The index to the 1841-1910 vital records is online at http://www.sec.state.ma.us/vitalrecordssearch/VitalRecordsSearch.aspx This is an index only. It provides the name, town, year, volume, page and type. Then, you can search places like FamilySearch, NEHGS, etc. The information page at http://www.sec.state.ma.us/arc/arcsrch/VitalRecordsSearchContents.html says they will have the index updated to include records to 1915. My wife and I own (miniature) portraits of Em(m)eline and Isaac Field. Isaac (1793 - 1850) was one of 6 sons (11 children overall) of Isaac Newcomb Field (1765 - 1838) and Joanna Ford (1765 - 1839) of Norfolk. Joanna was a 6th generation Mayflower descendant of John Alden. Isaac married Emeline Richards (b. 1801) in 1821 in Dorchester, MA. We also own (miniature) portraits of 2 Field children...another is known...by the same hand (Maria Davenport) but acquired at a different time. The children are identified on the backs as "Master Henry Field", "Miss A. L. Field" & "Miss E. A. Field". It seems reasonable to assume the children are those of Isaac and Emeline but I can't find genealogical evidence they had 3 children with these names/initials. If the children don't belong to Isaac & Emeline, the next most logical conclusion is that they belong to one of Isaac's 5 brothers, namely Enos, Thomas Minott, Aaron Davis, Pearson and Freeman. I am stymied finding a list offspring of the brothers, including Isaac, that account for the 3 identified children. Can anyone help me? All portaits were probably painted between 1830 and 1845. Many thanks!
I found Herbert S. Locke in the 1910 census of Boston City, Suffolk Co, MA. He is enumerated as being 34 years old, with his wife Catherine M, age 30. Catherine's maiden name was Maddern. He is a bookkeeper with an ice company. Living in the household with Herbert S. Locke is Sarah J. Maddern, age 67, listed as his mother-in-law. The censes gives the information that Herbert and Catherine have been married for one year and that Herbert and his parents were born in MA and that Catherine was born in MA, her father was born in England and her mother was born in NY. >From previous research I know that Sarah J. Maddern's maiden name was Sarah Jane Varick who married Henry Maddern - she is the sister to my husband's grandfather, John Briton Varick who married Rachel Westervelt. Sarah Jane and John Briton are two of the nine children of John James Varick and Elizabeth Waldron. The 1920 census has much the same information except that Sarah Jane is no longer with them. Also, Herbert is now the superintendent of the ice company. In the 1880 census of Boston Herbert S is 4 years old, son of Almer (Elmer?) F Locke, age 40, a carpenter. and his wife Mary age 35. Almer and Mary were born in MA as were the parents of both. If you have further information concerning the Locke family, I would be very grateful if you share it with me.
