    1. Re: [MASSEY] MASSEY Digest, Vol 3, Issue 113
    2. In a message dated 9/20/2008 3:01:51 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, massey-request@rootsweb.com writes: My husband and are are writing a book on the descendants of Thomas & Phebe Taylor Massey and I live to put Samuel's story in the book. I just need that link. Hi Karen, Since your husband's and my son's DNA results are only two genetic markers distant, I'd love to find our link to Thomas and Phebe, too. Our family is descended from Thomas Massey (1784-1822) and Elizabeth Estell (born in NJ). They lived in Philadelphia and Thomas is my "brick wall." I have not been able to get back beyond him -- no clue as to what his lineage was. My best theory is that he may well have been the son of another Thomas since the tradition for several generations of his direct descendants was to name the eldest son for the father. Thus, to add to my confusion, there are 3 generations of eldest son Thomas Masseys in our family tree. BTW there are several Sarah/Sallies in our pedigree. Sallie was a common nickname for Sarah -- at least in our family tree. We have a Sarah Ann (June 1863 - ?), daughter of Thomas Massey (1814-1866) and Rachel Brown, and granddaughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Estell Massey. Sarah Ann married ? Mather. She sometimes appears as Sarah Ann and sometimes as Sallie on various records. Her brother, Joseph Massey (July 1845-Jan 1915), who was my late husband's great-grandfather, also named one of his daughters, Sarah Anna (May 1876-?) after two of his sisters -- Sarah and Anna. My late husband remembered his great-aunt Sarah Anna as "Aunt Sally." She remained a spinster until late in her life, then married John C. Flohr, a widower with at least one son. There were no children of that marriage. Happy History Hunting and regards, Shirley Massey **************Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges? 1. [MASSEY] John Massey of Fairfax VA late 1700s
    2. Brenda Rose
    3. I always enjoy reading the discussions on this list and particularly the tracings of the Massey family back to England. I don't have any idea how I connect, though. Perhaps someone on the list can help me or knows something about this Massey. I have him and his descendants fairly well-documented, but no idea where he came from. John Massey was listed in the VA census in 1782 in Fairfax Co. John Massey (often with sons Thomas and Samuel) shows up in the Fairfax tax lists between 1790 and 1799. John Massey is in the Fairfax Co. Court Order Books for road work in 1789, 1797, and 1798. John is in the Fairfax Co. records as a land owner (can't find my notes for that right now). His son Thomas, probably the older son, married and moved to Georgetown. He spelled his name Marcey, as did his descendants. His son Samuel, probably the younger son, married and lived in what is now Arlington Co. (Marcey Rd. area). He and his descendants also spelled the name Marcey. I suspect that John Massey lived in the same area that Samuel is known to have lived in. If this is so, then John may show up on the District of Columbia records after 1800 since the area which is now Arlington had been Fairfax Co. when it was given to the District. Any help with how this John Massey connects to earlier lines would be appreciated. Thanks, Brenda Payne Rose

Author: KarenMassey13 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.massey/2607.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Yes, I know that Phineas's son Samuel went from Huntington to Armstrong County, PA. In 1805 he was the first lawyer in Armstrong County. He also practiced in Westmoreland and Indiana County. In land record we found that in 1816 he appointed his lawyer,(can't recall his name), to sale his land in Armstrong County because he was now living in Ross County, Ohio. (This is the county where Thomas James lived. He's the man who had the other 2/3 shares of the Mermac Iron Works.) Samuel Massey was in Adams County, Ohio working for Thomas James at the Marble Iron Works. This is the younger Samuel. Samuel's wife was named Sallie in the Armstrong papers but she is named Sarah in the sale of land in Huntington County in 1811. The only problem I have is Phineas's son was probably born around 1770 and the Samuel who went to Missouri says in the 1850 & 1860 Franklin County, Missour census that he was born in 1790 in Pennsylvania. I think he may be the older Samuel's son. The younger Samuel's wife was also named Sarah. In the history of Armstrong County written by ?? Smith, he talks about a map that has the heirs of Samuel Massey listed on it. The lady at the genealogical library in Kittanning says Smith used something called the Gapan Map for alot of his research and nobody knows where this map is. My husband and are are writing a book on the descendants of Thomas & Phebe Taylor Massey and I live to put Samuel's story in the book. I just need that link. Dempsey is most likely descended from Richard4 Massey [abt 1731 - 1811] of the Barton's Creek area of NW Wake and Orange Cos., NC. One or two Dempsey Masseys have been identified as being in this branch of Masseys. The immediate patrilineal ancestry of the earliest Richard of that area has been the subject of two or three books and numerous Internet posts, but, in my opinion is still undetermined.
