Hi Dora - I was planning on making a trip to the Vital Records Office next week and if your names aren't extremely common, I will look for the records. What is it exactly that you need? By the way, the main branch of the Boston Public Library does indeed have a genealogy section - called the Microtext Dept. - has old newspapers on microfilm, some census records and lots of street directories. No vital records though. Also, there are several genealogy groups in the area, NEHGS and Mass. Federation of Genealogists to name two. Also a private company called Mass. Docs. does do research for a fee, I've never used them but I've heard its a little pricey. Anyway, send me your names and approximate dates and I'll see what's available. Joanne

Wait, I've been doing research on the NEHGS site, and I only found the bmd records through 1910. I didn't see any mention of them having mroe bmd records than they have online. I know the Mormons have the indexes filmed through the 1940's or something. Not the 1970's. But I did just send them an e-mail, describing what I want done and asking for referrals. I'm sure they'll let me know if they have the means to research it for me. Dear Dora: Boston has the oldest genealogical society in the country, The New England Historic Genealogical Society, est. 1847. Their website is www.newenglandancestors.org. They have the vital records indexes through the 1950s for births, and through the 1970s for marriages and deaths. Someone could look up the citation in the index and your best (and cheapest) bet would be to write to the individual town/city hall for the certificate if it is found in the index. Otherwise, you will be incurring costs for someone to go to the Mass. Vital Records office, pay $9 per hour to look through the records, etc., and get a certified copy (the only type they issue) for $18 on-site. Via mail the certificates from the Vital Records office are $29.00. Ancestry.com has Massachusetts deaths to 1970. Have you tried the SSDI to ascertain her death? I'm assuming that if you are looking in 5 counties near Northhampton, you would be looking in Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden, and Worcester. Have you tried genealogical societies or USGenWeb sites for those counties in Massachusetts (www.usgenweb.org)? Best of luck in your search. I am sorry that you have had no luck in your contacts. Hi Dora, I live in Danbury, CT, but I would go to the MA Vital Record Registry in Dorchester for you. I would have to charge mileage and expenses (usually one tank of gas plus tolls and cost of any records plus the $9/hr research charge VR charges) which I would estimate would be about $100. If that is something that you are interested in, let me know. MA Vital Records is quite nice - BMD for the entire state, all in orderly books that give the vol/pg of where the original records is. You just put that on a slip and turn it in when they call for them and they bring it out. You can then request a copy that is ready for you when you leave. Of course, you can order it online too. Here is their web site. http://www.mass.gov/?pageID=eohhs2terminal&L=5&L0=Home&L1=Government&L2=Depart ments+and+Divisions&L3=Department+of+Public+Health&L4=Programs+and+Services+K+ -+S&sid=Eeohhs2&b=terminalcontent&f=dph_vital_records_g_about&csid=Eeohhs2 Regards, Linda Jackson Danbury, CT
Dora- If you back to the Mass Dos website, and scroll all the way down on the right hand side, they tell you how to email them with special requests - it may be more than you want to pay -I've never used them, but it may be the way to get your info ASAP, although I've noticed that a couple of people have offered to do a lookup for you. Ann
Jacqueline, The NEHGS has obtained BMD records for me after the 1910 cutoff by using their index books and then going to the Vital Records Archives to transcribe the document. The NEHGS does have the indexes up to at least 1970. They or someone that can visit Newbury St can look through the indexes to get the year, town, vol, and page number. I do think the SSDI index would be a good place to start although the residence listed has not mean that is where she died, just where the benefit check went to. I would suggest getting in contact with the Boston collage and find a collage student who would like a little spending money. Almost all the researchers that I have seen for the Boston area want 25.00 an hour plus gas money and also a fee on top of that. Christine and Dora, The NEHGS does great work. I've used them several times. Usually the research takes a month and a half or more due to backlogs, so they probably won't meet the time requirement Dora is looking at. I need to find a researcher to do a lookup in the state vital records office for me. I tried a couple of people listed on one of the national genealogical society web sites, and haven't heard back from them. I called the Boston public library, and the librarian in the social science section - they don't even have a separate genealogy section, which is hard to imagine in a place like Boston, told me they don't have such a list, she told me to look at two national genealogists' web sites, and she also told me that the city of Boston has NO local genealogical society.
