    1. [MASSEY-L] MASSEY SURNAME DNA PROJECT
    2. E. Ray Hill
    3. Hi Massey researchers: My MASSEY family has been researched back to Richard Massey b/c1696 VA, d/1740 VA, m/Ann Pettypool b/c1698 VA, d/1770 VA (based on research of my cousin T. L. Smith, and others). Since some of you seem to be interested in starting a MASSEY Surname DNA Project, I thought I would tell you about our HILL surname project, which we started about two or three weeks ago. We now have 23 people participating (direct male descendants of the HILL surname). At the risk of this sounding like spam, I will not mention the company we are working with, or the price, however, if anyone is interested, please contact me for that information. To get it started we needed six people to participate, in order to get a discount. Then I was selected to administer the project for our group. Those interested in participating only needed to send me their name, address, phone # and email address. I was provided an online form for ordering DNA kits and administering the project. When we got the kits, we swabbed the insides of our cheeks to collect DNA samples (bucal cells), put the tip of the swab in a container provided in the kit, and sent it in. If our DNA matches someone else, they will also notify that person, provided the proper waiver forms were filled out. As project administrator, I am responsible for reporting the results to the whole group, either by email or by setting up a website. I am currently designing web pages for a website. Numbers, not names, will always used for reporting, thus maintaining privacy. It's that simple. Our HILL List Administrator and another Hill family researcher were a tremendous help in getting this all started. We contacted descendants of the major family groups and encouraged them to participate in order to get a good cross section of DNA for our databank. One person even agreed to sponsor six people to take the test. Our test results will be completed in a few weeks. We are hoping to find matching DNA between some of the family groups, thus indicating a common ancestor... something that has yet to be proven by traditional methods. I also hope to prove who my Gr Gr Gr Grandfather Hill was. Based on years of research, I think I know who he was, but have never been able to prove it by primary sources of data. So, if my DNA matches that of a descendant of this person, I will have the proof I need, based on both my research and on the DNA results. Of course we don't know how successful this is going to be, but there are enough of us excited about it to give it a try. Who knows, maybe it will lead to some new discoveries, since many of us have run out of research alternatives. For some great sources on DNA testing, use the Google search engine and enter the words "DNA Genealogy" in the search window. You will find all kinds of information. Best wishes, E. Ray Hill [email protected] PS. If you want an idea as to how many family surnames are involved in DNA testing, check out this website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~allpoms/genetics1a.html. It will surprise you.

    3. Mike, I checked on file://worldconnect.rootsweb.com for Lahoma Massey, since I didn't have her in my database. I found her and her parents were listed as Jeptha Massey Jr, and Anna Meadows. From there, I checked my database, and this is what I have, going backwards from Jeptha. Jeptha Massey Jr & Anna Meadows Jeptha Massey Sr & Mary Sowards John Massey & Sarah Strong James Massey & Rachel Jayne Nicholas Massey & Mary Nicholas (b England, came to America) & Anne John Massey I & Sarah Birde Hope this helps. 2. Carla Tate
    3. The Boon family has done this. You can find the web site with the published results by doing a google search for Boon +DNA. The Stricklands are doing this now through Brigham Young University. I would urge you not to use Brigham Young University to do this study, because they are very disorganized in their administration of these projects at this time (if the Strickland project is any indication). The Boons used another source (a private organization I believe) other than Brigham Young University. I would also urge looking at doing both the male (Massey surname only) lines and the female descendancy lines (mitochondrial DNA) at the same time. 1. [MASSEY-L] Eli Massey, son of Pettipool and Celia
    2. Carla Tate
    3. The above Eli Massey who married in Catherine Bolton 1807 and was probably born about 1783 in Wake or Franklin Counties, NC was still on the Franklin Co. NC tax lists in 1811. He should have been on the Franklin Co. 1810 census, but is not listed in the index. I am going to go person by person and check the entire census. Catherine's father died in 1813, and I believe that this Eli was the one that is on the 1820 Fairfield Co. SC census showing 3 sons and 1 daughter. They are still there in 1830, but only William (a son?) shows up on the 1840 index (per Judge Massey's books). In 1850 there is an Eli living with daughter Rainey (Roena?) in Paulding Co. GA; Catherine is not with them so may be dead already. I am not sure where they were in 1840. To complicate things more, Catherine may have had a maternal grandparent that was a Massey. I have long suspected a connection to William Massey of Wake Co., but cannot prove it because of the scarcity of records about this William. Catherine's brother Sherwood paid Lydia Massey's (Eli's sister) taxes for her for years; Pettipool's land was next door to James and Sarah Boulton's (Catherine's parents). Some of Eli's brothers had already gone to SC, but were in different counties from Fairfield. Catherine's younger sister Dianah married Reddick Massey, son of Frederick Massey and Millie Chamblee. Catherine's niece Thanie Bolton married Elijah Massey, son of Hezekiah. They moved to Alabama where they died. Reddick and Dianah moved to Georgia, I believe after Dianah's and Catherine's mother died around 1826. Any info on the above people, particularly Eli and Catherine, would be appreciated. Sarah YATES as James(6) b. 1829 and son of Eli (5)Massey [---- (4) Massey; James(3) Massey; Hezekiah(2) Massey] but there's something wrong here. Inconsistently, but perhaps more accurately, on p. 335, the James in 1850 Muscogee Co., GA (Kemis's ancestor) is alternatively shown as James (6) son of Eli (5) Masssey [Pettipool(4), William(3), Richard(2)]. Judge Massey never completely settled the ancestry of this James b. abt. 1806 to his satisfaction. This line needs a lot of work - I'm hoping Kemis can spearhead a project in this area! Many of my own Masseys were in Muscogee Co., GA in 1850. They were related, but only distantly to Kemis's James(6) - probably 4th cousins if James is from Pettipool(4); 5th cousins if he's from ----(4) Massey. My Muscogee line was Nathanial Dudley Massey(6), b. 1822/23, d. of illness while in Confederate service, son of Barachias (5) Massey [Richard(4), Hezekiah(3), Richard(2), Richard(1).] Best regards, Theron Smith

    3. Researching: Duke, Evans, Hickey, Mays, Rosamond, Songer, and Camp for me Researching: Brooks, Chambers, Massey, Fountain, and Smith for my hubbie Hi, I received this from another email list. I looked at it for GA, it's not a lot. But it's a start. Maybe you can find something for you. kemis From: Poor House Lady Sent: Saturday, June 01, 2002 7:51 AM Subject: POORHOUSE Information The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We just posted a lot of new material and have almost totally reorganized your page. That's because so many of you responded to our questions with a great deal of more specific information. When we used your photos or quotes we cited you as the source. But we want to thank the many of you who simply offered suggestions or clarifications. And that's the best way for a clearinghouse to work! Among other things, there is a new photo album and a timeline based on quoted excerpts from many of your local histories, etc. Here is a tip to help you follow all of this: FIRST there was a city almshouse in Poughkeepsie, then that almshouse became a county poorhouse, then the city & county divided up their poor relief system, and the county built a new county poorhouse in 1863 in Oak Summit near Millbrook in the town of Washington, and then the city of Poughkeepsie built a new City almshouse on the old site in 1868-69. Whew! IMPORTANT NOTE! If you want to see the latest information posted ... you will probably need to click REFRESH or RELOAD on every page to which you go that you may have visited recently. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on on your state on the table of states, and then if the county is there, click on it. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)
