My great grandma was Margaret Jane Masters. She was born 1850 in Missouri to Andrew & Elizabeth Masters. I have Andrew on several census and they show him being born about 1805-1808 in Missouri. Have not been able to find his parents. BUT with so many Margaret's do you think there might be a connection. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Carpenter, Masters, Dewees, Joaneda, Masters, Mastre, DeMasters, Cohen, Botefuhr Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Fly.2ACEB/597 Message Board Post: Someone Please Help me locate ancestors: I I am descended from William Joseph Cohen and Doris Fannie Botefuhr. Doris Fannie is descended from Ora Carpenter of Derby, Vermont and Antonia H. Masters of Florida. I have Ora Carpenter traced from the book “A Genealogical History of the Rehoboth Branch of the Carpenter Family in America, Brought down from their English Ancestor, John Carpenter, 1303, with many biographical notes of descendants and allied families. By Amos B. Carpenter. Amherst, Mass: Press of Carpenter & Morehouse 1898.”. My problem is Antonia and her ancestors. My grandmother who is 90 states that Doris Fannie’s family were Menorcans. I have begun my family genealogical search. I have found some information and hope someone can fill in the blanks for me. In the 1860 census, Ora Carpenter & Antonia and their children are living in Enterprise, Florida. Oldest daughter is Fanny, 15 yoa and their other children (Ora & Anna, Virginia Rosa, Jane & Charles ). However earlier; in the 1850 census, Ora & Antonia are living in Enterprise. The interesting fact in this earlier census is that their neighbors are Henry C. DeMasters 55, (makes year of birth 1795) and Margareth 43 yoa (born in 1807). My assumption is that possibly Antonia is the daughter of Margaret. In my research I found, “Duval County Marriage Records, Chronologically listed for the Period 1823-1869. Copied from the Official Records in the Office of the County judge Jacksonville, Florida by the STATEWIDE RARE BOOKS PROJECT, Florida Works Project Administration for Jacksonville Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Official Court Record Books O, 01 and 1 Indexed and Bound in One Volume, Volume I 1940.” In it I found on page 3, Henry C. Demartes married Margaret S. Mastre, the license was issued on June 3, 1830 and the date of marriage was 6 June 1830. I then located online, at www.gendex.com/users/mccown/betts a Margarita Zeferina Joaneda (1798- ) female who was born in St. Augustine, Spanish East Florida 8/26/1798. (I note that there is 8/9 years difference between census and what is online). She was the daughter of Jose, Joaneda and Isabel Maria Dewess. Margarita Joanede was married first to Pedro Josef Masters, (who must have died (1799-<1830). Her second spouse is Henry C. Masters (*1800-) married June 6, 1830. (Match!!!) There is a discrepancies of last names for Henry C. (ie, 1850 census, vs Marriage index, vs Betts postings. Since the marriage records indicate Henry’s last name is DeMartes, is it possible that Antonia is the daughter of Pedro?
Betty, I am pretty sure it went this way. Mary Masters was the daughter of James and Amy Masters and the sister of Nehamiah Masters. James, the father, died in N.J. Amy then becomes the second wife of Reuben Oldfield and they move to Hornby, NY area. The Masters children either move with them of follow after them. I am sure Mary Masters married Gideon Gould in New Jersey. When Gideon dies she marries Peter Decker. Mary Masters and Gideon Gould had a daughter named Phoebe who marries Thomas Oldfield the grandson of Reuben Oldfield. The off spring of the Phoebe Gould/Thomas Oldfield union is my great grandfather Gideon Gould Oldfield. Regards, Richard L. Oldfield

Hi, We have e-mailed before. Amy Maiden Name Unknown was born 16 Nov 1764 and married James Masters b abt 1765; died 1797 in Sussex Co., NJ Some evidence Amy m 2d John Decker in NJ and 3d Reuben Oldfield. She is buried in Martin's Hill Cemetery, Catlin, Chemung Co., NY A son by James, William, is buried there also as is her daughter Mary. Her other children were James mentioned below, Nehemiah and Wiilliam. James Masters (1785-1861) m Phebe Clark Dixon Masters as her 2d husband. I have lots more on this family. Nehemiah's line is on the Hornby, Steuben Co., NY site. My line drscends from John, the oldest son of James & Phebe. Phebe was m to Isaac Dixon in 1810 and their son was named James so when Phebe m James their first son could not be James. "James has been used in my line twice as a first name and once as a middle name. Laura Ingalls Wilder's biography claims one Masters in Burr Oak came from England. The shooting incident is there also. I'm also curious as to where Susan Masters comes from. Here's my line - all the way from Virginia also! THOMAS H. MASTERS (abt. 1754 Rockbridge Co., VA/8-26-1838, Greenville Co., SC)(farmer) m. MARGARET SHIELDS ( ? /bef. 1820 ) on 2-22-1783 in Rockbridge Co., VA. They had children Ann, James, John, Thomas H., Jr. and Richard. Richard was my 5th gr-grandfather. He was born in Virginia and married Nancy Cochran. Thomas and his family moved to South Carolina around 1790-1800. Richard and his family moved to Gilmer Co., GA and are listed in the 1850 census. I do not believe that your Susan is a member of this Masters family. The only other Masters in upstate SC in the late 1700's was Notley Masters. However, I don't see a Susan listed as a daughter. Good luck in your search! I live in SC and if you need any help, please let me know! -Dana
