I am looking for information about George F. Lawson, a boatbuilder who had a yard at Freeport St., Dorchester at least as early as 1924 and at least as late as 1931. He may have also built in partnership with Frank G. Lawson, perhaps a brother, or possibly his son. In his time at Dorchester, he built some very fine boats, including two named MAHDEE, the first in 1929, designed by Eldredge McInnis ( a 47' - 6 " schooner ) , and in 1932, the second, this designed by Sam S. Crocker ( a 53' - 3 " schooner ), both for Alexander Moffat, of Boston. In 1924, he built a fleet of nine Mount Desert Island ( ME ) sloops, designed by Ralph Winslow. In 1927, he built a fleet of four ( or more ) One Design Pilgrim Class sloops for Duxbury Bay ( MA ), designed by Crowninshield & Burbank. He built both small and large sail and power vessels, many to his own design, others to several other well known designers of that time. A few of his boats still exist. MAHDEE ( II ) is being totally restored somewhere in San Diego, and two Pilgrim Class sloops are still in Duxbury. One is fully restored. The other is in need of restoration. Possibly one or more of the Mount Desert Island class vessels are still around. I think that he may have lived and / or worked in South Boston prior to starting up his yard in 1924 ( or earlier ? ), but I am just not sure of that, at all. If so, he may have worked in any of the few remaining good, small yards still in operation in South Boston. Most , however, had already removed to either Quincy ( Wm. Smith, in 1899 ) or to Neponset ( Geo. F. Lawley & Son Corp in 1912 ) with the coming of the " Strandway " , now called Day Blvd, along the old harbor waterfront, which also took several of the old yacht clubs in its' wake.. I do not know if he was born in Boston, or if he came from out of state, or, possibly, immigrated to Boston. I do not know his age when he began his yard at Dorchester, nor when he may have died. He is a bit of a mystery to me. I would appreciate any information about him from census, street directories, etc that someone of you good folks might provide me with. Thankyou, Joe Pembroke, MA
