Howdy Gang, I have been in contact with a newly found Matlock descendant. He has quite a bit of info for us and is working on a package to send me in about a month. He will be joining us on the list at a later date. He descends from John Shepard Matlock (1779-1846) through his son Rev. David Matlock (1819-1877). He has photos and even original pages from David Matlock's bible. He noticed that the name on the images from the records on John S. Matlock list his wife as Ellender, but the photos he has of her grave and other records list her name as Eleanor and is curious about who has the copies or the original pages. I must admit that I have not been paying much attention to the posts to the list and I would appreciate someone filling me in. When I get the package , I will try to get it posted as quick as possible. Shawn
I also want to say thank you for all the work done on this list. I haven't been able to make much headway on my husband's Matlocks but the list has sure helped. Linda _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Hi Brenda! CONGRATULATIONS AND KUDOS TO YOU & WANDA! EVERYONE!!!! This is a MAJOR piece of work and a HUGE boon to us a MATLOCK (whatever spelling :) researchers!!! (BTW, Yes, I am SHOUTING a bit here as I am soooooo excited about what Brenda and Wanda have done for us all!!!!!). We will link to the site from our MATLOCK FAMILY IN AMERICA site so that it is easy for everyone to find... I suggest you ALL take a look at this website where they have INDEXED all the first names of family members alphabetically then identified which state and counties the person can be found in the associated Census records... THEN they have put the MATLOCK census record online, state by state!!!! I have had the honor of being able to preview this site and I have been USING it to guide my work trying to trace these durned elusive relatives of mine!!! Soon, I hope to make a "progress post"... for the time being, I am buried in records and the "math" of hatch marks from census year to census year :) Onward! Jana Black List Mgr. Dear Matlocks/Medlocks, As is always the case, a find brings more questions. A "Medlock Book" has been in this world for years--so we were told. It fell into our laps when visiting an elderly lady on another line. We had seen a mention of Julia Hunt ever so often and thought she had written the "Book". To our surprise, it was started by her father-Thomas Mason Monroe Pickens (1866-1945) who married Emma Medlock. Mr. Pickens compiled and published his own family and must have started these Medlocks at the same time. After his death, his wife Emma and his daughter Julia Pickens Hunt, added to it. We now have to give attention to this work as Mr. Pickens would have known all the grandchildren of our James Medlock (1800-1837) and Sarah Sallie Jones (1801-1882). Emma Medlock (1867-1959) was the d/o James Travis Medlock Sr. and his 2nd wife Martha James Babb (1837-1927). She married Monroe Pickens 1891. So they would have also known Martha James Babb Medlock. This Family Book is just that, not a Bible. Each page is titled Family Record. The very first page gave us hope and a very big question. Written is James Medlock m. ______? West. Nothing else. We do not know if this refers to a first wife of our 1800 James or to the father of our 1800 James. I tend to think it refers to his father. The second page is James Medlock b. 1800 m. Sallie Jones b. March 12, 1801 on April 3, 1823.Then his 6 children which we know from et al deed. He and Sallie had only one son, James Travis Medlock Sr., our line. Photos and Obits were crammd into this book with no rhyme or reason. We have spent 2 weeks sorting to some kind of order. We took a copier to this lady's house and copied for 10 hours. Then next day made 3 more copies so it would never be lost again. Just think, it was in hiding for almost 40 years. Now to my question--anybody have West in your family line? Does not have to be in SC. 1830 census is the first we find our 1800 James and it says that he was born in SC. If the West refers to his mother, they could have been from anywhere. Our 1800 James first bought land in Laurens County-1823. Also first noted on the 1830 census in Abbeville County was a much older James Medlock. Those records in Abbeville for that time period burned. We have one later West connection already. Malinda Murff, d/o Randolph Murff, married Thomas West and they went to MS. Malinda's brother,Walderman, married Elizabeth Jane Medlock d/o 1800 James. She died and Walderman moved with their 2 sons to MS. Malinda's older sister, Caty G. Murff, married Silas Medlock (1798) who we think was a brother to our 1800 James. ANy West notes out there? Thanks, Terry and Sam

Howdy Gang, This came to me from a newsletter I get on history and other items. I thought some of you might like to read it. I learned a couple of new things. Shawn The Trail of Tears By Denis Mueller Some felt that it would be best that the Indians be absorbed by white culture. Failing that, they would have to be removed and relocated on the other side of the Mississippi River. It was hoped that this could be done peacefully by some, others could care less, as long as they were gone. But it was clear that the United States did not respect the land claims of the natives. John Quincy Adams spoke for the country when he said, "What is the right of a huntsmen to the forest of a thousand miles over which he has accidentally ranged in search of prey." On May 28, 1830, President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian removal act. One of the act's chief targets were what were called the "Five Civilized Tribes." The Choctaw were the first to be removed. Chickasaw followed them. The Cherokee lived on 40,000 acres of land that were the envy of the land grabbers. The Cherokee were a remarkable culture that had a written lang- uage, schools for their children, their own newspaper, and a system of government. None of this mattered to those who eyed the land. The Georgian's denied them due process of law and when they resisted the Cherokee were captured, beaten and sometimes killed. It did not make any difference that the Cherokee were peaceful and prosperous. The white man wanted his land. The Cherokee appealed all the way to the Supreme Court and won their case. This still did not matter to Presi- dent Jackson. "Judge Marshall has made his decision, let him enforce it," said Jackson. The Cherokee tribe became divided between those who felt it was in their best interest to leave and those who were pre- pared to stay. President Jackson declared that the Cherokee Nation ceased to exist and troops were sent to drive them from their homeland. It was clearly a case of ethnic clean- sing. So 15,000 Cherokee were rounded up and put into stock- ades, or concentration camps, and then driven West. The un- sanitary conditions bred numerous diseases so when the Cher- okee set out for the West, they were sick already. The march itself was awful as rain and then the cold made more of them ill. One private wrote, "I saw them loaded like cattle or sheep into six hundred and forty-six wagons and started towards the West. It was a 1,200-mile journey to what we call Oklahoma and the cold rain of autumn took their toll on the Cherokee. Many became ill and over 4,000 died along the way. The forced march of the Cherokee was an act of cruelty and greed. The Cherokee created a new civilization in Oklahoma but never forgot about the death march. The Cherokee were no threat to the people of Georgia but the land speculators wanted their wealth. The President of the United States, a man many historians admire, was little more than a war criminal. The "Trail of Tears" ranks with the sad- dest episodes in American History and until the Cherokee are repaid for their suffering and theft, there is no justice.
