    1. Re: [MASUFFOL] MASUFFOL Digest, Vol 1, Issue 56
    2. Cheryl Dynan
    3. Thank you for the suggestions. I have seen both the marriage and death records but they shed no light on where she might be buried. I took the marriage record with me to the Archdiocese archives trying to find the witnesses to the marriage and it was there I discovered (with the help of a woman who worked there) that they were not married by a priest. I then found that all the Newcombs in Nova Scotia (where she was from) were Protestant. So now I am trying to find her grave. I don't know that it will help me in my research but I like to cover everything. If I can find what type of Protestant she was maybe I can find the church record and find out who the witnesses were. Lots of ifs! Specifics (in case anyone knows any of these families) Stephen M. McLaughlin b. 1861 County Down Ireland, son of James Mclaughlin and Margaret Murray, married Hattie Newcomb, b. ____ in Nova Scotia Canada, dau of Albert and Theresa. Marriage took place May 3, 1887. Hattie died Feb 4, 1892. 3. Hi all, I am new to this list. My ancestor Stephen McLaughlin came to the Boston area from County Down in abt. 1887. He married Hattie Newcomb in abt. 1888 somewhere in Boston. He was a Roman Catholic she was a Protestant, I do not know the denomination. She died (in childbirth) in 1889 or so. I am trying to locate what cemetery she is buried in. Her husband remarried (my great grandmother) and they are buried together in New Calvery cemetery in Mattapan (or West Roxbury), not sure exactly where the line is. I am trying to locate the first wife's grave, anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Cheryl

    3. Cheryl, There are no Newcomb marriages listed on the NEHGS Mass Vital Records for 1886-1890. Since there is a missing marriage volume, I suspect that is why they don't show. You can get the Family History Library microfilm that shows the State Vital Record for Hattie McLaughlin's death. That film is number 961508, Deaths v. 429. Unfortunately, it won't give the burial location. A better route might be to order the City of Boston Death Index, Death Index L-Z 1892-1900, FHL number 836029. Once you have the item number, you can go to the FHL catalog, under Massachusetts, Suffolk, Boston - Vital Records, and order the microfilm that includes that item. You can also use the City of Boston Marriage Index to find the first marriage and then order the film with the item. With the NEHGS database missing the Newcomb names, it would just be too hard to page through each image for a couple of years to look for their marriage. Best of luck on your search. 1. [MASUFFOL] Levi James PARSONS: Dorchester, Winthrop, Boston
    2. Eileen Fair
    3. Seeking information on Levi James Parsons, born in Boston May 13, 1891, son of George and Martha Parsons. Early in life he resided in East Boston, Dorchester and Winthrop, possibly Everett. Known siblings are an older sister, Lillian and a younger brother, George. Married to Minnie Bruce in October 1919, one daughter, Jessie F. Parsons, born 1920. Divorced some time in the 1920s or 1930s. The SSDI indicates he was employed by the Railroad and died in Virginia in 1978. We are interested in learning more about his life from the 1920s until his death in 1978, especially whether he remarried and had another family. His daughter had no contact with her father after her parents were divorced and would dearly love to know what happened to him. Sincere thanks for any information anyone on this list may provide. 1. [MASUFFOL] Tarbell - Bond's Watertown - mentions John Tarbell of Salem
    2. Subject: TARBALL, Tarbell, Tarbel. Source: The Early History of Watertown, Massachusetts: Including Waltham and Weston. Genealogies of the Families and Descendants of the Early Settlers of Watertown, Massachusetts, Includes Waltham and Weston - by Henry Bond, M.D. Boston, 1860. p.598 TARBALL, (Tarbel, Tarbel) Thomas Tarball, supposed to be the progenitor of all the families of that name in New England, settled in Watertown as early as 1656, when he was about 38 years old. By wife, Mary, he had: 1. Elizabeth Tarball b.Jan 5, 1656/7. 2. William Tarball b.Feb 26, 1658/9. It is probable that he had at least two children born before he settled at Watertown, for Thomas Tarball, Sr. and Jr. were original proprietors of Groton in 1662; and Abigail Tarball supposed to be his daughter, married in Watertown Sept. 20, 1672, Joshua Whitney. John Tarball of Salem Village, admitted freeman Mar 22, 1689/90, was perhaps another son. March 30, 1663, Thomas Tarball and wife, Mary Tarball, sold to Deacon Thomas Hastings, a dwelling house and about 30 acres of land in Watertown; also, 4 acres of remote meadow in Cambridge bounds. In the Inventory of John Flemming in 1657, is included a house, etc., appraised at £25, "bought of Thomas Tarball." About the date of the above sale, he moved to Groton [Mass.] He was one of the four persons to whom 20 acres of land was granted by that town about 1665, for erecting a mill to be exempted from taxation 20 years and no other to erect a mill, except on his own land. [Caleb Butler - Hist. of Groton - p.36]. He probably retired from Groton to Charlestown at the outbreak of King Philip's War. He m. (2) at Charlestown, August 15, 1676, Susanna Lawrence the widow of John Lawrence, Jr. He died as early as the beginning of 1681; for widow Susanna Tarball was admitted to the Church in Charlestown March 6, 1680/1 and she died in Charlestown, Mass., Jan 5, 1692. Thomas Tarball, Jr., a proprietor of Groton, 1662 m. in Groton, June 10, 1666, Anna or Hannah ___. [note - Torrey, p. 728 has Anna or Joanna or Hannah LONGLEY m. June 30, 1666] Anna, wife of Thomas Tarball, Jr. was admitted to Charlestown church Oct 28, 1677. Administration was granted to his widow Anna Tarball, Dec 18, 1678. The family had probably retired from Groton to Charlestown on account of the Indian War. Children born in Boston: 1. Thomas Tarball b. July 6, 1667. 2. Anna Tarball b. June 10, 1670 m. at Groton Nov 9, 1687, John Lawrence of Lexington son of Nathaniel Lawrence of Groton. 3. William Tarball, b. Oct 1, 1672. 4. Mary Tarball b. April 2, 1675. Thomas Tarball, Town Clerk of Groton in 1704 and 1705, m. Dec. 1, 1686, Elizabeth Blood, supposed to be a daughter of Richard & Isabel Blood and grand daughter of James Blood of Concord, Mass. He died Jan 24, 1717. Children: 1. Thomas Tarball b. Sept 15, 1687. 2. William Tarball b. June 10, 1689. 3. Elizabeth Tarball b. Aug 19, 1691. 4. Sarah Tarball b. Sept 29, 1693. 5. John Tarball b. July 6, 1695. He and his brother Zachariah were captured by the Indians probably between 1704 and 1708 and carried to Canada. The following "tradition is undoubtedly nearly correct." "One evening, a little after sunsetting, the Indians came suddenly upon the inmates of a garrisioned house, which stood where the Rev. Mr. Sanderson's house now stands, or near that spot. They all escaped and got safely into the garrison except these boys John and Zachariah Tarball, who being on a cherry tree, had not sufficient time to descend and save themselves from captivity. Some years after, they both came to Groton on a visit; but having become accustomed to savage life, no persuasion prevailed with them to return and live with their friends and relations. Their descendants are still among the Indians in Canada." (see Butler, p. 96). 6. Samuel Tarball b. Oct 14, 1697; m. Dec. 19, 1725, Lydia Farnsworth b. Sept 26, 1706 daughter of Benjamin & Mary (Prescott) Farnsworth of Groton. Children: 1. Lydia Tarball b. Oct 9, 1727 m. Dec 6, 1749, Capt. Henry Farwell of Groton. I was just wondering if there was anyone out there whose ancestors lived in Southie about that time and maybe the name Flynn may have come up somewhere along the line. I went onto your website and was absolutely awestruck. There was the Nurse family of Salem. Are you a descendent of Francis and Rebecca Nurse? Looks like you are from their son Samuel. I am from their daughter Mary who married John Tarbell. Do you have any more information on them or where I could get info on Mary and John Tarbell. This would be a big breakthrough for me. When your Byron ancestors went from Ireland to Nova Scotia, where in NS did their ship land? Do you know where they settled in NS? When? I am looking for a timeline and a place where some ships may have docked as I don't have the info on when my Flynns went to NS or where they lived there. Are you from JP or Roxbury now? ====================== Hi, I am not a NURSE descendant but one of the daughters of my 7-great grandmother ABIGAIL (DANE) FAULKNER, DOROTHY, married SAMUEL NURSE whose grandmother was REBECCA (TOWNE) NURSE. My ABIGAIL was also convicted of Witchcraft but was pregnant and was saved from hanging because of that. The child she was pregnant with was AMMI RHUHAMAH FAULKNER who was my 6-great grandfather. Do you GOOGLE searech? You might try that on your NURSE-TARBELL's. I tried a GOOGLE search for JOHN TARBELL & MARY NURSE and there were many sites that popped up. One that looked very interesting had a bad link, but I will share it here. I presume your JOHN is a descendant of THOMAS TARBELL and this may be of help to you. You should try posting on the ESSEX COUNTY MA Rootsweb board and/or mailing list for this couple. Descendants of Thomas Tarbell [Link #50] This is a genealogical chart of several generations of the descendants of Thomas Tarbell (1620-1678), who was the father of John Tarbell, husband of Mary Nurse and son-in-law of Francis and Rebecca (Towne) Nurse. It includes a little biographical information, too. ========================================== Have you searched FAMILY SEARCH & WORLDCONNECT Rootsweb for them too? I would think this couple has been well researched by the TOWNE & NOURSE/NURSE family researchers. All my BYRON research is on my website. They are my daughter-in-law's ancestors not mine. About ships & Nova Scotia - I would try posting to the Nova Scotia Rootsweb board. On your FLYNN's - have you posted your questions to both the Nova Scotia & FLYNN Rootsweb boards? That's an idea too. I live in northern coastal California but was born in Massachusetts. Wishing you good luck with your research. I always advise everyone to get genealogy software and get your research up on WORLDCONNECT Rootsweb. When you do this - you will start seeing progress in your research! I always advise posting EVERYWHERE you can think of on both Rootsweb & Genforum. Someone spotted a post I did three years ago & gave me a book item that broke down a brickwall I had been working on for four years. These posts are worth their weight in gold. Posting stories similar to this happen to me all the time! Best regards, Jacqueline Sleeper Russell website: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SRCH&db=jacquelinesr

    2. Hi Pat, I'm not sure how the streets run in Southie, but I do know that I had a lot of familiy in that area(Southie) during that time period,. ODonnell's, Watts, Daley, Conley, and also Fogarty, Hawkins, Ahern, and many others . My grandmothers cousin was Suan M O'Donnell (one of 9 children of John F O'Donnell and Bridget Doherty from Co Cork) Susan was born in Boston,. and married Seymour Watts, and there are still Watts around today. I don't have all the specific information at hand, and it'd be long if I did, but I told you the general information. If you think that the names connect at all, please don't heitate to ask specific questions, it'd be easier that way. The Fogarty, Byron married into the Watts family, I think some of them married into Seymour and Susan family(their children). Good Luck, and Happy Holidays! Barbara

Could there be a connection to the BYRON family you are researching. JOSEPH BRYON, d. 1884, Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. I have a lot of research on this family on my website. See URL below. 3. Hi Ann, Looks like your John McCarthy is too old for the one I'm looking for. Unless he ends up being the son of one of yours. My John J. McCarthy is listed as age 19 born in Massachusetts per the 1910 census living in the same household (139 Tudor Street) as Josephine and her mother and step-father Cornelius Harrington, siblings, and step-siblings. He and Josephine Monaghan have their son, Joseph in 1914 per his . If they married, than it would have been probably 1913 or 1914, but I can't find it. Nor, can I find them in the 1920 or 1930 census. Best of luck on your McCarthy hunt. 3. As long as we're tossing out McCarthys, mine were also from South B. Jeremiah, [email protected], Ireland, m. Ellen Barry, [email protected] 1813, Ireland. They came to Boston in 1848, with the following children: Timothy, age 9, John, age 5, Jeremiah, age 3, Bartholomew, age 1. The following children were born after their arrival: Catherine, 1850, Margaret, 1852, and William, 1856. Catherine married John Danker, Margaret m. William H. O'Connor. Beyond that I can't find any marriages. Any connections would be welcome! Ann

    2. Hi! I don't have a Margaret Fogarty in Southier with a Canadian backgroud, but, I do have a Theresa Nora Fogarty dob Dec 6 1903 in Boston, died Dec 6 1988. Apparently she was living then(or at some point) at 470 E 7th St So Boston. She married Frank Biron/Byron in 1926, and had 3 children, 2 of whom were Theresa and Charlotte. I don't know anything about them though, or for that matter anything else about their parents. Possible names associated with Fogarty/Biron families may be: Daley, Watts, Conley, all in the So Boston / Dorchester area, as well as Doherty and ODonnell Good Luck Barbara
