Hi I thought I would repost my MASTERS names. Henry John MASTERS, born in somewhere in Yorkshire abt 1848 (parish unknown and not in civil registration) married Mary Ann HARVEY at Christ Church Spitalfields in London in 1870. Henry's father was John MASTERS, a coachman. They lived in Bethnal Green. Their children were Eliza (1870), Henry Adolphus (1872-3), Charles (1874), Sarah (1876), Charlotte (1878), William (1881), Samuel (1883) and George (1887). Some of their children were christened at St. Dunstan in the East and St. Bartholomews. I would be glad to hear from anyone researching this MASTERS family. Charlotte Vancouver, B.C. Canada

Hi June G. I'm looking forward for the information. Tell me again how you are related to the Indians? I am trying to let this all sink in so we can share information on our Masters. Really looking forward to researching with you. Hi Sandra -- Love your screen name -- SCALAWAG -- that was one of my dad's favorite expressions, when he would talk about some of his brothers or perhaps a co-worker in the Texaco oil fields where he worked for 41 years. I truly appreciate the way you end your messages, in memory of your mother. It is beautiful. I recently found out from a Christian friend that GoodBye means God Be You!!! I will end with that for now. I am gathering up my Masters, ancestry info. to mail if you would like some copies. June G.
Hey no problem, Georgia is Southwest and Alabama is Southeast, we join at the hip. If they are hot so are we, if we are cold so are they. Phenix City, Alabama is across the river, we hate them. Up until last year they didn't have to have Car Insurance. They would come over here, hit us and go home and we would have to have our Insurance pay for the damage, then we would have a mark on our Insurance\ against us and then our Insurance would have to sue them. :o( Also, bless their hearts, Phenix City uses our Doctors, Malls, Parking places, grocery stores, airports...oh just every thing. But all in all we love Alabama once we get pass Opelika and Auburn , Alabama. My roots are in Alabama paternal and materna. I am first generation Georgian. Daddy came here during the depression found work with Southern Bell and stayed. My Masters are from Alabama. My grandmother was born in Yellow Pine, Alabama, Washington County. She lived in Vinegar Bend , Alabama, Washington, but her paternal grandprants Benjamin F. and Unity Williford Woulard and her mother Mary Elizabeth Woulard, Moss, Buckaloo ,Masters, lived in Mississippi, State Line and Eret, Wayne/Green County, Mississippi. Hi June G. I am over here in Georgia. Alabama is the next State across the river. I am about 4 hours from Washington County, Alabama 60 miles out side of Mobile Alabama and Washington County sits right on the Mississippi State Line. I hope the Dawes List helps you. It did me I found my grandmother's name listed Minnie Lee Masters, only she has applied in her married name Minnie L. Waldrop. So don't give up if you look and can't find her, try another way. I did....and found her. She was listed in the Choctaw Indians who didn't join the Trail of Tears. I haven't found out why, yet, she wasn't moved with them. Could have been she married my grandpapa at age 16 and by by the time she applied on the Dawes List she was already age 22 married and had children. When you check out the Dawes List, if you first don't find your ancestor, play around with it. That is what I did. I really accidentialy ran across her name. Good Luck. Hi Judy -- Do believe, I may have opened up a "new vein" in my Masters research of my maternal grandmothers family name. Her name was Maggie Arvizna Masters -- she was the youngest daughter, of eight children, 3 sisters and 4 brothers. Her mother was, my grandmother, was full blood indian, I was always told by my mother, her sisters and brother. They all had the features, dark hair, eyes and facial features with indian ancestors. I am going to check in the DAWES website links that was sent by Dave in Houston and Sandra -- in Albama?? (may be wrong on that) the state I mean. Thank you for you e-mail. Sincerely, June G. Willis My maiden name GLEGHORN is my maiden name. We live in Stillwater, OK Thanks again June

Oh look for me one day. My daughter graduated from Oral Roberts University. My son in law was born and raised outside of Tulsa. I have visited Tulsa several times, we are friends with Oral and Evelyn Roberts and Richard and Lindsay also. I've stayed on the compound with the Roberts when my daughter was in school. My husband was in the City of Faith for almost two weeks cleaning his blood. Taking it out of one arm , cleaning it, and putting it back in the other arm. He had Advanced Multiple Sclerosis. I lost him two years ago today. (Oct. 27, 2000) Oh Yes, Please and Thank you...I would love to have whatever you will share with me and the pictures. Tell me your dad's family name again. O. Master, the other daughter my grandma Minnie's papa is listed Henry Masters. And of course the name Milfred Master is thrown around. We know the girls were half sisters, same mother different papas. The Masters were in the Wayne/Green County, Mississippi area around 1870 until at least 1978. We have a picture of one the Masters men's mother, she looks more than half Indian and on the back of the tin type picture is written Minnie Masters. She was visiting her granddaughter, my grandmother in Vinegar Bend, Alabama, Washington County, Alabama, about sixty miles outside of Mobile , Alabama. Good luck on your hunt....for your Indian relatives. Sandra maiden name Waldrop
Hi June, Got just a second tonight. I just got home. I was delighted to hear about your name Masters. Grandmaw Minnie being an Indian had always been just a story going around and no one really knew for sure. We had heard she was Choctaw and she lived in Mississipi. They have the MOWA Indians in Washington County, Alabama where the Choctaw Indians refused to leave, they stayed there in Washington County, Alabama about sixty miles outside of Mobile, Alabama. I am sending you one of the ways I found my grandmaw Minnie's name. Maybe you can make heads or tails of it. If this won't help, just go back to where your Internet comes up and type in you family name like Masters and Dawes Indian and see what it pulls you up. I have written off and I have heard from a couple of people who are still researching. I have a friend who has written a book, "They Call The Wind Red", she is helping me with my Choctaws. The Mowa she talks about are the Choctaws from Mobile and Washington County, Alabama, they called the Choctaws who stayed behind the Mowas. Keep in touch, please , and let me know how you are doing with your family. For those that believe they have an Indian ancestor, as mentioned, the Dawes Rolls is almost certain confirmation. The Dawes Rolls are not the only source for exploring their Indian roots. In 1906, Guion Miller was taking applications from individuals who filed an application for funds provided from a court judgement. These applications provide valuable genealogical information if you had an ancestor who submitted a claim. Some help on researching your Cherokee heritage can be found at Jerry Wright Jordan's "Cherokee By Blood" http://www.tngenweb.org/cherokee_by_blood/index.htm Dave Masters
It is really interesting that you are interested in the Indian name. My grandfather lived in middle Tennessee, as did my g-grandfather. My grandfather always said there was Indian blood in the family. All of his four children had dark hair and dark eyes. But I never found out anything about the "Indian blood" he alluded to. This is interesting. I really need to do some digging into this theory. thank you. Judy Bondurant (my grandfather was Tom Masters, son of James Washington Masters).
Sandra -- my name is June, I live in OK but a native TEXAN. My maternal grandmother was a Masters and her mother was a full blood indian, however, I do not what tribe. I am guessing probably Cherokee, however, I do not know for sure. In Talequah, OK, east of Tulsa is the Cherokee Tribal headquarters and council. You can trace with their help, the possible ancestry in the Cherokee tribe -- which I intend to do soon as find a little free time. My mother had very definite indian features, high cheek bones, slight curved nose, always tanned easily, black hair and eyes. Also both her sisters and a brother had those features. I appreciate finding your message in my email search in my genealogy search. Perhaps we can learn things that will help each other in researching ancestry. My maiden name is Gleghorn, my mother's was Person. All of my grandmother's family lived in Texas, around Athens, Henderson County. Will share info. as I learn any. Sincerely, June G. Willis
In my opinion, based on research, Masters is an English surname. This is based on records dating back to the 1400's of the surname Master/Masters. However, this does not mean that everyone in this country with the surname originated from England. Some immigrants from other countries with similiar names, eventually anglized their names to Masters. Some of the so-called "indian" features could have been derived from Minorcan ancestry. This does not preclude someone with our surname from having Indian ancestry. For instance, I am part Cherokee, thru my paternal grandmother. From my research I have found that my g-g-g-g-grandmother was Cherokee. A picture I have of my great grandfather could easily be transformed to that of a Cherokee, with computer magic dressing him in typical indian dress. Even my Dad [a direct descendent of English colonists thru Tennessee] had some Indian features derived from his Malone ancestors. I researched this several years ago to trace a rumor that had been in the Malone family for years. It is suggested that if one suspects Indian ancestry should see if an ancestor married a Native American. If someone is on the Dawes list, that is an indication that should be a help in chasing down ancestry....find the European that married the Native American. Dave Masters
Does anyone know if Masters could be a Choctaw Indian name? I was visiting a Cherokee Indians reservation in Hamilton Georgia in the next County, and I was told all my life that my grand mother and great great grandmother might be part Indian. But nothing has showed up until lately. I found my grandmoter's name on the Dawes List. I asked them about the Cherokee Indians about the Masters name and they said, "Oh yes, the Masters name is well known among the Choctaw Indiands." Oddly they took one look at my eight year old granddughter and ,told her she was of the Choctaw Indians statue, they could tell by the shape of her body. She is about 10 to 12 lbs over the weigh she should be according to her Doctor. They said they could tell by her bone structure and the shape of her shoulders and length of legs. My granddaughter has dark deep brown, almost black hair and almost black eyes. They called her "Little Choctaw girl". They even said they were sure she would grow tall. I am 5'6' and so is her mother and they said , "oh no, she will be taller". I asked them how they knew so much about the Choctaw Tribe and they...looked at each other and smile...on said, "Choctaw, our enemy, we know them well." She said , "most Cherokees and Choctaws do not mix well." Has anyone ever heard of this before? Thanks for any information.b Sandra Maiden name Waldrop
The following should be of interest to you, if you can trace your ancestors to the Minorcans that settled in Florida, especially the Mestre/Mestra families, which later anglized their surname to Masters. The Minorcans can be found under Balearic Islands. I explored the site and found it very interesting. If you think it is of interest to your visitors, please feel free to link to any or all of the URLs given for each set of records. Thanks to the hard work of Lucie Servole Myers, I have an original research project reconstructing names of colonists of Greek, Italian, Minorcan and Turkish origins to Florida in May 1768. Eight ships sailed under the direction of Andrew Turnbull. Lucie has reconstructed the names of 431 passengers on board the 8 ships. The ships are organized in the following immigrant groups: Passengers from Spain http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/toflaspain.shtml Passengers from Greece http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/toflagreece.shtml Passengers from Corsica http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/toflacorsica.shtml Passengers from Canary Islands http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/toflacanary.shtml Passengers from Italy http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/toflaitaly.shtml Passengers from Balearic Islands http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/toflabalearic.shtml Lorine Lorine McGinnis Schulze Lorine McGinnis Schulze -- * The Olive Tree Genealogy http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ * Past Voices:Letters Home http://pastvoices.com/ * USA Genealogy http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/usa_genealogy/ * My Family Branches http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~myfamilybranches/ otg@csolve.net or olivetreegen@netscape.net
