This is the connection according to William Massey's MASSEY GENEALOGY 2000. However, neither this book nor any other reference cites any source for placing his 2d wife Elizabeth as Elizabeth Washington Lanier. One would need to order his book or review it in a library, then go through his entire arguments critically to decide if they accept the case he makes for Richard (1) b. 13 Aug. 1661of Puddington, Cheshire, England; d. sometime after 1700 in Charles City Co., VA being our emigrant ancestor. This Richard (1) is shown as the father of Hezekiah(2), Joseph(2), and Richard(3), the same three brothers ascribed [almost certainly incorrectly - see my posts in the Rootweb archives] by Judge Massey to "John Jr" alleged son of the immigrant John Mace/Marsey of 1636. Hezekiah(2) 1m. ---- ----, 2m. Elizabeth ----; Joseph(2) im. ---- ----, 2m. Elizabeth ----; Richard(2) m. Ann Pettipool (my ancestors.) In the new nen book, Richard(1) is shown as son of Edward Massey and Alice Brathwayt; grandson of Sir William Massey and Catherine Herbert; g gs of John Massey, Esq. and Elizabeth Aston; etc. back to old Hamon de Mascy (born prob. abt.1040.) From the three wives listed (Alice Brathwayt, Catherine Howard, and Elizabeth Aston) , 6 descents from King Edward I are shown in the book. Best regards, Theron Smith.
