    1. [MASUFFOL] Tarbell - Bond's Watertown - mentions John Tarbell of Salem
    2. Subject: TARBALL, Tarbell, Tarbel. Source: The Early History of Watertown, Massachusetts: Including Waltham and Weston. Genealogies of the Families and Descendants of the Early Settlers of Watertown, Massachusetts, Includes Waltham and Weston - by Henry Bond, M.D. Boston, 1860. p.598 TARBALL, (Tarbel, Tarbel) Thomas Tarball, supposed to be the progenitor of all the families of that name in New England, settled in Watertown as early as 1656, when he was about 38 years old. By wife, Mary, he had: 1. Elizabeth Tarball b.Jan 5, 1656/7. 2. William Tarball b.Feb 26, 1658/9. It is probable that he had at least two children born before he settled at Watertown, for Thomas Tarball, Sr. and Jr. were original proprietors of Groton in 1662; and Abigail Tarball supposed to be his daughter, married in Watertown Sept. 20, 1672, Joshua Whitney. John Tarball of Salem Village, admitted freeman Mar 22, 1689/90, was perhaps another son. March 30, 1663, Thomas Tarball and wife, Mary Tarball, sold to Deacon Thomas Hastings, a dwelling house and about 30 acres of land in Watertown; also, 4 acres of remote meadow in Cambridge bounds. In the Inventory of John Flemming in 1657, is included a house, etc., appraised at £25, "bought of Thomas Tarball." About the date of the above sale, he moved to Groton [Mass.] He was one of the four persons to whom 20 acres of land was granted by that town about 1665, for erecting a mill to be exempted from taxation 20 years and no other to erect a mill, except on his own land. [Caleb Butler - Hist. of Groton - p.36]. He probably retired from Groton to Charlestown at the outbreak of King Philip's War. He m. (2) at Charlestown, August 15, 1676, Susanna Lawrence the widow of John Lawrence, Jr. He died as early as the beginning of 1681; for widow Susanna Tarball was admitted to the Church in Charlestown March 6, 1680/1 and she died in Charlestown, Mass., Jan 5, 1692. Thomas Tarball, Jr., a proprietor of Groton, 1662 m. in Groton, June 10, 1666, Anna or Hannah ___. [note - Torrey, p. 728 has Anna or Joanna or Hannah LONGLEY m. June 30, 1666] Anna, wife of Thomas Tarball, Jr. was admitted to Charlestown church Oct 28, 1677. Administration was granted to his widow Anna Tarball, Dec 18, 1678. The family had probably retired from Groton to Charlestown on account of the Indian War. Children born in Boston: 1. Thomas Tarball b. July 6, 1667. 2. Anna Tarball b. July 6, 1695. He and his brother Zachariah were captured by the Indians probably between 1704 and 1708 and carried to Canada. The following "tradition is undoubtedly nearly correct." "One evening, a little after sunsetting, the Indians came suddenly upon the inmates of a garrisioned house, which stood where the Rev. Mr. Sanderson's house now stands, or near that spot. They all escaped and got safely into the garrison except these boys John and Zachariah Tarball, who being on a cherry tree, had not sufficient time to descend and save themselves from captivity. Some years after, they both came to Groton on a visit; but having become accustomed to savage life, no persuasion prevailed with them to return and live with their friends and relations. Their descendants are still among the Indians in Canada." (see Butler, p. 96). 6. Samuel Tarball b. Oct 14, 1697; m. Dec. 19, 1725, Lydia Farnsworth b.
