Hi Bob, Ooops, I forgot one. In 1850 there was also a Roman Catholic church called St. Peters in Cambridge located on Concord Ave-Observatory Hill, Manasses Dougherty was the Pastor. Hi Bob (Tennihan etc.): I am not aware of a St. Mary's in Cambridge, although there may well have been one there. I was aware of a St. Mary's Star of the Sea in East Boston, but that is of much later vintage. However, my grandfather and mother were married at a St. Mary's in downtown Boston in 1870. Not sure if it is still there, but I think it lasted until the early 1950s, maybe later. I cannot recall the address, but ir memory serves properly, it was in the North End. It might be good for your research to contact the Achdiocese. You might try contacting the church she attended. Chances are they attended the same church and they may have death and burial dates. Do you know what cemetery she is buried in. They were probably buried together and the cemetery may have the date of death. You also might be able to make contact with one of her children if they are still living. Let me know if you need help with that. I have access to several databases with current addresses and phones. To All Concerned: There has been a misunderstanding concerning the preservation of historical records in Waldo County Maine. Let me explain and then PLEASE PASS THIS EMAIL ON to anyone or place it on all lists, you've previously contacted so all can have CORRECT information. FIRST-- THE CITY OF BELFAST AND THE MAYOR OF BELFAST SHOULD NOT BE CONTACTED REGARDING THE COUNTY OF WALDO RECORDS. They are doing a WONDERFUL job of preserving the City of Belfast historical records! SECONDLY-When comments of concern were made it was under spontaneous conditions without an opportunity to explain the whole situation. Until now no opportunity for a detailed explanation has occurred nor was I aware that one was needed. Of the group I spoke to, (whom were all very aware of my occupation), only 1 person has come to research at the archive in the 3 years I've been there. So I'm totally surprised by all this action. THIS IS THE SITUATION- As a Professional Archivist, Historian, and long time Genealogist I've been contracted to The County of Waldo, Maine Archive for 3 years. During that time thousands of documents have been recovered, cleaned, and catalogued into a system for PERMANENT RETENTION, NOT DESTRUCTION. I do have a concern involving the safe keeping of one particular collection, the approx. 17,000 original deeds. This is an unusual collection of deeds! As was done in counties across the U.S., individual deeds were brought into the Waldo County Registers of Deeds Office for registration during the 19th Century, and these "original deeds" were registered. The Register's original copies of the "original deeds" are available for public use in the numerous volumes currently held in the Waldo County Register of Deeds Office. "Original deeds" are usually given back to the property owner, but for some unknown reason these were not and were stored in the courthouse basement until I retrieved them. Therefore, since the TEXT of the deeds is already recorded, microfilmed, and available for public use I have been approached with the argument that I'm keeping unnecessary documents. Some people have verbally stated in public meetings, while others have written in newspaper articles, that it's not necessary to keep these "original deed artifacts", therefore the old documents should be declared "abandoned property" which would allow them to be destroyed. I have been trying to teach those people in the public meetings, and by responding to the newspaper reporter's negative statements, that the preservation of the "original deed artifacts" is due to their HISTORICAL VALUE NOT THEIR TEXTUAL VALUE. These documents are handwritten, in many cases by the 19th Century property owner and, at the very least, contain an original signature. Unfortunately, some citizens don't understand the value in retaining "old pieces of paper" and think the expense involved is unnecessary. I'm concerned that over time as money or space decline, as changes in Commissioners occur, and IF the persons against the collection continue their negative attack, this unusual collection might get discarded. IF YOU FEEL INCLINED TO WRITE, YOU CAN SEND YOUR WORDS OF SUPPORT (not criticisms) TO THE WALDO COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AND COUNTY CLERK. THEY HAVE SUPPORTED THE ARCHIVE PROJECT AND THE DECISION TO KEEP THESE DOCUMENTS 100%. Should the Commissioners or County Clerk be approached again after I'm gone with the "abandoned property" issue, it would be helpful to them to know they have supporters. My second expressed concern referred to the loss of experienced researching assistance in the Archive. The public had research assistance and the genealogical information requests have been handled by me via the County Clerk. This form of assistance will not be available after I leave in the next few weeks. Therefore, I was expressing to the group to which I spoke that their window of opportunity for this assistance was closing. All the records in the Waldo County Archive WILL BE ACCESSIBLE to the public through the County Clerk and she is very accommodating. The County Clerk will be trained with the basics of accessing the cataloguing system and the archive holdings, but there will be no one with research and genealogical experience to assist family researchers or any other type of researcher to get the most information from the archive holdings. I apologize if my brief statements have caused undue work for anyone, but I thank all who responded with a desire to support the retention of historical records. It is important for Local Government Officials to know that their care of the local government records is considered important by the public. If you want to contact me, you may do so at [email protected] for the next few weeks. Cheryl Coats Archivist Waldo County Maine

I am as guilty as the rest of you......................... I fell for this too, and e-mailed the Mayor. See my e-mail to him below. Our culprit appears to be one Angelia Hutchins-Thomas. ================================ TO: Mayor Michael D. Hurley The following (excerpt) in a post appeared on several of the genealogy related mailing lists I subscribe to this morning and I felt compelled to write to you to express my hope that these records in question will not be destroyed. They should be published in a book that the city can profit from, not destroyed and lost to researchers and descendants forever. I include the item below so you can see what hundreds of people saw in their e-mail this morning. Sincerely, Jacqueline Sleeper Russell ======================== "Good Morning. For all of those people searching for ancestors in Waldo County, Maine this pertains to you. As a long time resident, and fairly new genealogy buff I have some information that is disturbing. There are a number of people in Belfast (where the Waldo County records are kept), that are wanting the records destroyed. There are only a few people that feel the importance about having the records available for everyone, but those few can not out weight the majority of the people who want them destroyed. The woman in charge of organizing/working with the records has been fighting them over this for some time now and her tenure will be up in a few weeks. After she is gone, there is a great possibility that the records will be lost forever. Here is a link to the City of Belfast. If you're so inclinded to email the mayor. http://www.cityofbelfast.org/councilcontact.shtm The link for the City Clerk's office, genealogical section is currently under construction. I would hate for those records to be gone. Those people who want them destroyed are thinking that it won't affect anyone or if it does it will only be a select few, they are wrong. It affects everyone and once they are gone, there will be no getting them back. Most Sincerely~ Angelia Hutchins-Thomas Ancestors: Moody, Evans, Annis, Hutchins, Pickering, Littlefield, Thomas ========================= AND, PLEASE...................... Take the time to read this, and let us all learn that before we jump in again, to research first and, react (or not react) second. OK....I'm embarrassed. My face is the color of a nice sunset on a dusty evening in New Mexico. I'm afraid I catapulted this news out into the genealogy world and it honestly didn't occur to me to question the couple, Rob and Angie, who sent the e-mail to the Waldo list. I'm sure they had reason to alert Waldo County list members and hopefully they might write to explain why they thought records were about to be destroyed. Perhaps they misunderstood some information. Me? I just reacted and now I'm embarrassed by such passion over...nothing! I do apologize to all of you and to Mayor Hurley and his staff. It was wonderful, though, to see how many people rolled up their collective sleeves to do battle, even though there was no enemy. I learned my lesson. Humbly (er), I remain.....
