    1. [MASSEY-L] Nancy Massey (daughter of Reuben??)
    2. Do any Massey researchers have information on Nancy Massey who married Thomas Steele? Nancy would have been born about 1820 and Thomas about 1818. They were in Monroe County, (W)VA in the 1840 and 1850 census. In 1850, they were two houses from Reuben and Margaret Massey and I am wondering if perhaps Reuben and Margaret could be the parents of Nancy??? Thanks in advance for any help. Judy :)

    3. Bettie Edwards made two corrections to the referenced post: (1) "It is believed Elizabeth Massey was married to William D. Algiers [not Thomas, as my older source had it] because of a will of John Todd, Laurens Co., Ga dated 1819 in which both William and Elizabeth are mentioned." (2) "Drewry Massey was not in the Revolutionary War that I know of.. He is a Civil Patriot as a result of serving as Grand Juror- August. 1779, Juror - May 1781 and Tax Assessor - May 1780." [Providing supplies or services to the Revoultionary forces or serving on a jury in one of the states supporting independence also makes a descendant eligible to join the DAR.] Theron.

    1. [MASSEY-L] Drury Massey of Franklin, Johnston and Cumberland Cos., NC 6 Oct 2002

    3. On 20 Sep 2002. Bettie requested information on the ancestryof Drury Massey who had will in Cumberland Co., NC. In my 27 Sep post, I did a summary of all known Masseys named Drury or Drewry of the Surry and Prince George Co., VA Branch of US MASSEYs with an indication that I'd do a follow up on Drury (4) Massey b. 1750 his wives, children, military service, residences, census reports, and differing accounts of his date of death. My principal sources were: Ref1: Judge Frank A. MASSEY, MASSEY GENERALOGY ADDENDUM (1979) Ref2: William W. Massey, MASSEY GENEALOGY 2000 (2000) 1. Richard (1) Massey (1661 England - abt. 1799, VA) of co. Chester, Eng. and Charles City Co., VA, emigrant ancestor of the Surry and Prince George Co., VA MASSEYs [based on Ref2.] Ref2 also gives an exhaustive account of many ancestors of Richard(1) which offers a fresh alternative to the many accounts seen on the Internet. 2. Hezekiah Massey (1680/5 VA - 1727 NC) 3. William Massey 4. Drury Massey of Johnston and Cumberland Co., NC (b. abt. 1850 - 1820 Cumberland Co., NC) Ref1 has two accounts of this Drury, incorrectly placed in both accounts: (1) Ref1, 295, placed this Drury as son of Wm(4); John(3); Hez(2) (2) Ref1, 304, placed this Drury as son of John(4) of Lincoln Co., NC; [from John(3); Hez(2) as above] with 2d wife, Barbara Needham [sic! should be Barbara BRYAN] Ref2, 76, placed this Drury(4) as son of William(3), etc. Correspondent Len Thomas (a descendant of Needham) had earlier placed Drury in the William(3) in the Hezekiah(2)/William(3) branch but concluded that there should be two Williams between Drury of Johnston and Cumberland Co., NC and Hezekiah(2), making this one Drury(5.) Len made a good case for Drury (4) being married twice and it was noted that Ref1 had two accounts of this Drury, also an indication that he was probably married twice. First, to a daughter of Thomas Hunt with whom he had a son: 5. Josiah Massey whose wife appear to be Rebecca ---- An apparent 2d marriage and the only one noted by his descendants was abt. 1778 to Barbara BRYAN [not Barbara NEEDHAM] daughter of William Bryan (probably descended from Needham Bryan) and Edith SMITH. Five children mentioned: 5. Needham Massey (spelling later changed to MASSEE), b. 1779; d. 22 July 1859, Marshallville, Macon Co., GA; m. Sarah Little. 11 or 12 children. One of whom was: 6. Dr. Drewery Washington Massee (1819-1903 Mason Co., GA) [Ref1, 295 and 304] 5. Drewry W. Massey, b. 1785/6, d. 1844/52, Cumberland Co., NC m. Sophia Porter; no children; said to have raised Warren's children. [Ref1, 295 and 304] 5. Warren Massey; maybe n. twice(1811, Nancy McDougal; 1816, Anne Martinlean?; 2 children (Christilla and Duncan G. McKeva MASSEE) who were adopted by their uncle, Drewry 5. Mary Massey m. ---- ROSS 5. Elizabeth Massey; m. Thomas Algiers (Bettie's ancestor.) The statement in Ref1 that Drury(4) was an officer in the Revolution may be incorrect. Len mentioned that Drury and his son Needham were members of the Society of Cincinnatus on the strength of William(3) being an officer in the Revolution. Bettie Edwards recently stated that Drury was in the Revolution with descendant(s)in the DAR. Len Thomas's research indicated that Drury lived in Granville, Bute (later Franklin), Wake, Johnston, Wake, and Cumberland Cos., NC 1790 Johnson Co., NC census: Drury Massey 14301 (indicates 4 sons, wife, 2 daus, and 1 slave) 1800 missing in NC census 1810 Cumberland Co., NC: Drury Massy 20201-20111-2 slaves 1820 Cumberland Co., NC: Drury Massey Sr. 100021-01001 Apparently Drury Massey(4) owed a debt to the estate of Captain William Jeffreys of Franklin Co., NC. Stephen E. Bradley Jr's 1994 FRANKLIN NORTH CARLINA LOOSE ESTATE PAPERS, p. 37, footnote 241, reportedly stated or implied that Drury Massy was dead as of 13 Dec. 1802. This reference was the basis for the statement in Ref2 that this Drury "died between 1799 when he witnessed a deed and 1802 ..." Almost certainly, Drury did not die by 1802. It's possible the administrator of the Jeffreys estate preferred that the family think the debt was not collected because Drury had died rather than knowing that he moved away. Len Thomas examined the original reference to Drury's debt in Franklin Co., NC (Will Book B, p. 90) and quoted it as saying that Drury "had moved away or was deceased." Other references and strong family traditions indicate that indeed Drury had moved away - to nearby Cumberland Co., NC. Rather certainly, the Drury in question was the one who bought land in Cumberland Co., NC 1803. His Cumberland Co. Will is dated 27 Feb 1820, but was not probated until Dec, 1843 after his wife died. Son, Needham Massee, was also named in the will. Regards to all, Theron Smith

It's unusual that he would reurn to SC after moving to GA. Even more unusual that he go to Greenville Co., SC. <<one researcher has his father as Drewery>> In the 1810 Chesterfield Co., SC, Drewry(5) b. abt. 1765 [from Arthur(4), John(3), Joseph(2), Richard(1)] is shown with son age 16-26 [1784-1794.] This agrees with what I show your Elias's age to be in 1850 GA. So Judge Massey decided, in MASSEY GENEALOGY ADDENDUM, p. 401, BY HYPOTHESIS, that Elias of GA was son of this Drewry. Not proved, but sounds resonable; Drewry did have a brother named Elias. On 27 Sep 2002, Elaine B. asked about a Frances Massey [b. 1810, SC; possibly dau. of a Drury Massey], who m. James Eubanks about 1824 and went to GA. I can't shed any light on that case. Theron.

    1. [MASSEY-L] DRURY MASSEYs of the Surry and Prince George Co., VA Branch of US MASSEYs
    2. tl2smith
    3. For several months I have wanted to organize all the known early Drury Masseys (also spelled Drewry) in my branch of the Masseys into one chart showing how they are related to each other. With one or two exceptions, I think I have finally succeeded. Principal sources were: Ref1: Judge Frank A. MASSEY, MASSEY GENERALOGY ADDENDUM (1979) Ref2: William W. Massey, MASSEY GENEALOGY 2000 (2000) The generation numbers and the outline of the Massey branch of current interest shown in the more recent Ref2 have been used in the following outline. Since many Massey list subscribers are familiar with Ref1, I have made mention of all the Drury/Drewrys occurring in that publication. Several of the Drurys in Ref1 appear to be incorrectly placed there, and, I have shown them in the outline below where more recent research indicates they should be placed. To effectively interpret what I have presented here, one must be aware of the generation numbers attached to each Massey person. There's no other practical way to keep from mixing up the many Masseys of the same given name. Note, as an example, "4.john Massey" and "John(4) Massey" both refer to a 4th generation John Massey. 1. John Massey (abt. 1705/6 - 1777 NC) 4. John Massey (abt. 1750-1788 Lincoln Co., NC) m. Winnie Daniels? (She 2m. Stephen Senter.) This John (4) appears in Ref1, 304, but is incorrectly placed as son of Richard(3) rather than John (3) 5. Drury Massey (abt. 1771-1836 Cape Girardeau Co., MO); m. Jenny MASTERS. This Drury was co-executor of his father's 1788 will; the other Co-executor was close cousin John(4) Massey [from Hezekiah(3); Hezekiah(2)] This Drury appears in Ref2, 74, but does not appear in Ref(1.) Ref1 incorrectly shows Drury(4) b. 1750 [from Wm(3); Hezekiah(2); see later] as son of John(4.) 6. Dr. Drury Massey Jr (1797 Lincoln Co., NC - 1865 Bollinger Co., MO) m. Susannah ----. Drury(6) appears in Ref1, 296, but was incorrectly placed as son of a Green(5) Massey [from William(4);John(3);Hez(2)] Drury(6) is ancestor of list subscriber Hugh Massey. 5. William Massey (apparently of Lincoln Co., TN and Spartanburg Co., SC) 6. Drury Massey(abt. 1785 - ?) Probably the Drury who moved to Washington Co., AL [Ref1,309] 5. John Massey Jr. Ref1, 305,307 shows s son for John(4) but the one shown is cousin John(4) Massey [from Hezekiah(3); Hezekiah(2)] In 2002, W.W. Massey provided a reference that supports John(4) having a son John Jr(5.) The current compiler has concluded that this John(5) can probably be identified as John of Giles Co., TN - John (5) Massey (1786/7 - 1859 MO) who m. Mary Henry (probably from one of the many Henry families in Lincoln Co.,NC). This John is ancestor of list subscriber Bill Massey of Franklin, TN. 6. Drury Massey (1814/5 NC - ?) 1m. unknown; 2m. Eleanor HAYNES. 4. William(4) Massey 5. Green Massey - the one shown incorrectly by Ref1 as father of Dr. Drury (6) Massey above is said by Ref1, 297 BY HYPOTHESIS to maybe have the following: 6. Drury Massey(abt. 1829, MO - aft. 1850, Alexander Co., IL) 3. Richard Massey [not known to have any Drury descendants, but Ref1 incorrectly placed at least one Drury descending from Richard (3)] 3. William Massey 4. Drury Massey of Johnston and Cumberland Co., NC (b. abt. 1850 - 1820 Cumberland Co., NC) Ref1 has two accounts of this Drury, incorrectly placed in both accounts: (1) Ref1, 295, placed this Drury as son of Wm(4); John(3); Hez(2) (2) Ref1, 304, placed this Drury as son of John(4) of Lincoln Co., NC; [from John(3); Hez(2) as above] with 2d wife, Barbara Needham [sic! should be Barbara BRYAN] This John(4), as seen above, did have a son Drury(5), but it was the Drury b. 1766/7 who m. Jennie Masters. Descendants of Drury Massey of Johnston and Cumberland Co., NC were puzzled about his placement in Ref1 as as son of John of Lincoln Co., NC Ref2, 76, placed this Drury(4) as son of William(3), etc. Correspondent Len Thomas concluded that there should be two Williams between Drury of Johnston and Cumberland Co., NC and Hezekiah(2), making this one Drury(5.) 5. Needham Massee(1779-1859 Macon Co., GA) 6. Dr. Drewery Washington Massee (1819-1903 Mason Co., GA) [Ref1, 295 and 304] Note spelling change. 5. Drury Massey Jr (1786-) [Ref1, 295 and 304] 2. Joseph Massey 3. John Massey 4. Arthur Massey(abt. 1836 - 1801 Kershaw Co., SC.) Ref2 was the first account to place Arthur as part of the Surry and Prince George Co., VA Branch of US MASSEYs. Ref1 had placed him in a different branch of Masseys. 5. Alston Massey (1762 VA - 1854 Monroe Co., AL) 6. Elias Massey (1793-1850) of SC and Leake Co., MS 7. Drewry Washington Massey (1815 SC 1891 Monroe Co., AL [Ref1, 397] 8. Drewry Alexander Massey (1854-1928, Monroe Co., AL) [Ref1, 397] 5. Drewry Massey (1765 VA - aft 1821 SC) [Ref1,401] 6. ---- Massey 7. Drury E. Massey (1836 AL) [Ref1,401] 2. Richard Massey who m. Anne Pettipool. This thirs son of Richard(1) is the ancestor of the current compiler. No records of Drurys in this sub-branch/ A follow up post will concentrate on Drury (4) Massey b. 1750 his wives, children, military service, residences, census reports, and differing accounts of his date of death.

    1. [MASSEY-L] RE: Children of Mansfield Massey
    2. Betty Massey
    3. I hope that someone out there can help me find more information on the children of Mansfield Massey, this is what I know of the family so far. In the 1820 Wilson County, TN census it shows, Daniel Massey 1 male 10/16, 1 male 16/18,1 male 16/26, 1 male 45/over, 1 female 10/16, 1 female 45/over. Daniel Massey married Elizabeth Baldwin on November 12, 1795 , they had 3 sons and 1 daughter. Garrett Massey b. 1796 Mansfield Massey b. 1804 James Massey b. 1805 Jane Massey b. 1806 Mansfield Massey was in Crawford County, Illinois durning the 1830 census it shows, Mansfield Masey 1 male 20/30, 1 female 0/5, 1 female 20/30. I haven't been able to find Mansfield first marriage record yet, so I'm not sure whom he married. Some people have that he married a Glenda Bright, but I don't. I think that maybe he married into the Henry family, James Enoch Henry married Jane Massey. Mansfield Massey and ? children are; Mary Massey b.1830 Robert Massey b. 1836 Boy Massey b.1838 James Massey b. 1839 Eliza H. Massey b.1846 William Massey b. 1848 1836 Mansfield Massey had land in the 1st district, and his brother James had land in the 2nd district. 1840 Benton County, TN census shows; Mansfield Massey 3 males under 5, 1 male 30/40, 1 female 10/15, 1 female 20/30 James Massey 1 male 15/20, 1 male 30/40, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5/10, 1 female 15/20 Garrett Massey 1 male 10/15, 1 male 15/20, 1 male 40/50, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5/10, 1 female 10/15, 1 female 15/20, 1 female 30/40 Daniel Massey 1 male 70/80, 1 female 70/80 Jane Henry 1 male 10/15, 2 males 15/20, 1 female under 5, 1 female 10/15, 1 female 30/40 James Henry 1 male under 5, 1 male 20/30, 1 female 15/20 In the 1850 Benton County, TN census shows; 19-19 Mansfield Massey 46 M NC Ellender 23 F TN (WIFE) Mary 19 F IL Robert 14 M TN James 11 M TN Eliza 4 F TN William 2 M TN Benjamin Bright 27 M UNK Artamissa 1 F TN Ellender Bright and Mansfield Massey were married May 23, 1850, and Benjamin Bright and Mary Massey, Mansfield's daughter, were married March 14, 1850. They weren't found in the 1860 census for Benton County, Tennessee. It's a mystery to me, I was hoping to find out more information on Mansfield's children and their spouses and children. But I know they had to be they're somewhere because they own land there... In 1863 Mansfield Massey's son Robert sold some land to J.T. Florence & Banabus Beasley. And in Dec.24, 1866 Mansfield filed an Intention for the Benefit of the Homestead in a Branch of Eagle Creek, Thomas Cain was with him at the time of filing. Also in Dec.27, 1866 Mansfield sold some land to his nephew William Henry. In the 1870 Benton County, TN census which was taken on July 21 1870, Mansfield Massey's wife Ellen and their children were in the 1st district, 58-58 Massey, Ellen 43 f w keeping house 600 356 Columbus 18 m w working farm Sarah 17 f w at home Samuel 16 m w (Clark) Pinkney 13 m w Jinner 10 m w (Junior also known as Brown) Mansfield 7 m w I also found Columbus and Sarah Massey in the 1870 Humphreys County, TN census which was taken on August 10, 1870, so that makes me think that maybe Sarah and Columbus are married, and therefore she is not Mansfield Massey's daughter. I know what happened to Mansfield Massey Jr., Clark Pinkney, and Eliza Massey. Mansfield , Pinkney, and Brown moved to Clay County, AR in 1880, Brown dissappeared after that, and Eliza Massey moved to Dunklin County, MO, she never married. I'm not sure but I think Mansfield Massey, SR. died somewhere between 1867 & 1870. I hope that someone out there can help me find more information on his children. Thanks ahead of time! 1. [MASSEY-L] MASSEYs in Derbyshire and Staffordshire
    2. Hello everyone, I have just joined this mailing list as I am tracing my MASSEY ancestors, and have been doing for about six years now. The MASSEYs have lived in the village of Newhall in South Derbyshire, for around the last 165 years. My earliest ancestors found are William MASSEY and Mary THOMAS, they married on 28th December 1835 at St Peter's Church, Stapenhill, Derbyshire and lived in the village of Newhall for the rest of their lives. Their children's names were (in order), Thomas, Robert, William, Joseph, (my gg-grandfather), Benjamin, Fanny and Mary. The first three children died young. I cannot get past William, on the censuses for Newhall his ages differ by upto 15 years and his place of birth was Colton/Coulton in Staffordshire or Leicestershire. Looking at the parish registers for Colton in Staffordshire (near Rugeley), there are two William MASSEYs christened, 1805, parents Thomas and Hannah (nee Sellitoe) and 1812, parents Thomas and Margaret (nee MASSEY). William was 61 (according to the burial entry) in 1875 making him born in 1814, however on the 1871 census he was 63, making him born 1808. This is where my problem lies. I have a website for my ancestors at (http://www.masseyfamilytree.freeservers.com) if anyone would like to find out more. I can be emailed at ([email protected]) Emma Massey

    3. Would the person who sent this to me , contact me you do not have a vaild email address I can not reply to you so please contact me. This is what you sent today. Donna, I came across your posting on Genforum about a Berry Massey. This is probably a long shot, but I do believe that there is a connection somewhere. Do you know of a connection to the Deason family somewhere in your family? My grandfather's name was Berry Elias Brister. His parents were George Washington and Martha Alabama (Deason) Brister. Martha's parents were John J. and Mary Jane (Norwood) Deason. John was b. ca. 1828 in Monroe Co. Ala. I believe that John J. Deason's mother was either a Massey or her mother was a Massey that married a White. John J.'s mother (Mary?) was probably b. 1796. She was in Monroe Co. Ala on the 1850 Census with her children, but her husband, believed to be Levi Deason was not there. I believe that Levi Deason's parents were Edmond R. Deason Jr. and Hestor Cato. If any of this sounds familiar please let me know. Thanks, Kay Adams, Tx.

You've probably seen the speculative charts on the internet that show one John Massey b. 1570, Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire, England, as father of two Massey men: John b. 1616 as ancestor of our Charles City Co., VA Masseys; Nicholas b. 1618 as ancestor of Nicholas Massey of MD. I know the connection down to our USA Masseys is spurious and I suspect the one down to your Nicholas is also. Theron Smith.

Can you clarify this for me ? << I've been looking for the father and mother of William III b. 1785 d. 1824 married to Sarah Freeman in Franklin Co., NC in 1808. This Wm. III is my ggggrand father.>> First of all, William(3) Massey DID marry Judith -----, but there's no evidence whatsoever that she was a PETTIPOOL. Since William and Judith had a son, Pettipool Massey, an earlier researcher speculated that William's wife may have been a PETTIPOOL. We now know that the parents of William(3) were Richard(2) Massey and Anne PETTIPOOL (daughter of William Pettipool Sr and Elizabeth ----.) Pettipool Massey was named for his William's MOTHER - not for William's wife's maiden name. William(4), who 2m. Delphia Broadway, appears to be son of William(3) and Judith but rigorous proof is lacking. This William(4) appears to be the one (a) who had land near Pettipool Massey and (b) who is in the 1790 Wake Co., NC census near the many other Masseys of the Moccasin Creek area (the boundary between Wake and Franklin COs., NC.) This William(4) had sons William iii (5) and John(5) and several daughters. The William who m. Sarah Freeman does not appear to be this William iii, although there have been attempts to make that placement. Actually, Sarah's William appears to have lived in northern Franklin Co. near Warren Co. More than one researcher have "busted their pick" trying to place this William. Theron Smith.

    1. [MASSEY-L] DNA testing
    2. Margaret Shearing
    3. Hi As I understand it, by testing DNA you can trace the male line back a long long long way as there is 1 part of the DNA that remains the same with all males in the same surname line. The female line of course is more complex. However they can be traced back to descending from 6 women millions of years ago. I read an article earlier this year and dont fully understand it and stand to be corrected if I have got something wrong! [email protected] may be of interest to some of you. I would like to know how to get started for the testing. I live in England. Any advice out there? Regards Margaret
