1. [MASSEY-L] 1761 Will of Joseph Massey(2)
2. Theron Smith
3. Eleanor, a regular contributor to the Massey list, recently sent me and others a private posting which motivated me to refocus on the 1761 will of Joseph(2), brother of Hezekiah(2) and Richard(2) Massey. Eleanor's posting was in regard to an entry in MARRIAGES OF SOME VA RESIDENTS 1607-1800 by D.F. Wulfeck, which quoted an item from the following 1979 book: Mavis Parrott Kelsey, M.D., and Mary Wilson Kelsey (of Housotn, TX), THE FAMILY OF JOHN MASSIE 1743-c.1830 REVOLUTIONARY PATRIOT OF LOUISA COUNTY, VIRGINIA. The family traced is that of George Massie Sr (1760/70 - 1837) of Louisa Co., VA. George's father in John R. Massie of New Kent Co., VA whose ancestry is not definitely known. This family is discussed in Chap. XIV, p. 237, of Judge Frank Massey's MASSEY ADDENDUM, where two hypotheses regarding John's father are given. On p.1 of the Kelsey book is the same abstract of the will that Eleanor quoted: "One J. Joseph Massie of Brunswick County, son of John Massie, recorded a will on May 25, 1761 in Lawrenceville, Brunswick Co., VA (Will book 3, p. 368) The children named were: John, Joseph, Thomas, James. Amy, Sarah, Rececca, Agnes, Elizabeth, Winifred, Lucy, and Frances. We do not know anything about this first son, but it is most unlikely that he was our John." The will in question was well known to Judge Massey. He had a photostatic copy of it and an aggresively edited transcription of it is published on p. 184-186 of Boddie's HISTORICAL SOUTHERN FAMILIES, VOLUME XVIII (1973.) As the Kelsey authors suspected, this Joseph is not a forebearer of the Massies of New Kent and Louisa Cos., VA. It is the will of Joseph(2) Massey, brother of Hezekiah(2) and Richard(2) Massey, all of which are placed as sons of Richard(1) Massey of co. Chester, Eng. and Charles City Co., VA in William W. Massey's MASSEY GENEALOGY 2000. Eleanor has records that strongly indicate this Joseph(2)is her ancestor. Although, Judge Massey thought that the father of Joseph(2) might be a hypothetical John Massey, that hypothesis has been disproved. (See MASSEY GENEALOGY 2000 and my posts on the subject in the Rootsweb MASSEY Archives.) The will in question does NOT in any way suggest that this Joseph's father was named John. Whoever was the original abstractor of the will made at least two mistakes! The following text in the recorded will: "I, Joseph Massie of ... County of Brunswick ... unto my son John ..." became the following in the incorrect abstract: "... J. Joseph Massie of Brunswick County, son of John Massie... " As is generally the case with wills, nothing in this will mentioned a father. Also leading initials were rarely, if ever, used in the 1700s. More bad news! From p. 82 of MASSEY GENEALOGY 2000: "Several phrases were omitted when the will was copied into the record book, e.g., the devise to son John is incomplete and the bequest to daughter Rebecca Wise is missing. Thus it is possible that other phrases and words were also omitted" Best regards to all, Theron Smith 6-great grandson of Richard(2)

1. [MASSEY-L] Jonathan MASSEY/1773-possibly 1863/NC>TN>IN>KY
2. Searching for information on the family of Jonathan MASSEY b. about 1773 in NC who married Frankie DAVIS (daughter of John & Elizabeth) b. about 1779. They were married on November 2, 1797 in Grainger county TN. Jonathan is shown on the tax lists for Grainger county until 1805. He later appears on the census for 1820 & 1830 in Bourbon county KY. ( I believe this might be him) The years 1840 & 1850 show the family residing in Owen county IN. Jonathan and Frankie were the parents of 6 children that I know of. Issac b. 1807 TN m. Nancy Hooten (d/o Littleton & Anna) on 2-11-1830 Lucy b. 1809 KY m. John Evans (s/o David & Elizabeth) on 3-24-1831 Willis b. about 1813 KY m. Harriet Gillaspy (d/o Martin) on 10-6-1836 Jacob b. 10-6-1814 KY m. Jane Moderell on 3-22-1838 Elizabeth b. about 1816 in KY m. Emanuel Hooten (s/o Littleton & Anna) on 7-29-1838 Jane b. about 1824 KY m. Hiram Carter on 10-5-1839 All of these children married in Owen county IN. So I am inclined to think that the Jonathan MASSEY listed in Bourbon county KY in 1830-1840 census is not one and the same. This would also negate the thought that my Jonathan is the same as the one listed as buried in Paris, Bourbon county KY and died on December 4, 1863. However, my Jonathan dissappears from the Owen county IN census after 1850. It is thought that the line of my Jonathan is that his father is Thomas Massey b. about 1749 in NC; Thomas b. about 1738; Joseph b. about 1700-1705 MD; possibly William prior to that. However, I lack any proof and would love to be able to put this all together. Thanks for any assistance Wishing you ancestral searching success, Debbie Jennings Please check websites below: Sweet Owen County IN http://www.angelfire.com/in4/sweetowen/ Franklin CountyVermont Genweb Franklincounty VT

1. [MASSEY-L] Massey (Massy) & Ivester - NC/SC/Ga - Seeking Nancy Massey
2. Good Morning Everyone, I have recently discovered that I need to be looking at the Massey surname. I am descended from a Jacob IVESTER and his wife Nancy E. who appear in the 1850 census of Walker Co., Georgia. In 1860 they are in Craighead Co., Arkansas and by 1870 they are in Stoddard Co., Missouri. Thanks to some funeral records in Missouri it now appears that Nancy E.'s maiden name was MASSEY(Massy). In one census record she says she was born in South Carolina and in another census record she says she was born in North Carolina. Nancy E. MASSEY was born about 1828. She married Jacob IVESTER but I do not yet know where or when. However, their children were: John A. - 1843 Asa Monroe - 1846 Reuben - 1849 Elizabeth - 1849 Joseph H. - 1857 William R. - 1859 Jacob Foster - 1860 George W. - 1864 Benjamin Franklin - 1870 I am hoping that one of has a missing Nancy Massey that might match up in some way with this Nancy. I have been hunting for her maiden name since 1968 and am so excited that I finally have a direction to go in. I really would appreciate any help and advise anyone might have. Thanks so very much - Emma

3. I am new to the list. I am searching Nancy Massey (b.ca1803) who married Sterling Smith (b.ca1803) in 1827 in Knox County TN. They lived in TN until after the 1850 census when they moved to Jackson County IL with most of their children. Is anyone else interested in this couple? Does anyone know anything about them? Their son, Sterling Jr. put "Indian" as his Nativity on his Civil War papers. 2. ANNA FARRIS
3. Hello All, I have not posted in a while so I will try once again to see if anyone has anything about my John in in their info. John Holland Massey born 1856 in Ms. I think he was married rwice but can no proof of a marriage of any kind for him, I know his possible second wife was Sarah Jane Burney. She is listed on the 1880 Attala Co.,Ms census with her Parents but they only give have initials for everyone in the family. Her father was B. Burney age 53 and her Mother was V.A. , she had several sisters and brothers in the this census. John had two daughters in his home in 1900 census of Caddo Parish, La., which is the first and only census I have found him on, the daughters are Ola and E.( I think this may be Eunice ) their ages are to old to be the daughters of Sarah. John died in 1910 before the census was taken, they had moved from La. to Ark. in Miller Co. and were living in Sulfur Township. Please help I am going in circles retracing all of my info to see if I have any thing I've missed. Always searching, Anna

2. Donna Dixon
3. I am looking for HELP! with Berry Massey (PLEASE) He's a big step in finding out my line 100% so could someone give me a hand. Berry Massey was the son of Elias and Elizabeth GATEWOOD Massey (proven by Rev. War penison App.) he was born 1805 cir in NC. he is on the 1840 and 1850 Meckinburg CO. NC census. in 1840 he lists 1 son under 5 1 son 5-10, himself 20-30, one female 20-30, in the 1850 census he is listed as age 45 wife Mary 37 1 son Ambrose age 10 and 1 daughter Martha 8, what happen to the 2 older sons ? Is this Mary his second wife? His mother Elizabeth is in the HH of Samuel Yadell and wife Sarah (B) 1800 this is right, but in 1860 census Elizabeth is in HH with Samuel Farmer and wife Sarah (B) 1800 I am 100% sure this is the same Sarah Massey, child of Elizabeth and Elias Massey, Elias died Oct 12 1827 Elizabeth made penison apps in1845 and again in 1856, Elizabeth died 1864 in Lancaster Co. SC living with her daughter Sarah Farmer, wife if Arch Farmer. Elizabeth says she had 15 chldren by Elias but records only name 9,by 1856 all her children were dead but 2 and 1 was Sarah, who was the other? Elizabeth also states in her statement in 1845 that her oldest child if living would be 60 years of age and the youngest has been grown and married twice many years age. Elizabeth also states the first family bible they had with the ages of there children was destroyed when there house burnt. Is Barry the son married twice? Sarah in her statement after Elizabeth's death states that she Sarah Farmer is the daughter and only heir of the above Elizabeth Massey, in 1867 Sarah Farmer was made sole heir of Elizabeth Massey. Can you help? Thanks a bunch! Donna
