    2. Joe Matlock
    3. Hi Sherill There were several members of the family in army and in the right unit to have been the "Matlock " Jackson spoke too. (His "whites of the eye" advice is borrowed from MG Warren at Breeds Hill). Do you have anything other information that specifies Smith as the one? I would love to pin this down. Joe Matlock >>> "Sherill de Carrico" <[email protected]> 06/13/01 02:00AM >>> Hi Joe.. I didn't quite understand your message about Smith. According to his military records and Elly's pension request from the Nat'l Archives he served from Sept 28, 1814 to April 27th, 1815 in Capt. Joseph Williams Co., TN Volunteer Mounted Gun-men, brigade of Brigadier General John Coffee. He was at the battle of New Orleans Jan. 8, 1815. Smith is my ggggrandfather. It would be neat to think that "Old Hickory" had spoken those words to him. But I'm satisfied to know he was in that battle ( even though it was two weeks after the war had officially ended) and was part of building our nation. Hurray for the Matlock's........ 3. Hey Joe, I knew I could count on you to finish out the tidbit I found! Thanks!!! I will be sending you a further compilation of what I sent last month as I get it into some kind of organized (hunh???) order. I have come to the conclusion that my line does come from Charles Matlock/Medlock and that he is a son of Ricahrd from the first wife. I have also found a LOVING family who lived in the same area at the same time and which may be the end to the mystery of who the first wife was... perhaps a Loving daughter, which is why they named their son Loving Matlocks??? I am not sure when I will get this all cleaned up as I am doing it between other stuff that pays the PGE bill in sunny California (eergh). Meanwhile, we can just give um all collective credit for stimulating Jackson :) Jana -----Original Message----- From: Joe Matlock [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, June 12, 2001 8:52 AM To: [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: Re: [MATLOCK-L] Did you know.... His securities were Thomas Yourley and David Allison (Was TN, Co. Ct. Min 1/1338). John Carter was the reputed father as shown when he was ordered to pay Ten pounds for the expenses and maintenance of the said child for 11 1/2 months past. 3. I now have a number for Edward Lane Matlock thanks to Joe Matlock of TN. Number 1.1.5.3.1.4. Edward Lane Matlock believed by Jesse Armstrong and Melba Wood to belong in chapter 3 as part of John's descendants, a possible son of Charles or Caswell Matlock Edward, b. 18 Apr 1817, Humphrey Co. TN ... another source says he was a native of Georgia, moved to Dade Co,. MO Marie Matlock Harris of AZ. said this Edward was a grandson of Judge Edward Lane, first Judge to serve the Oregon Territory ... so far we have found no such Judge. Edward arrived in Oregon in 27 Oct 1853 .... The Koger wagon train crossed mid Oregon that year, I have long suspected the MATLOCK's were in that train ..... or a similar one .... because the MATLOCK's settled at Pleasant Hill, we found a number of them in the local cemetery. Edward Lane County ... DLC # 1689, 296 acres at TI8s R3W and sec's 13, 14. At Goshen, OR. Heirs to estate are Caswell J.; Joseph DeWitt, James W.; Edward L.; William T.; Benjamin F.: and Sarah May. Marie Harris said she had much information for Caswell, son of John Matlock and Mary Merrick dau. of Rachel Merrick . [[At the time I found Marie, she was slowly dying, she gave me as much information as we could handle, it was mostly in her head, books, & album's .... as she never organized the material ]]]]] He, Caswell became a MORMON in 1828 before the Book of Mormon was printed in 1830 ... Marie said she had his "school of Prophets" "7 Lectures of Faith" - 1830 edition Book of Mormon. When the Mormons left Illinois and Mo. She says the MATLOCK brothers and related families ... the DEAN's, Moses & Arron, John PROFFIT and RINEHART families came with them to Utah ... The MATLOCK's and RINEHART's kept going west taking the family bible with them to the Oregon Territory. We find Matlocks in Whitman Co. WA, RINEHARTS in Dayton, WA further south and going further south we have MATLOCK's and RINEHART's in Heppner, and Pendleton. [[See the MATLOCK web site for Barbara Jane Matlock McRAE's story of crossing the Plains in 1874 and her / their experience and feelings about the Mormons even some years after the event. Barbara is Number 1.1.5.1.3.10.3. in my Journal, her story isn't in the Journal .... but it was in the Seattle Library last I knew. . Still Dancing ...... better stop here for the night Winnie S. 1. RE: [MATLOCK-L] Andrew Jackson Matlock, San Saba, Texas
    2. James & Celeste Matlock
    3. Joe, Sorry to have to bring this back up again. I was just going over mail from the list trying to sort out some of my own stuff and I realized after you corrected the wife of Andrew Jackson Matlock I should have had you correct the children. I think the confusion comes from another Andrew Jackson Matlock that had lived in Texas and was married to Mattie Belva Herron. I believe that that Andrew Jackson Matlock b. 1872 originally hailed from Arkansas and moved on to Oklahoma after his stay in Texas. His children were the ones you listed here. My Andrew Jackson Matlock son of Jason Lafayette Matlock had three children as follows: i. Walter Andrew Matlock, b. 30 March 1904 San Saba, Texas. ii. Una May Matlock, b. 1 Feb 1907 Rouf, Oklahoma iii. Howard Conrad Matlock, b. 20 December 1914 San Saba, Texas. d. 4 August 1994 Visalia, Tulare Co., California. burried in Grangeville Cemetery Armona, Kings Co., California. 1. [MATLOCK-L] Edward Lane MATLOCK
    2. winiford s bailey
    3. You filled a big hole for me, Joe, when you placed Edward Lane MATLOCK in with the children of 1.1.5.3.1. John Caswell MATLOCK and Mary MERRICK. I have known about Edward Lane MATLOCK for years ... he has been one of my dangeling MATLOCK's ... all those years, without a number ... to his name .... At last ..... he is no. 1.1.5.3.1.4. in my Journal ..... "except" I'm still not clear in my mind just who is the father of his father, number 1.1.5.3.1. John Caswell MATLOCK ............ ..... was he number 1.1.5.3. John MATLOCK ???? ... Melba was in doubt about 1.1.5.3. John, b. ca 1759 in Halifax Co. Va. being the son of 1.1.5. Moore and Jane. Melba just thought 1.1.5.3 John could be the Benton Co. ancestor as he was close to his brother, 1.1.5.4. Luke. . Melba also believed, John Caswell MATLOCK, 1.1.5.3.1., was born ca 1778 and m. Mary Polly MERRICK in 1803, lived in Benton Co. Your date for John Caswell MATLOCK, is 10 Nov 1786, a whole ten years difference. . I have two John Wesley MATLOCK's b. 12 Feb 1820. m. Julia SCHUYLES ( son of David MATLOCK and Nancy Agnes LEE, who may descend from 1.1.2. William MATLOCK and Elizabeth ... poss. xau of Valentine SEVIER) no. 2, John Wesley MATLOCK, b. 21 Oct 1832 & d. 5 Apr 1891 ... m. Elizabeth B. FLOWERS, 18 Oct 1846, Tenn. ( son of 1.1.5.3.1. John Caswell MATLOCK and Mary MERRICK) 1790 census gives William MERRICK, 1 male under 16, 3 females Caroline Co. Maryland Izrel MERRICK, Sr.; Izrel MERRICK, Jr, 2 males over 16, 3 under 16, 1 female; James MERRICK, 2 females; John MERRICK, Matthew MERRICK, 1 male over 16, 3 under 16, 3 females, all Talbot Co. Maryland. Thomas MERRICK, 2 males over 16, 1 female, 6 slaves, Charles Co. Maryland. George MERRICK, 1 male over 16, slaves 87. New Hanover Co. NC John Caswell MATLOCK, born 27 Nov 1809 went to MO. Book C. page 396, deed records of Benton Co. TENN. Shows Edward MATLOCK of Dade Co. MO on March 3, 1855 to have appointed Luke MATLOCK of benton Co. his attorney to receive all moneys coming to him from the estate of Mary MATLOCK desceased .... is buried near her husband near Sugar Tree, their trading Post, Benton Co. Tenn. "Mother" MERRICK, mother of Molton, James E. and Mary ... she is said to have died in Mo. at the age of 111. Tomorrow I attend my friends celebration Gladys will be 100 ..... it can get a bit lonely in your 80 and 90's .... I can't imagine being 100. By the way ... the Genealogy and Biography by General William Smith and W. Thomas Smith, pub. 1922 comes down (2) Elizabeth MATLOCK and John WHITE's line ...their daughter, Veturia White, b. 5 Jan 1833, married Dr. John DEVERGIE SMITH ( General SMITH and W. Thomas SMITH were their sons) Still Dancing ...... time to quit for the night Winnie S. Bailey Box 453, Scio, OR 97374
