Last year about this time we discussed Eli Massey of Gwinnett CO, GA. Eli was married to Catherine Bolten . They had a son, Affenacious Massey, my g-g-grandfather. Carla Tate stated that after 1840 Eli fell off the Gwinnett census, but appeared in Paulding CO in 1850. I recently visited the GA state archives, and from Family Search, found the following: "Eli Massey, Residence, Paulding CO, Ga, Age 67, estimated birth date, 1783, birthplace, North Carolina." I was researching my husband's ancestor, so I did not look up microfiche , etc., on Eli. However, I quickly checked every Paulding CO book on the shelf for a reference to him. From the book, "A History of Paulding CO," by Lucien E. Roberts, July 15, 1933, I found the following: "Mt. Zion Baptist Church was constituted December 7, 1844. The following (people) took part in the organization: Bozem N. Adair, Ely Massa . . ." and several others. This is consistent with the actions of Eli Massey of Gwinnett who founded Rockbridge Baptist Church in 1819 (source: Gwinnett Historical Society). I could not locate this church, but found the cemetery. Eli is not buried there unless he has an unmarked grave. As I stated last year, neither is he buried at Bethesda Baptist Church ( Gwinnett ) with Affenacious and other kin. More credence that Eli did not die in Gwinnett . Carla had written that Eli left Gwinnett and went to Paulding CO, GA. He received 40 acres in the 6th GA land lottery of 1832, the "Gold Lottery." According to Marvin Nash Worthy in his book, "History of Gwinnett CO, GA, 1818-1993," the land was obtained by treaty from the Cherokee Indians. It included land to the north, northeast, and northwest of Gwinnett . Paulding lies to the northwest of Gwinnett and was one of 10 counties that made up the original "Cherokee CO." Many settlers went there looking for gold. Eli is listed on the 1840 Gwinnett Census, and as Carla stated, not on the Gwinnett 1850 census. However, on the 1870 Paulding CO census, I find Roena Massey, age 58, place of birth, North Carolina. According to Carla, Roena was the daughter of Eli and Catherine. But most fascinating is what I find on the 1850 Paulding CO census: "Eli Massey, age 67, male, farmer, place of birth, North Carolina." In the same household is listed, "Bonny, age 31, female, born in North Carolina." Eli's wife Catherine died before 1850. So I immediately assumed that he had remarried and Bonny was his wife. But then I considered that perhaps she was his daughter. Is Bonny his wife or his daughter? Regardless, it is unlikely that Eli Massey of Gwinnett / Paulding is the same Eli Massey of South Carolina (as Judge Massey suspected). And most definitely he is not the Eli Massey of Muscogee CO, GA. That Eli's children had different names from Eli's in Gwinnett . I plan to visit the Paulding CO Historical Society and also return to the GA archives to see what else I can find. I learned nothing of importance at the Gwinnett Historical Society (that I did not already know). Eli is not listed in the book, " Gwinnett CO, GA, Deaths 1818-1989." Also, nothing is left from the 19th Century fire that destroyed the Gwinnett courthouse, except marriage records. I also want to see if I can locate Eli's grave in Paulding . Regardless, any info on Bonny Massey will be valued. Also, if any of you more seasoned genealogists could offer tips on what specifically to look up at the archives, I'd be deeply thankful. In fact, any tips will be helpful. Debra Massey Houston
