Judith and William had a son , William b. abt 1745 and married to Delphia Brodway. You have a William married to a Sarah Freeman. Question; was this William the son of William of 1765 and Delphia ? Can you clarify this for me ? << I've been looking for the father and mother of William III b. 1785 d. 1824 married to Sarah Freeman in Franklin Co., NC in 1808. This Wm. III is my ggggrand father.>> First of all, William(3) Massey DID marry Judith -----, but there's no evidence whatsoever that she was a PETTIPOOL. Since William and Judith had a son, Pettipool Massey, an earlier researcher speculated that William's wife may have been a PETTIPOOL. We now know that the parents of William(3) were Richard(2) Massey and Anne PETTIPOOL (daughter of William Pettipool Sr and Elizabeth ----.) Pettipool Massey was named for his William's MOTHER - not for William's wife's maiden name. William(4), who 2m. Delphia Broadway, appears to be son of William(3) and Judith but rigorous proof is lacking. This William(4) appears to be the one (a) who had land near Pettipool Massey and (b) who is in the 1790 Wake Co., NC census near the many other Masseys of the Moccasin Creek area (the boundary between Wake and Franklin COs., NC.) This William(4) had sons William iii (5) and John(5) and several daughters. The William who m. Sarah Freeman does not appear to be this William iii, although there have been attempts to make that placement. Actually, Sarah's William appears to have lived in northern Franklin Co. near Warren Co. More than one researcher have "busted their pick" trying to place this William. Theron Smith.
