I must confess that I am not following up leads of MASSEYs outside the UK, but would be interested to read the chapter(s) on the descent from dear old Hamon. I have been preaching for years that we can not all be descended from him: see my web page http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Cottage/5874/masseymore.html Donald Massey ----- Original Message ----- > > MASSEY GENERALOGY 2000 by William W. >> Need address for the books of Judge Massey. Pat in Ala>> I just now talked to the wife of Judge Massey's younger half brother and she gave me the address of Judge Massey's son, Daniel Massey, who has the reprints for sale. Since I haven't contacted Mr. Massey myself, I won't publish his address on the list, but I will will provide it via private Email to anyone interested. This notice is in regard to the books of the late Judge Frank A. Massey - not to the new book by William W. Massey, who happens to be a 3d cousin of the Judge. The new book is very good on the earliest US Masseys of Prince George, Surry, and Charles City Cos., VA, their descendants to 3 or 4 generations, AND their apparent English ancestries. It does correct some errors in Chapter XIX of the old ADDENDUM. But the new book treats only this one VA branch of the family and doesn't trace the descendants of this VA branch as far toward the present time as Judge Massey's books. Also the other 18 branches of US MASSEYs covered by Judge Masseys books are not treated at all in the new book. So the older books are still needed by beginning Massey researchers. There are a few errors in the old books, but they're the best we have for most Massey lines. Judge Massey attemptied to cover all US branches. And, as is the case with all secondary sources, the lines found therein should be verified with primary or alternative secondary sources - IF YOU CAN IDENTIFY AND FIND THEM. Regards, Theron Smith.
Early this morning I wrote: << >> Also it's an ANCESTRY book. There is some descendency information (2 or 3 generations down from the three brothers and more for descendants of Richard Massey of Barton Creek in NW NC), but the big thrust is concerning the English ancestors and the very first American representatives.l<< This statement is true but is an understatement. 25 pages (in small print, meaning there'a a large amount of information presented) are devoted to the first 3 or 4 generations of descendants of Hezekiah, Joseph, and Richard. This is a complete rewrite and re-analysis (with many sources cited) of what Judge Massey had for this time period and will be very valuable to persons in this group, which includes myself. Judge Massey extended many of these lines down to 2 or 3 (and even 4 in some cases) later generations in his ADDENDUM and beginners will still need to use the Judge's book to tie into this branch from the later generation entry level. In general the new book takes these lines down to the late 1700s amd very early 1800s, whereas ADDENDUM traces many descents down to at least 1850. As an example, on my own line, Judge Massey shows Richard(2), Hezekiah (3), Richard(4), Barrachias(5), Nathaniel Dudley(6). The new book has details on Richard(4) but just gives a simple list of the children of Richard(4). Cheers, Theron Smith. Reg
I'm interested to know if any of you have ever been able to tie all of the Drury Masseys in to one trunk family. The reason I'm inquiring is that my ggggrandfather, John Massey and his wife Mary (Henry?) Massey named their oldest son Drury. Drury was the brother of my gggrandfather John Wesley Massey of Giles/Marshall Counties, TN. "Old John" was born around 1787-89? somewhere in NC before settling in the Giles/Marshall Counties area. I believe if I can get a lead onto the Drurys, I might solve the genealogical puzzle since the name Drury was not that common. If anyone has an idea, I'd be interested to know. Sincerely, William R. (Bill) Massey of Franklin Tennessee, formerly of Lewisburg, Marshall Co., Tennessee [email protected]

Since this is already puplic knowledge from the HELPER ad, and since there's little or no competitive marketing scenario involved, I think it's apprppriate to put it on the list.: Price is $45.00 postpaid; hard bound; 232 pages. Order from the author: William W. Massey Jr. 7703 Deerwood Pointe Jacksonville. FL 32256. I got quick delivery on my copy of the book. I hope to get acquainted with Mr. Massey later and exchange additional data with him. He's a straight (no removes) 3d cousin of Judge Massey and is very respectful of the Judge's compilations although he has some significant disagreement. Do bear in mind that the new book only covers the families from brothers Hezekiah, Joseph, and Richard of VA and NC. Others might want to own it anyway. But there's nothing on Thomas of Marable or Peter Massie of New Kent Co, VA or the Potomac Lines or Arthur Massey of SC. If you're not sure it covers your line, I'll be glad to comment on that aspect of it via private Email.. Also it's an ANCESTRY book. There is some descendency information (2 or 3 generations down from the three brothers and more for descendants of Richard Massey of Barton Creek in NW NC), but the big thrust is concerning the English ancestors and the very first American representatives.l On a different subject, I understand Judge Massey's grandson has re-published his books. If I can find an address, I'll publish that also. Regard, Theron Smith. .
Those of you who are from the Prince George Co., VA MASSEYs - Hezekiah, Joseph, and Richard - wll be interested in a new Massey Book just published: MASSEY GENERALOGY 2000 by William W. Massey. This is an update on Judge Frank Massey's MASSEY ADDENDUM (But of Chapter XIX O N L Y - "Lines from John Massey of Shirley Hundred, 1636 Immigrant"). The sub-title of the book is "Richard Massey of Cheshire, England, 1684, Charles City County, VA, the First Colinial Familt\y ..." The book is advertized on p. 18 of the current GENEALOGICAL HELPER. I can provide an address and cost via private Email to anyone interested. I especially appreciated the fact that it points out in definite terms that Hezekiah, Joseph, and Richard could NOT be from the 1636 immigrant - I've been "preaching" this position for many years but Mr. Massey arrived at the same conclusion independently of me. He also gives an alternative descent from the 1st Hamon de Mascy that is very interesting - I'm still deciding whether it has any "holes: - in any event, it's better documented that the other descents from Hamon floating around on the Internet. There are also numerous tabulated descents from royalty for Richard of Charlles City Co., VA, which will be be interesting to review and critique for many of us - 6 descents from Edward III are shown. Also, of interest to those from Richard Massey of Burton Creek in NW Wake Co., NC, whom some have tried unsuccesfully to graft onto William and Judith Massey of Wake/Frankin Co., NC, is a fresh and provocative approach to showing that this Richard may, after all [as Judge Massey believed] be from Richard, son of Hezekiah. Judge Massey, as well as several list subscribers, including Fount Armstrong, are from Richard Massey of Burton Creek. Regards, Theron Smith.

When you find a document that is hard to read, use a 'see thru' yellow plastic sheet. the words pop right out at you most of the time unless it is completely illegible. Marie
=============================================================== TODAY'S TIP: HARD-TO-READ RECORDS by Diane J. Muir Some original records are faded and hard to read. Other records are worn on the edges, and the first letters of names in the indexes are often missing. Handle fragile pages carefully. Our hands and fingers have natural oils that destroy fragile paper. Handle the books gently. The old leather bindings often are dusty and falling apart. Place the books on a hard surface and turn the pages carefully. Use the palm of your hand to turn pages, taking care not to bend them. If writing is faded, place the page under an ultraviolet light. Also, using a flashlight with a yellow bulb makes the writing more legible. If the first letters of the names are missing, fill in what you think they should be. Don't ever ignore something that might be pertinent. For instance, if you're looking for Millers and you find only the letters "ller," record the finding in your log so you'll know it's a possibility.
This is it. Perfect, and thank you soooooo much. How are you dong? Lor ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, January 31, 2001 6:00 PM Subject: MASSEY-D Digest V01 #8
Hi, I posted abt a year ago, so will repost. I am looking for JAMES M MASSEY b. Jun 1876 TN (unknown county)..died ? I find him last in Hunt Co, TX on 1900 Census with his wife Mary Evelyn Keeling and 3 of his 5 children ( 1 of them my grandfather). But from there I dont know where he went. I havent found them on 1910 census and I was told that Mary died in 1906 possibly in accident with her mother that her father submitted to LDS church in 1917. Mary Evelyn was born in Roane Co,TN. The census records indicate that James was also born in TN. I have been searching this line for several years, would apprecaite anyone's help! Looking for Birthplace in TN, his parents, and death place. At least 3 of his children came to Oklahoma by 1920. Also, there is 3 James M Masseys in Hunt Co at same time. The other set is Father & son...the older James was married to a Margaret. I have found no connection to them as yet. ANY HELP APPRECIATED!!! Thanks Ann Massey

I am new to the Massey list and am hoping that someone has ties to the Massey's of Lincoln County, TN and the surrounding area, where my search has taken me - and then abruptly ended. I am looking for two Massey women: 1. Elizabeth Massey, b. November 27, 1822 in TN (unknown county), married Henry P. Cowen in 1849 in Missouri and died in Hickory County, Missouri in 1901. 2. Mary Massey, b. March 9, 1817, Tennessee (said to be the daughter of Thomas - no proof), married Chesley Pierce about 1840 in Tennessee and died in 1866 in Hickory County, Missouri. This marriage occurred probably in Lincoln County, TN or a neighboring county. There was another marriage that occurred about the same time frame between Hulda Massey(daughter of Joshua Massey and Elizabeth Ellis Massey, m. 1808 Jefferson Co., TN) and John "Jack" Pierce, said to be a brother of Chesley. Also listed in Hickory County, Missouri census records is Benjamin Massey, b. about 1817 in Tennessee. I strongly suspect that these Massey's are siblings or perhaps cousins, but have no proof. I hope that someone is researching the Massey's in the Lincoln County, TN and neighboring areas. I have information on these families after their move to Hickory County, Missouri that I am willing to share. Thank you. Sarah
