A ticket agent in those days sold, among others, railroad tickets. The relatives if an immigrant could purchase a RR ticket for him in advance of his arrival. The ticket could be picked up at the agency office and the immigrant would then be set to travel to his final destination. Salem St. was close to the waterfront. There were several other ticket agents on that and nearby streets. You can find them in Boston City Directories if the period.
