    3. I think most of us on the Massey List probably have a Joseph or two in our family tree. I have a Joseph Massey, unknown date of birth/death, married to Elizabeth Washington Lanier. (Elizabeth is said to have been a first cousin to George Washington). Joseph was my G-G-G-G-G-G-G Grandfather. Joseph and Elizabeth had the following children: 1. Thomas Massey - Born 1740 - Brunswick Co., VA Married: Mary Peebles 2. * WILLIAM MASSEY - Born 1743 - Brunswick Co., VA Died 21 Mar 1841 - Lancaster Co., SC Married: 1763-1764, ELIZABETH RIVES MASSEY widow of James Massey 1744 (brother of William) * WILLIAM AND ELIZABETH MASSEY were my 6-G Grandparents. 3. James Massey - Born 1744 - Brunswick Co., VA Married: Elizabeth Rives 4. John Massey - Born 1745 - Brunswick Co., VA Married: Joan Cook 5. Joseph Massey - Born 1750 - Brunswick Co., VA Married: Martha Hood 6. Sarah Massey - Born ?? Married: William Advent 7. Amy Massey - Born ?? Married: Peter Advent 8. Rebecca Massey - Born ?? Married: James Wise 9. Agnes Massey - Born ?? Married: ??? Richardson 10. Mary Massey - Born ?? Married: Thomas Wise 11. Winifred Massey - Born ?? Married: ??? Sykes 12. Betty Massey - Born ?? Married: John Doby 13. Lucy Massey - Born ?? Married: ??? Sykes 14. Frances Massey - Born ?? Married: John Doby I have further information on the family. I did not obtain this information myself, so it is not documented. However, it was sent to me by a relative who is relatively sure of the information. Let me know if you want me to send you the other information I have. Thelmarie "Thel" Alexander Curtis [email protected]

    3. I seem to have waked up the LIST. I am looking for informtion about Joseph Massey b Brunswick Co VA somewhere around 1690. He m Elizabeth Lanier or Elizabeth Lee or maybe both. Or maybe it was another Joseph that m one of them. Everyone seems to have different dates for birthdays, marriages, etc. Is anyone on this LIST researching this Joseph Massey. If not, I'll just let you go back to sleep. Thanks Sarah

    3. On 12 June 2003, Eleanor received the following message: >>I am researching my Massey roots from Tishomingo County, Miss. I pulled up your family tree and I notice that you list John M. Massey, b. 1817 as being the children of William, b. 1802 and mother Martha Heath, b. 1807. William would only have been 15 at the time of John's birth and Martha would have been 8. I believe John M., married to Lucinda, is the son of Hezekiah Massey, b. 1790 in VA and was in Tishomingo Co. in 1860 along with John. Just thought I'd pass that on. Also, book called "Chotankers", written by Avon Edward Foote quotes records from Tishomingo listing John M. as a son of Hezekiah.<< I think an answer to this will also be of interest to other reqders. See also Judge Frank Masesy's ADDENDUM, 329. I feel comfortable in placing John Milton Massey (b. 1816/17; 1m. Lucindo ----; 2m. Mary "Polly" Hanks) as son of Hezekiah (5) Massey and ---- Vanlandingham. This Hezekiah (5) n. 1789/90, presumably in VA, lived during his prime years (1820-1850) in Lancaster Co., SC; he d. 1 Mar 1861 in Tishimingo Co., MS. Hezekiah (5) is most likely from James(4); James(3); Joseph (2); Richard (1) Massey. I was surprised several years ago when I first saw an occurrence of a Hezekiah [Hezekiah(5)] as a descendant of Joseph(2). But Massey Genealogy 2000 gives a convincing account that Joseph(2) actually had a SON Hezekiah(3), identifiable as the "extra" Hezekiah (3) in the 1748 Brunswick Co., VA voting list. One Hezekiah (3) in that list is easily identifiable as son of Richard(2) and Anne Pettipool Massey (and hence my 5-great grandfather.) The "extra" Hezekiah (3) was first thought to be son of Hezekiah(2), but this Hezekiah (3) had already relocated in Granville Co., NC by 1748. The liberal appearance of the name "Hezekiah" in all three branches [Hezekiah(2), Joseph(2), and Richard(2)] of our Charles City Co., VA line of Masseys inspired the statement in Massey Genealogy 2000 that the father-in-law of apparent emigrant Richard (1) was probably named Hezekiah ----. Regards to all, Theron Smith.

    2. Searching for my great grandmother's, Angeline Lafayette's, biological parents and siblings. She possibly had Boles/Bowles and Massey connections. Angeline Lafayette b. 14 Jul 1847 d. 06 Jun 1939, 2 year old "pauper" in household of Jepee/Jessie Gieger on 1850 census of Covington Co., MS. Angeline was raised by the Gieger family as a foster child. According to Gieger family descendants, Angeline's parents were believed to have been French inn keepers who died during an epidemic. Angeline had several brothers who were taken in by different families. On the 1850 census of Smith Co., MS, adjacent to Covington Co., there appears to be a family of Lafayette boys being overseen by 26 year old Isaac Boles Lafayette, with the help of William Massey: 1850- Smith co., MS- p.311,  Head of household, William Massey, 58 year old male, farmer, born SC.  Living in same household, Isaac Boles Lafayette, 26 year old male, overseer, born AL; William M.D. Lafayette, 18 year old male, student, born MS;  Arthur M. Lafayette, 16 year old male, student born MS; Powhatten E. Lafayette, 11 year old male, born MS;  Benjamin F. Lafayette, 9 year old male, born MS;  Henry Lafayette, 5 year old male, born MS. One Isaac Boles is found on an early Carolina census but I have not been able to connect him to Isaac Boles Lafayette.

    3. I have found the above on RG13/5289 F101 p82, correctly indexed from the enumerator's sheet, but am reluctant to accept it at face value, because in at least two sheets, it is the only entry without a full first name. I am hoping it is my long lost great uncle William Arthur Massey, as the entry is correct in all other respects. The initial definitely looks like the writewr's "M" although a scribbled "W" can look similar, there is no "W" for comparison. Thehouseholder's name looks like Halstrap, age 52, born York. Is it likely that the enumeratorcould not read his notes when he got back home/to the office? Does anyone claim M Massey? (W.A. Massey was in Chester for 1881/1891). There was no M. Massey birth registered in Wrexham around the correct date, although William himself was registered as Arthur Donald Massey

Since others asked about this same issue, I'll post my answer herein. There's many references to this subject in the MASSEY-L archives. The best current reference to Hezekiah(3) and his ancestors back to William the Conquorer and Hamon de Massy is William W. Massey's MASSEY GENEALOGY 2000 which is in several libraries and can probably still be ordered from the author ([email protected]) who contributes regularly to MASSEY-L. Charles (4) is mentioned in this book as a possible son of Hezekiah(3). Judge Frank Massey's earlier (1979), MASSEY GENEALOGY ADDENDUM, 314-318, shows him as definitely a son, but without adequate proof. He was a purchaser at the estate sale of Hezekiah(3). 2. Kenneth Gregory Baldwin
    3. G'day Cobbers, Have made a little progress with my MASSEY research. I believe that William MASSEY's father is a William MASSEY, his father being John MASSEY from Saintfield, County Down, NIR. William (Snr) father was John MASSEY of Saintfield in County Down, a farmer who died 19 Feb 1858 at Saintfield aforesaid was proved at Belfast by oath of William MASSEY of Ballymacarrett in the said county, coal factor, sole executor. The Will of William MASSEY (Snr) of Durham Street, Belfast, makes mention of sons William (Jnr) and Joseph, and a daughter, Elizabeth and his wife Sarah. >From "Old Belfast Families and the New Burying Ground", a headstone for William MASSEY reads: Erected by William Massey of Saltwater Bridge to the memory of his wife Elizabeth Massey who departed this life (on the 5th day of January 1825 aged 38 years. Also four of his children who died young. Also the above Named William Massey) who departed this life on the 2nd day of May aged 65 years, also Samuel son of the above died 29th June 1866 aged 38 years. Also Sarah second wife of the above William Massey died 8th January 1896 aged 89 years. I believed that William MASSEY (Snr) married Sarah CLATWORTHY (parents: Samuel & Jean CLOTWORTHY of Hanover Quay) on the 26 Jun 1825: Rosemary Street Church, Belfast, Antrim, Ireland by Rev. Samuel Hanna (a famous Presbyterian minister who was known as "Roaring Hanna" because of his very loud voice and "rip roaring" sermons). I wonder if William's earlier marriage was to Elizabeth TOWNSLEY? Would SKS be able to do a lookup of William MASSEY in Belfast in the 1851 Census for me? Anybody out there with a connection to my MASSEY mob ? Regards Greg Baldwin AIGS 9842 A&NESFHS 9933 KFHS 7737 Researching Surnames: ALLEN - Cornwall, Eng.
