What I was hoping for was that someone would be out there to connect to Gate of Heaven. Evidently some family member was around in 1988 regarding William & Johanna. I will keep you in mind though regarding your relation. Thanks for your time. Judy

The Family History Library has microfilms of the index cards to New England naturalizations up to 1906. Years ago, I spent some time looking at the negative copies of the records themselves at the National Archives in Washington, DC. You should check their website to see if they can supply copies of individual records by mail.

That is an educated guess, as I've never looked at the "Index Cards," but the 4 month gap in the dates is about how long it would've have taken to get the certificate after filing the petition. I don't know of any microfilms of the records available through the FHL. There are two locations that I know of that should have the records you're looking for. . . In Boston, the Massachusetts Archives http://www.sec.state.ma.us/arc/arcgen/genidx.htm#natural NARA in Waltham, MA http://www.archives.gov/northeast/boston/public/genealogy-resources.html#naturalization I not sure about the Mass. Archives, but I have ordered records from NARA. The last time I ordered it was $10 for copies of up to 5 records. I had to send them all the information I found from the index & they mailed the records. You could call or e-mail NARA & they could probably answer your question about the different dates, as well as answer any other questions you might have. Contact info is at http://www.archives.gov/northeast/boston/contacts.html

I have an ancestor who immigrated from Canada and was naturalized. My aunt has a naturalization record of some kind (I think she said it was an original certificate or something) which was dated 10 October 1896. I went to the Family History Library and searched the "Index to New England naturalization petitions, 1791-1906" and found my ancestor there with the naturalization date as 15 May 1896. I then searched "Naturalization Index Cards, 1790-1906" and found my ancestor there as well with the naturalization date listed as 21 September 1896. Both of the two records I found in the indexes listed the "Title and location of court" as "USCC Boston Mass". They then show a "Certificate no. (or vol. and page)" listed as "283-133". Question # 1: Why are there records with three different dates? Question # 2: My understanding is USCC means United States Circuit Court. How do obtain the orginal record? Is there a set of microfilm available from the Family History Library that contains copies of those originals? Can someone direct me to it?

They were both stonecutters and their parents were Patrick and Honora (Ireland) It's possible that someone still lives in South Boston as the Gate of Heaven Jubilee Book 1863-1988 has an In Memoriam to William and Johanna. The Gate of Heaven is very much a part of my family history also. If anyone sees this and has some information, I would be glad to hear from you.

Interestingly it is this record of James K. STEVENS marrying Ellen M. STIMPSON that started my quest to find out about the DONNELLs. Stevens' researchers name Ellen as a STIMPSON because of this record, but when I started looking at census records and found all those DONNELLs living with James and Ellen, I knew something was just not right. And whatever the reason is, my research shows she was a DONNELL and not as STIMPSON. I guess that just goes to prove, once again, that you cannot rely on any one record as proof of anything. But again, thank you for your time and the information. Regards, JC Henry
