    1. [MASUFFOL] Death lookup for Francis COOK(E), Roxbury, 1910-1920 please
    2. Susan Daily
    3. Hello, I just subscribed to the Suffolk and Boston lists, as I continue my research into the Boston area for various relatives. I wondered if anyone is presently volunteering to do lookups at the MA State Archives for vital records after 1910? I believe people can lookup to 1915, now. I am hoping someone can find a death record for Frank and his wife Mary, both of them in the 1910 census, but not in the 1920 census. If anyone happens to be doing research in the vital records office for records after 1915, will you see if you can find a death for these two? I have included everything I know about them below. Thanks so much for any help. Susan Daily Missouri This is my Family Group Sheet for Frank Cook: ========================================================= Husband: Francis "Frank" Cook ========================================================= AKA: Francis Cooke Born: Dec 1857 - Sunnaghmore, Cloone, Leitrim, Ireland Baptized: 14 Dec 1857 - Cloone (Saint Mary's Chapel), Cloone, Leitrim, Ireland Died: Bef 1920 Buried: Father: John Cooke (1826-1905) Mother: Anne Baxter (Abt 1830-1914) Marriage: 4 Sep 1890 Place: Brighton (Saint James), Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Events -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. He was the godfather to his sister Elizabeth on 20 May 1873 in Cloone (Saint Mary's Chapel), Cloone, Leitrim, Ireland. 2. He immigrated aboard the S. S. Catalonia from Queenstown on 21 Sep 1885 to Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA. He said he was age 22 and a cooper. He was in the FP Steerage Deck and brought one piece of luggage with him. There were 411 passengers on board ship, some originating from Liverpool. 3. He worked as a potter in 1890. 4. He had a residence from 1890 to 1895 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA. In 1895, his cousin Rosa Cooke came to visit him while he was living at an address (hard to read) like 379 Fireman St. 5. He was the godfather to his nephew, Francis Joseph Cook, on 15 Oct 1893 in South Boston (Gate of Heaven), Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA. 6. He received his United States naturalized citizenship before 1900. 7. He worked as a bottler for a liquor dealer in 1900. 8. He resided at 61 Centre Court from 1900 to 1910 in Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA. He and his wife rented the apartment from his brother-in-law, Nicholas Leen, who owned and lived in the house, and after his death, from his widow, Margaret (who was still there in 1920 with just a son). 9. He worked as a clerk from 1904 to 1905 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA. He was working at 16 Canal Street, which was on Haymarket Square. 10. He worked as a foreman at a liquor store in 1910. ========================================================= Wife: Mary Leen ========================================================= Born: Jun 1859 - Ireland Baptized: Died: Bef 1920 Buried: Father: Nicholas Leen (Est 1830- ) Mother: Frances "Fanny" (Est 1830- ) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Events -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. She immigrated in 1869. In 1910, she thought she emigrated in 1871. But her brother emigrated in 1882, which seems more reasonable since her family was not in the 1870 or 1880 census. 2. She worked as a domestic in 1890. She lived in Boston. ========================================================= Children ========================================================= 1 U (Infant) Cook Born: Bef 1900 Baptized: Died: Infant Buried: Spouse: Marr. Date: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ========================================================= Baptism Notes (Husband) ========================================================= His godparents were his father's uncle, Nicholas Cooke, and Bridget Gannon. ========================================================= Research Notes (Wife) ========================================================= Oddly, in 1910, Mary says she had 6 children born, 3 living, but none are living with them! But in 1900, after 10 years of marriage, she only had given birth to one child, not living. ========================================================= Notes (Marriage) ========================================================= The ceremony was performed by the Rev. John J. Nilan. (He later became the Bishop of Hartford in 1910.) Their witnesses were her brother Nicholas Lean and Margaret Keegan, perhaps a friend or neighbor from County Leitrim.

    3. For Joe, Re; George F Lawson The 1910 Federal Census has him at 25 Walchon or Waldron Court (just off Walchon or Waldron Street) in Marblehead, MA. Head of household, married to Jennie R. He 30 she 25 with one child, Robert A., 2 yo. They had had 4 children, but only Robert was alive. His father was born in MA, his mother in Canada. Robert A. (listed as Robert Alex) was born in Marblehead, MA on October 18, 1907 (MA Archives Births 1907 vol. 566, pg. 617, line 110). Parents George F. and Jennie R. (McIntosh) Lawson of Marblehead, father born Glouster, mother born Scotland. George was born in MA, (calc 1880) she in Scotland (calc 1885). She got her citizenship in 1895. He was a boat builder working in the "yards". They rented their home. He was working on April 15, 1910, but had been out of work for 3 weeks of time during 1909. MA Archives has George F Lawson born July 1, 1879 in Glouster, MA, along with a twin brother Robert A. (note this becomes his son's name, maybe Robert died early, although I couldn't find a MA death record for Robert 1879-1915 that matched). Parents were Peter & Susan E. Strople. Peter was a mariner and Peter was born in Sweden. MA Archives Births 1879, vol 304, pg. 187, lines 2 &3. Back to George: He married Jennie in Glouster on June 6, 1906, MA Archives Marriages 1906, vol. 562, pg. 411, line 79. Her given & maiden names were Janet R. McIntosh. He 26, she 21. He was a "ship builder" she was a "clerk". First marriage for both. His father's name was written as Lars P. Lawson, and I'd guess the P. is for Peter pending confirmation. Her parents were Matthew F. and Mary A. (Reid) Strople. Married by James Todd of Boston, clergyman. The record was registered onn June 18, 1906. There is George F Lawson listed as soldier in WW1 from MA, but no supporting evidence, just his name. This is all I found. 1. [MASUFFOL] George F. Lawson, Dorchester, Mass Boatbuilder
    2. Joseph T Chetwynd
    3. I am looking for information about George F. Lawson, a boatbuilder who had a yard at Freeport St., Dorchester at least as early as 1924 and at least as late as 1931. He may have also built in partnership with Frank G. Lawson, perhaps a brother, or possibly his son. In his time at Dorchester, he built some very fine boats, including two named MAHDEE, the first in 1929, designed by Eldredge McInnis ( a 47' - 6 " schooner ) , and in 1932, the second, this designed by Sam S. Crocker ( a 53' - 3 " schooner ), both for Alexander Moffat, of Boston. In 1924, he built a fleet of nine Mount Desert Island ( ME ) sloops, designed by Ralph Winslow. In 1927, he built a fleet of four ( or more ) One Design Pilgrim Class sloops for Duxbury Bay ( MA ), designed by Crowninshield & Burbank. He built both small and large sail and power vessels, many to his own design, others to several other well known designers of that time. A few of his boats still exist. MAHDEE ( II ) is being totally restored somewhere in San Diego, and two Pilgrim Class sloops are still in Duxbury. One is fully restored. The other is in need of restoration. Possibly one or more of the Mount Desert Island class vessels are still around. I think that he may have lived and / or worked in South Boston prior to starting up his yard in 1924 ( or earlier ? ), but I am just not sure of that, at all. If so, he may have worked in any of the few remaining good, small yards still in operation in South Boston. Most , however, had already removed to either Quincy ( Wm. Smith, in 1899 ) or to Neponset ( Geo. F. Lawley & Son Corp in 1912 ) with the coming of the " Strandway " , now called Day Blvd, along the old harbor waterfront, which also took several of the old yacht clubs in its' wake.. I do not know if he was born in Boston, or if he came from out of state, or, possibly, immigrated to Boston. I do not know his age when he began his yard at Dorchester, nor when he may have died. He is a bit of a mystery to me. I would appreciate any information about him from census, street directories, etc that someone of you good folks might provide me with. Thankyou, Joe Pembroke, MA
