The 1850 census of Muscogee Co., GA has three distinguishable groups of Masseys. (1) The largest group [in three different districts] is of my line and includes my gg gf Nathaniel Dudley Massey and ggg gf Barachais Massey and several other of Barachais's children and grandchildren. The DNA of N.D.'s gg grandson [my 2d cousin] indicates these are all part of Group 1 of the Massey DNA results. The instructions for the 1850 census takers were to show the state of birth of each person. To my good fortune, the 1850 enumerator for Muscogee Co., in many cases, showed county AND state. So I got a "free ride" in identifying my Massey ancestors! Nathaniel was shown born in Washington Co., GA, and, some of his older brothers were shown born In Franklin Co., NC! With that start, I was able to find the family of Barachais's father, Richard Massey in Frankin Co.,NC. Then from other sources, I determined my line to be Nathaniel6, Barachais5, Richard4, Hezekiah3, and Richard2 and wife, Anne Pettipool of Prince George and Brunswick Co., VA. My Muscogee Co. Masseys moved to northeastern Texas shortly after the Civil War ended. (2) In District 9 was a Kimbrell Massey [b. 1809/10], also born in Wake Co., NC. The Diana Massey b. 1789/90] in his household, almost certainly his mother, can be identified as Diana Bolton wife of Frederick5 Massey Jr [Frederick4 Sr., William3 (older brother of Hezekiah3 above), Richard2 and Anne Pettipool.] This connection would indicate that Kimbrell [Kimbrell6] and Nathaniel6 were 3d cousins. Of interest is that Frederick4 Massey Sr is an ancestor of Massey researcher Ray Massey, a regular contributor to the Massey list, whose DNA places him in Group 1. (3) In another Muscogee district (Russell?s District) are four other Massey households: Josiah Massey 75 SC [born 1774/5 in SC] James Massey 42 SC [born 1807/8 in SC] Eli Massey 55 SC [born 1794/5 in SC] Jeremiah Massey 37 SC [born 1812/3 in SC] This group of Masseys appear to be ancestors of Kemis Massey's husband and other Masseys currently living in Muscogee Co. Regrettably, the counties of birth are not shown in this district of Muscogee Co., but it should be emphasized that all of them show a SC birthplace. The Josiah Massey best known to Massey researchers was still living in 1850 in eastern Wake Co., NC. Age was 76 - so born 1773/4, essentially the same age as Josiah of Muscogee Co., GA, but obviously not the same person. The one in Wake Co. married Rebecca Strickland and is mentioned in the recent book by Carla Tate on the Stricklands of NC. Judge Massey's ADDENDUM placed this Josiah as Josiah6 [Drury5, William4, John3, Hezekiah2] which is a reasonable placement. Obviously this Josiah Massey cannot be the one in 1850 Muscogee Co., GA. Josiah Masseys in the 1810-1840 census records are: 1810 Lancster Co., SC 00100-00100 [Josiah b. 1784-1794] 1810 Richland Co., SC 22010-00101 [Josiah b. 1765-1784] 1820 Lancaster Co., SC 310010-20010 [Josiah b. 1775-1794] 1840 Cherokee Co., GA 001001-00001 [Josiah b. 1800-1810] 1840 Marietta, Cobb Co., GA 0001101-00002001 [Josiah b. 1790-1800] 1840 Muscogee Co., GA 000010001-00100001 [Josiah b. 1770-1780] Since it became obvious that the Josiah in Muscogee Co, is not the same as the Josiah of about the same age of Wake Co., Judge Massey ultimately placed [also BY HYPOTHSIS] the one in Richland Co., SC and Muscogee Co.as a grandson of James3[Hezekiah2.] This is highly unlikely. As Bill Massey, author of MASSEY GENEALOGY 2000, has pointed out, almost nothing is known about descendants of James3. For another line that Judge Massey attempted to place as descendants of this James3 [the Masseys of Giles Co., TN], DNA testing showed that the line is question has DNA totally different from the Group 1 folks, most of who have a documented descent from Hezekiah2, Joseph2, or ichard2. The testors from the Giles Co. group have been placed in Group 6 along with a Massey family from co. Cork, Ireland. Hopefully, we'll soon have DNA results from a descendant of Josiah Massey of Muscogee Co., GA. The next research step will be based on whether or not the result show the testor to be or not to be in DNA Group 1.
