Although I have received messages from a few people in England, I don't remember hearing from a Masters. I would definitely like more details and remain hopeful that there is an obscure connection to someone. As yet, I have found no one still living who is related to our Tulls or Masters. I looked up Southampton on my map and noted that it is far south of the three counties that I have been researching: Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire. I am hoping that you have ancestors from those areas though. Let me give you a little background, and then I would love to find out more details about your Masters heritage. If you are not connected, perhaps you will be aware of someone who is and pass along what I have sent to you. I am at a dead end now. George Harold Masters, b. 1891 in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire (possibly Derbyshire, acc Free BMD) (my grandfather), died 1976 Married Sarah Estella (ne Smith) Brown in Delmer, Ontario in 1913), born in 1885 in Newcastle on Tyne, England Elizabeth Stella Annette, born in Brownsville, Ont., 1913, 1988, never married George Clarence Dudley Masters, Brownsville, Ont. 1916 (my father), died 1989) Richard Dudley Masters, b. 1894 in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire (Horninglow), died 1975, lived in Toronto during most of his life Married Florence Robson, also born in Newcastle on Tyne and died in the early 1940's A daughter-in-law from this marriage is still living in St. Thomas, Ontario, who has two children. These are our only living relatives connected to the Masters of whom we are aware. My mother and I visited this family in 1999 and I did some research there. (These two brothers migrated to Ontario with their father, George Masters, sometime after the 1901 Census but before 1913, without the mother, Annette Tull Masters or their sisters. We still do not know why they left the women behind or what happened to them after George and the boys left.) Sisters: Elizabeth Ann Masters, died in Burton in 1895 at age 7 Sarah Masters, age 12 in 1901, b. Burton on Trent, have found no other documentation so far Mary Annette Masters, born 1893, Burton on Trent, age 8 in 1901 Census Father: (my great grandfather) George Masters, listed in 1901 as age 39, b. Leicestershire, Kirby Bellairs (Bellars), living in Newhall, Derbyshire Mother: Annette Tull Masters, married to George in Burton in 1897, b. Burton, age 36 in 1901 census, christened in 1969, but not born that year. Possibly born about 1865 I have also found a George Masters married to Elizabeth Knight in 1883 in Derby, when our George would have been about 22, so I'm wondering if he was married previously before Annette Tull. I have also located another George Masters, christened on Dec. 13, 1829 in Kirby Bellars, Leicester, England, whose parents are listed as George Masters and Elizabeth. I found them on FamilySearch International Genealogical Index, but I have not sent for documentation on any of the above information. I have wondered if the 1829 George could be the father of my great grandfather because of the place of birth. George Masters seems to be a fairly common name. The mysteries are many in this family because very little information was given to us, while my grandparents were alive. My grandparents migrated to Detroit, Michigan when my father was 7 (early 1920's), where they lived until their deaths. Our family lived in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. My sister, Elaine, and I have worked together to locate the above details and are anxious to find out what happened to Annette and the sisters and also the parents of all of the George Masters. Please feel free to share whatever details you have, and I am looking forward to hearing back from you soon. They had been living in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire previously, although George was listed in 1901 Census as being born in Kirby Bellars, Leicestershire. Do we have any connections Mary Georgia, USA -----Original Message----- From: Louise Jordan [mailto:jordan@36appledown.fsnet.co.uk] Sent: Thursday, January 31, 2002 4:32 AM To: MASTERS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MASTERS] Masters in England I have been subscribing to this list for a few months and it appears that most of the discussion involves Masters in America. Is anyone out there researching Masters in England? Especially in the counties of Herefordshire (1795 - 1888), Worcestershire, Huntingdon(1871), Derbyshire(1881) and Nottinghamshire(1991 - 1930).
