to get their Family Lines together and pictures, with copies to share. This way, I am sure we will all come away with a treasure chest of info. And tons of new realitives and friends...Let me know your thoughts and if you might be interested? Thank you for your time, comments and help...... [email protected] LYNDA

    3. Joe, I just noticed that you have my William b. 1755 as William James Matlock as son of William b. (1702). How did you come to this conclusion... Is there a court record or something that says that he was an orphaned child when his father died... William b. 1702 died 1767 and William would have only been 12 to 14 years old. If there was an underage child didn't they appoint a guardian for them even (their own mother) And where did the James come from? On ALL the many records that I have, I have NEVER seen the name James in connection with William. I have only seen this theory once and it was on a website but I can't recall where. Sorry I didn't notice that before I sent the other e-mail. Wanda

    3. Joe, In your post for children of Moore Matlock and Jane Powell. I have never seen a Richard Matlock before and on previous posts you did not mention him. Did you find proof that Richard was actually a child... This one child here really baffles me.... ix. WILLIAM MATLOCK, b. 1775, Tennessee; d. Carroll County, Tennessee; m. (1) NANCY SARAH; b. 1778, North Carolina; m. (2) WALKER, 04 January 1803, Roane County, Tennessee. This William that died in Carroll Co, TN can't be the son of Moore or William Sr. Looks like there is some confusion here. The son of Moore and Jane is William Sr. b. about 1753/55. William Jr is son of William Matlock Sr. and Sarah 'Sally' Unknown thought to be Sheperd. William Jr. left a will in Monroe Co, IN and named his wife Sarah 'Sallie' and children. The children he named were much like that of William Sr. William Sr. was born about 1755 according to tax lists in Roane County. You stop paying poll tax once your reach the age of 50 or 55. He was not paying a poll tax in 1814. Also, William Sr. daughter Mary Matlock that married Thomas Littleton was born about 1782 according to the 1850 census. So I doubt that William Sr. fathered a child at 8 years old... I have that William Sr. b. 1755 died in Morgan Co, IN Sept 1829. His son William Jr. was born about 1782 and died Nov 1826 in Monroe Co., IN. He married first Nancy Kitchen and second Sarah Walker.. 3. David I stand corrected. The reason we can find him is on this website. http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/m/a/t/Garry-Lynn-Mattox/index.html Apparently your Valentine is from Irland. And to all I am SORRY for the confusion. Joe Matlock David Terry Gladfelter sent me your message and I do have some information on this branch of the family. But first I must ask when did the name change? Is a desendant family using the "Mattox"surname? As you can see by this chart this family is well recorded except for Valentine and his family and a name change may explain why...We have been searching in the wrong direction. If you can add to Valintine then please do. There is also the "that Witt woman" question; if you have anything on the Matlock - Witt marriages please let us know as this too is a area of some discussion. This chart only has only two generations as three runs to thirty pages and will over load sytem. What software is your word processor as I might get an attached document to run. I am sending Terry Gladfelter a copy of this and posting it to the Matlock list as some one might have further information. Good Luck Joe Matlock Descendants of William Matlock Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM COOPER MATLOCK, b. 03 December 1762, Plumb Creek,Henry County, Virginia; d. 19 September 1829, Overton County Tennessee; m. ELIZABETH CATHERINE SEVIER, Abt. 1784; b. Abt. 1756, Rockingham County, Virginia; d. 02 September 1824, Overton County , Tennessee. Notes for WILLIAM COOPER MATLOCK: Family story is that William was at the battle of King's Mountain. J. Hoyle Mayfield ([email protected]) records this William as the one born 19 Jul 1702 but married to Elizabeth Sevier and not Elizabeth Witt. He also records William's first wife as Catherine King. This may explain some of the confusion in latter documents as to who was his wife. In the fall of 1788, Colonel John Sevier was arrested on a charge of treason, which charge grew out of his connection with the "State of Franklin", and he was spirited away to Morganton, North Carolina for trial. When the citizens of East Tennessee learned of this they became greatly indignant, and began making plans to go to Morganton to rescue the Colonel. According to the story as set forth in "The Lost State of Franklin", by Samuel Cole Williams, page 232, William Matlock was one of the six men, who under the leadership of Colonel Sevier's close friend Dr. James Cosby, went to Morgantown, North Carolina and obtained the release of Colonel John Sevier, and he was never arrested again on the charge. Apparently William Matlock was a man of great courage. He served as a soldier in the East Tennessee Militia from time to time between 1730 and 1794, and was a veteran of a number of Colonel John Sevier's campaigns against the Indians. He served under Sevier in September and October, 1793 in the Etowah Campaign, when Sevier defeated the Cherokees at the present site of Rome, Georgia. William Matlock also served as a soldier under Major James Ore in September 1794 in the campaign against the Indian towns of Nick-A-Jack and Running Water. On this campaign William Pillow in his autobiography which is among the Draper Papers states: "We marched in that position until we discovered the smoke from the Indian Camp; he halted and gave directions how we should act, he sent four or five men ahead as spies, the names of all of whom I do not recollect, I know William Matlock was one, and I think Robert Evans was another, etc." In the battle that followed the Indian Town of Nick-A -Jack was broken up. The records of Carter County, Tennessee reveal that the April term of Court in Carter County in 1797 was held at the home of William Matlock, and in the same year William Matlock applied for license to keep a tavern. He married EMILY JANE POWELL September 1753 in Halifax County, Virginia, daughter of EDWARD POWELL and ELIZABETH RANSON. She was born May 1731 in Halifax, Virginia, and died 11 December 1828 in Roane County, Tennessee. Children of MOORE MATLOCK and EMILY POWELL are: i. RICHARD8 MATLOCK. ii. I am indebted to Mr. James COFFMAN of Salem, Mo. for this information. There is also a statement in the back of this Bible, "We started for this Missouri on Oct. 19, 1839" ". Edith (Edy) Strange married Zachariah Matlock 12 APR 1780. Isom Esau Matlock was their first child. There are several disputes about which Zachariah Matlock was the ancestor of this line. His wife does not show in 1850 and he does not show in 1860. In 1829 Edward Choate named in his will a daughter Charity Medlock (in Robertson Co., Tenn. Wills, Bonds, Inventories & Sales Books, Volume #7, 1828- 1832, pages 482 - 486 Will of Edward Choate, Sr. - 28 August 1829 per Email from Sherill de Carrico 12 APR 00). Richard Choate tells me that The Humphrey's Co. Matlock's said that the Matlock who married Charity was the ancestor of all the Humphrey's Co. group. Luke would have to be the one. Also, Edward Choate, Jr. came to Tennessee from Halifax Co., Va. If given names have any bearing (and I think they generally do), Luke had a son named Edward M., Luke, Jr. had an Edward, James (son of Luke) had an Edward, Littleberry had a Charles Edward and Wm. (son of Luke, Jr.) had an Edward. The name of Edward Choate (a later one than Edward, Jr.) appeared on the 1810 Petition also signed by Littleberry Matlock. The children of Luke, according to census records, seems to have been about 12. Since they were all grown by 1850 many of them are nameless. Those whom, I identify are James, B. ca 1785 in Va.; Littleberry, born ca 1787 in Va.; Edward M., born 1808; and Luke, Jr., born ca 1806. Other good possibilities are Charles B. (served in West. The only question I have is how confident are you of the Jason Sr., Moore, William 1702 lineage? It seemed right to me but Wanda was telling me that, while she lists the William father of Moore line in her charts, there are some who think that a John married to Ann was father of Moore. I've been trying to find more information to support either one. Best, James

    3. David Terry Gladfelter sent me your message and I do have some information on this branch of the family. 1 1. 3. Please tell Winnie hello and thanks for ALL of her help. She has been a true friend and family Thanks Joe Matlock >>> "Jana Black" <[email protected]> 04/30/01 11:30AM >>> Hi Shawn, Thanks for sharing this! It is exactly the kind of result we were hoping for! What I want to say is directed to us all on the list... If you think about it, "family" is a "finite" thing. Whomever was born to whom is a certain, defined set of people. Yet family, based on various quirks (moving, lack of literacy, infights, even simple laziness :) often can lose its "sense of self" in just a generation or two. I know my own children get confused easily about "how they are related to whom" and if the facts don't get recorded, it will be lost info sooner than later. Isn't it marvelous that if we all keep on working on our family together, we will eventually all be pretty "familiar" with "who goes where"! I am reaching a point where I can recognize "family clusters" pretty easily. One of these days, I would like to make up a migration map of Matlocks that shows which groups went where... if anyone wants to pitch in on this, let me know??? Jana MATLOCK-L mgr. PS I am going to OREGON middle of next month, technically for the NGS conference in Portland, but in my mind, I am going mostly to meet Winnie face to face and give her a big hug from us all! We are descended from those Matlocks in San Saba, Texas. Andrew Jackson Matlock (b 5 Apr 1880) was my great grandfather. Preceded by Jason Lafeyette Matlock (1843), and John Milton Matlock (b 1816). This part of our history we are sure of. I believe what I have gathered from you website is that John Milton Matlock was the son of James Jason B. Matlock Jr. and Elizabeth Hicks. And that James Jason B. Matlock Jr. was the son of James Jason Sr. and Fannie Rayburn. Before this I think there was some conflicting information. At one point I saw James Jason Sr. as the son of Moore Matlock and Jane Powell. And Moore Matlock the son of William (ca. 1702)? I don't know if this was ever proven though. thanks again, James A. I am the great grandson of the Andrew Jackson Matlock listed in this message and I have a couple of corrections to make: As the son of Jason Lafayette Matlock, b. 1843; d. 1911 San Saba, Tx.; wife Margaret Gilliland you listed Andrew Jackson Matlock b. 1872; wife Mattie Belva Herron. It is actually Andrew Jackson Matlock b. 1880 Spring Town, Parker, Tx., Died 4 Aug 1954, married 25 Dec 1902, San Saba, Texas to Florence May McCarty b. 11 May 1885, Mason, Tx.; Daughter of Robert Bruce McCarty and Florence Ann Whitehead. Andrew Jackson still has a daughter (my great Aunt) living in Texas today. 3. Hi Shawn, Thanks for sharing this! Let me know if you have any special messages for her...... :) -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, April 29, 2001 8:46 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [MATLOCK-L] Thanks Hello Family, Below is a letter from a new found member to our family.
