1. I disagree with Theron that Affenacious Massey was probably a son of Frederick Massey. I believe that Frederick's children are known: Thomas, Winney, Jeptha, Charlotte, Holland, Reddick, Isaac and Azel. (Thomas and Reddick ended up in Georgia, but the rest of the male siblings were in Wake County, NC.) Frederick almost certainly remained in Wake County, North Carolina until his death. He last shows up on tax records there in 1820 and by 1821 his land taxes are being paid by his youngest son Azel. I do agree that who Affenacious Massey's parents were remains a mystery. I have tried for years to find out exactly who the children are of Eli Massey and Catherine Bolton, with no success. (I descend from Catherine's brother James Bolton). I do believe that at least 2 of their children were Elijah B. and Roena and that Eli died in Paulding Co. GA; however, I do not have proof that the Eli in Paulding Co. GA was the same Eli, son of Pettipool Massey, and husband of Catherine Bolton. Reddick Massey only had one child that survived to adulthood that has ever been identified (Kimbrel); I notice from the birthdates that it would be possible that Affenacious could be a son of Thomas (and therefore a grandson of Frederick). I would be interested in whatever info you have on Affencious that came from a source other than Judge Massey's books (I have all of those books and have studied that info already.) 2. I do have that this Eli Massey may have been called Elias, but I do not have the source of this info in my notes. I do know that this Eli was not the same person as Elijah Massey, who married Thanie Bolton (niece of Catherine) and who was the son of Hezekiah Massey and maybe wife Nancy. 3. I see Theron has placed James 6 Massey who married Sarah Yates as a child of Eli and Catherine. I would be most interested in info substantiating this placement. I can tell you that Catherine's father's name was James. 4. Eli and Catherine supposedly moved to SC (Fairfield County or Laurens County) by 1830. Catherine's mother likely died between 1820 and 1830 in Wake County and all her children that eventually left the area had done so between 1825 and 1830. Carla Tate
Carla wrote: "I disagree with Theron that Affenacious Massey was probably a son of Frederick Massey." I, Theron, also disagree with what my post said! I intended to write that Affenacious Massey was more likely a GRANDSON of Frederick [4] Massey, a brother of Pettipool [4.] Whether Affenacious was son of Reddick [also called Frederick Jr, but maybe erroneously] is not certain. I would have to agree with Carla that "who Affenacious Massey's parents were remains a mystery." In this area of Massey research, Carla has no peers and I would give more credence to her conclusions than to my own! Actually Judge Massey showed alternate parents - both by HYPOTHESIS - for Affanacious. I vaguely remember that John Mack Massey of Birmingham challenged some of Judge Massey's placements in this area. I need to find his letter in my attic archives. "I see Theron has placed James 6 Massey who married Sarah Yates as a child of Eli and Catherine. I would be most interested in info substantiating this placement. I can tell you that Catherine's father's name was James." I qualified this placement in the MASSEY-L post as being "most [probable]" I have been even less definite in private posts to Kemis. I based my conclusions on a correlation of Judge Massey's two alternate placements of James/----- and James/Sarah Yates with an analysis of two Eli Masseys in Gwinnett and Muscogee Cos. Actually the Josiah Massey in 1840 Muscogee may be a candidate for father of James6. The Eli in 1850 Muscogee is too young to be father of James6, but maybe an older brother, But I don't think we've explicitly identified a male in an 1830 or 1840 census that we can identify with James6. Any further thoughts you have regarding the parents of James6 would be of high interest to myself, and, I'm sure even more so to Kemis. Both James6 and close neighbor had wives who were from Hancock Co., GA. Maybe we need to look there for early Masseys. Judge Massey of course thought some of the Muscogee Masseys were from James3 son of Hezekiah2. I doubt that. Good chance they are all from Richard2 through sons William3 and Hezekiah3. I know my Muscogee Masseys were from Richard2>Hezekiah3>Richard4. Theron
