    1. [MASSEY-L] DRURY MASSEYs of the Surry and Prince George Co., VA Branch of US MASSEYs
    2. tl2smith
    3. For several months I have wanted to organize all the known early Drury Masseys (also spelled Drewry) in my branch of the Masseys into one chart showing how they are related to each other. With one or two exceptions, I think I have finally succeeded. Principal sources were: Ref1: Judge Frank A. MASSEY, MASSEY GENERALOGY ADDENDUM (1979) Ref2: William W. Massey, MASSEY GENEALOGY 2000 (2000) The generation numbers and the outline of the Massey branch of current interest shown in the more recent Ref2 have been used in the following outline. Since many Massey list subscribers are familiar with Ref1, I have made mention of all the Drury/Drewrys occurring in that publication. Several of the Drurys in Ref1 appear to be incorrectly placed there, and, I have shown them in the outline below where more recent research indicates they should be placed. To effectively interpret what I have presented here, one must be aware of the generation numbers attached to each Massey person. There's no other practical way to keep from mixing up the many Masseys of the same given name. Note, as an example, "4.john Massey" and "John(4) Massey" both refer to a 4th generation John Massey. 1. Richard (1) Massey (1661 England - abt. 1799, VA) of co. Chester, Eng. and Charles City Co., VA, emigrant ancestor of the Surry and Prince George Co., VA MASSEYs [based on Ref2.] Ref2 also gives an exhaustive account of many ancestors of Richard(1) which offers a fresh alternative to the many accounts seen on the Internet. 2. Hezekiah Massey (1680/5 VA - 1727 NC) 3. John Massey (abt. 1705/6 - 1777 NC) 4. John Massey (abt. 1750-1788 Lincoln Co., NC) m. Winnie Daniels? (She 2m. Stephen Senter.) This John (4) appears in Ref1, 304, but is incorrectly placed as son of Richard(3) rather than John (3) 5. Drury Massey (abt. 1771-1836 Cape Girardeau Co., MO); m. Jenny MASTERS. This Drury was co-executor of his father's 1788 will; the other Co-executor was close cousin John(4) Massey [from Hezekiah(3); Hezekiah(2)] This Drury appears in Ref2, 74, but does not appear in Ref(1.) Ref1 incorrectly shows Drury(4) b. 1750 [from Wm(3); Hezekiah(2); see later] as son of John(4.) 6. Dr. Drury Massey Jr (1797 Lincoln Co., NC - 1865 Bollinger Co., MO) m. Susannah ----. Drury(6) appears in Ref1, 296, but was incorrectly placed as son of a Green(5) Massey [from William(4);John(3);Hez(2)] Drury(6) is ancestor of list subscriber Hugh Massey. 5. William Massey (apparently of Lincoln Co., TN and Spartanburg Co., SC) 6. Drury Massey(abt. 1785 - ?) Probably the Drury who moved to Washington Co., AL [Ref1,309] 5. John Massey Jr. Ref1, 305,307 shows s son for John(4) but the one shown is cousin John(4) Massey [from Hezekiah(3); Hezekiah(2)] In 2002, W.W. Massey provided a reference that supports John(4) having a son John Jr(5.) The current compiler has concluded that this John(5) can probably be identified as John of Giles Co., TN - John (5) Massey (1786/7 - 1859 MO) who m. Mary Henry (probably from one of the many Henry families in Lincoln Co.,NC). This John is ancestor of list subscriber Bill Massey of Franklin, TN. 6. Drury Massey (1814/5 NC - ?) 1m. unknown; 2m. Eleanor HAYNES. 4. William(4) Massey 5. Green Massey - the one shown incorrectly by Ref1 as father of Dr. Drury (6) Massey above is said by Ref1, 297 BY HYPOTHESIS to maybe have the following: 6. Drury Massey(abt. 1829, MO - aft. 1850, Alexander Co., IL) 3. Richard Massey [not known to have any Drury descendants, but Ref1 incorrectly placed at least one Drury descending from Richard (3)] 3. William Massey 4. Drury Massey of Johnston and Cumberland Co., NC (b. abt. 1850 - 1820 Cumberland Co., NC) Ref1 has two accounts of this Drury, incorrectly placed in both accounts: (1) Ref1, 295, placed this Drury as son of Wm(4); John(3); Hez(2) (2) Ref1, 304, placed this Drury as son of John(4) of Lincoln Co., NC; [from John(3); Hez(2) as above] with 2d wife, Barbara Needham [sic! should be Barbara BRYAN] This John(4), as seen above, did have a son Drury(5), but it was the Drury b. 1766/7 who m. Jennie Masters. Descendants of Drury Massey of Johnston and Cumberland Co., NC were puzzled about his placement in Ref1 as as son of John of Lincoln Co., NC Ref2, 76, placed this Drury(4) as son of William(3), etc. Correspondent Len Thomas concluded that there should be two Williams between Drury of Johnston and Cumberland Co., NC and Hezekiah(2), making this one Drury(5.) 5. Needham Massee(1779-1859 Macon Co., GA) 6. Dr. Drewery Washington Massee (1819-1903 Mason Co., GA) [Ref1, 295 and 304] Note spelling change. 5. Drury Massey Jr (1786-) [Ref1, 295 and 304] 2. Joseph Massey 3. John Massey 4. Arthur Massey(abt. 1836 - 1801 Kershaw Co., SC.) Ref2 was the first account to place Arthur as part of the Surry and Prince George Co., VA Branch of US MASSEYs. Ref1 had placed him in a different branch of Masseys. 5. Alston Massey (1762 VA - 1854 Monroe Co., AL) 6. Elias Massey (1793-1850) of SC and Leake Co., MS 7. Drewry Washington Massey (1815 SC 1891 Monroe Co., AL [Ref1, 397] 8. Drewry Alexander Massey (1854-1928, Monroe Co., AL) [Ref1, 397] 5. Drewry Massey (1765 VA - aft 1821 SC) [Ref1,401] 6. ---- Massey 7. Drury E. Massey (1836 AL) [Ref1,401] 2. Richard Massey who m. Anne Pettipool. This thirs son of Richard(1) is the ancestor of the current compiler. No records of Drurys in this sub-branch/ A follow up post will concentrate on Drury (4) Massey b. 1750 his wives, children, military service, residences, census reports, and differing accounts of his date of death.
