There is a great nostalgia on my part for the wonderful and colorful expressions used by my great aunts and uncles while growing up in Maine - maybe these will jog memories of a few others. Bless My Stars and Garters (aka bless my stahs and gahtahs) which I guess denoted astonishment Leanin Toward Sawyers (Sawyahs) smells worse than clams at low tide busier than a cat on a marble floor slower than cold molasses going up a hill in January So- whether we natives pronounce Worcester as Woostah, Gloucester as Glostah, Havehill as Hava-ill- or make sure that all one sylabble words become two (e.g., four becomes fo-ah), celebrate the differences! Ten to one- the expression "Goucester/Manchester by the smell" was originated with the natives- we do have a sense of humor about ourselves! J.
I grew up in Brighton and heard Medford all along the way. We pronounced it Med-fudd. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, December 11, 2006 12:50 AM Subject: Re: [MASUFFOL] [MAMiddle] How to pronounce Massachusetts Town Names > Joe, > > Do you come from "Gloucester"? Dear Sir, or M'am, No, I do not come from Gloucester, but I have spent time working there restoring sailing vessels and it is a favorite joke among the local shipyard workers. I am sure, however, that SOME will take offense, especially in our overly "PC " world. I have the greatest respect for the people of Gloucester. The reference to ' the smell ' likely goes back to the time when the city was a major sea port and the oiers reeked of fish smell, but more recently to the change of name of the town of Manchester to Manchester on the sea, just a bit too fussy and pretentious for me, and others. Sadly, that is a rarely smelled scent in today's fishing market reality. For what it is worth, there are two men of my ancestral family name listed on the Gloucester Memorial to fishermen lost at sea. Another, not listed, of course, was lost out of Prince Rupert, BC, Canada, a brother of one lost out of Gloucester, and three others, also not listed there, were lost in Nova Scotia fisheries. I have great respect for the heritage of that ancient, rough-hewn city of fisherman families. Joe The Calker
Have you tried the Mass State Archives or the FHL? They have many of the institutional records for Boston. I can't remember which ones you were looking for, but it's worth trying if you haven't already. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Saturday, December 09, 2006 3:14 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MASUFFOL] Prison records. no, no....it is Winthrop by the Sea, Chelsea by the Swamp
Joe, Do you come from "Gloucester"? I am wondering because some people even though you meant that good naturedly, may take offense. I don't, but some would. I love that town./or is it considered a city? I don't recall hearing the Medford one, I know a lot of folks from Medford(including some family) and they never say it like that. Oh well.
And, how can you ever forget to include, olde MEDFORD, pronounced by the townies as Meff-udd. Then, too, there is now Manchester - By - The - Sea , and, good naturedly , sarcastically , mockingly, my favorite, Gloss- Tah - By - The - Smell . Keep a sense of humor. Joe The Calker
