Dear Sir, or M'am, No, I do not come from Gloucester, but I have spent time working there restoring sailing vessels and it is a favorite joke among the local shipyard workers. I am sure, however, that SOME will take offense, especially in our overly "PC " world. I have the greatest respect for the people of Gloucester. The reference to ' the smell ' likely goes back to the time when the city was a major sea port and the oiers reeked of fish smell, but more recently to the change of name of the town of Manchester to Manchester on the sea, just a bit too fussy and pretentious for me, and others. Sadly, that is a rarely smelled scent in today's fishing market reality. For what it is worth, there are two men of my ancestral family name listed on the Gloucester Memorial to fishermen lost at sea. Another, not listed, of course, was lost out of Prince Rupert, BC, Canada, a brother of one lost out of Gloucester, and three others, also not listed there, were lost in Nova Scotia fisheries. I have great respect for the heritage of that ancient, rough-hewn city of fisherman families. Joe The Calker
