>From the Diary of Judge Jason Niles, Attala Co., Mississippi Covering the Period of 1846 - 1890 http://www.rootsweb.com/~msattala/niledeaths.html "C.M. Massey killed by 17 June 1864" My question -- WHO was C. M. MASSEY? Thanks for any information. Thelmarie Curtis [email protected]
I too, would like to know who C.M. Massey was. I sat in the library in Kosciusko and scanned Judge Niles diary record. Drury, one of my grandfather's much older brothers was mentioned. I didn't see C. M. Massey then. Drury Massey stayed in Attala Co, MS until his death. An angry Grandfather and son-in-law shot Drury in the back at night. Apparently Drury had been showing the wrong kind of attention to an underage young lady, rewarding her with silver dollars. An account of the incident can be found in the Attala Co, MS, library, in SOME ABSTRACTS FROM THE DIARY OF JUDGE NILES, 1814-1894. This was Drury Benson Massey who died in Nov 1871. I do not believe that C. M. was in the family of Joseph Massey. There were several Massey families in the 1850 and 1860 census records who did not seem to be related to ours. Anyone check the census for 1860 Attala County? Barbara Massey Ferrell
Checking the abstract of Judge Niles' Diary, I think this should be C.K Massey. June 19, 1864, Sunday This morning I rode with Lucas out to Ben Rooks' (Harlow's old place) thence to the widow Rooks', thence to Sinclair's Spring-- thence home. L. told me C. K. Massey was killed, "Citizen" announces death of Colin Pearce. Jap Bridges & Dave Brown in trouble at Canton-- praying to be released. P. M. rode out there again--arriving just at sunset--stayed till 9 o'clock. I still don't know who this was, but suspect a search of the CSA soldiers from MS might help. Barbara Massey Ferrell
